Levantine and You

So, saw the activity thread. Smart move there.

Three things that stuck out to me:

In-Character Leadership
Faction Threads/Activity
Clear IC Mission

That last bit will build the rest of it. I know I'm new to the faction, and did that advert to try to drum up some activity.

But now that we have Valiens on the case, it seems to pull up more activity to the discussion of the faction.

What does everyone see the LS as? I see space hippies tossed around, I see space cowboy tossed around.

What is it for everyone?

That's the problem at least for me. I'm not sure. I've heard both tossed around plenty as well.

It seems to be a little corner of space more set on investigation/exploring over the usual war drums. Which it's nice to have that peaceful faction, but war eventually is going to muck that up. So that can't last forever, though we've gotten away with it for a long, long time.

That said, I've never figured out exactly how the government works. I realize for the most part it's live and let live, as long as said planet isn't doing something terrible. But it still leads to confusion when trying to explain it to anyone who might be interested.

Yeah, the government here is a bit tricky. I see it as a collective government, sort of what we set up over in the Techno Union recently.

But like... if we do Space Cowboys, I've got some ideas to set up things. I guess how people SEE the Faction through their characters' eyes is what I'm hoping for, to inspire.

For Judah and a few others (Siobhan, Danger) this place is a little corporate playground for us. Ive had Salacia expand aggressively through the territory while enjoying little to no conflict. ICly speaking labor is cheap and trade routes be in place. OOCly speaking, its been nice to expand with little restrictions and drama.

We need an IC leadership, a council of sorts without a single leader but a coalition of interests.

What we also want is goals and an IC enemy to oppose us.

I proposed on Skype a way of helping Primeval (or another faction) with their dominions and they help us with ours. Give us some opposition later.

We should also relabel a little. Space hippies or even space wild west are somewhat lacking as a simple description. This faction really should be what it says on the tin a 'sanctum' for all to flee to. We need to vigorously defend our people and intentions.

Exactly. I picture a lot of Firefly /Serenity like backwater colonies when I think of the area.
^ This for me as well. Wild West IN SPAAAAAAAAAAACE!

Which, ironically somewhat, was the original pitch for Star Trek in the 1960's. Wagon Train to the stars. Star Wars, particularly what we now call (after the fact) 'A New Hope' is a Japanese samurai film with lasers by contrast.

I see the LS as frontier, outdoors-y. It's the Outer Rim, Unknown Territories, and Wild Space. It's hard to think of those concepts without also calling to mind the browncoats or Billy the Kid.

While I love Firefly/Serenity... What I worry about is that being too niche to make up an entire faction and be attractive enough to entice new members in. Might need to broaden things just a hair outside that niche, to make sure we stay viable.

I think what we need is a kind of working between each planet and be on like ...oh you got that we need that and we got this coming out our ears.

Lets trade, but with understanding that not going t work with all planets as once again we run into planets in different development stages.

I don't know having like a way to set up a kind of each planet to have a ambassador having a way to keep in touch with each one but it be more of a round table coming together maybe.

The Admiralty
I honestly think it's hard to qualify what the Levantines are as group, because I have the feeling that every member here has a different view and opinion on 'their Levantine Sanctum'. Mostly because the worlds are so varied, mostly because the writers here don't have one single unifying belief besides:

"I want freedom, I want to get away from the useless drone of faction x or y."

Now, with that out of the way. I have always seen the Levantines as a frontier, Space Wild West where everyone can make a name out for themselves as long as they try and work their hardest for it. We don't discriminate on basis of Sith, Jedi or Neutral Masters, the only thing we asked... was that they left all that garbage where they came from if they wished to join us.

We don't play politics, we let people do what they wanted to do.

Honestly, I just woke up. So I can't really give any good alternatives, but I would like to ask people to keep this in mind when they discuss possible alternatives or revamps of the faction. It's all good and well to try and save a faction, I get it, you don't want your hard work to be lost, you have come to love the faction and want it to stay.

But I don't think we should be changing the main core of the faction just to make it stay, because then it ain't the Levantines anymore, then it ain't the faction anymore that we have come to love and are trying to save right now.
