Description: The Atlas is a heavy dropship designed to rapidly transport large numbers of troops and/or heavy vehicles from capital ships into combat zones. Most of the time, it is used to supplement smaller dropships like the D-25 by bringing in multiple large vehicles, up to the equivalent of four large walkers or battle tanks, but it can also be configured to be a pure passenger transport. It's large cargo hold combined with the ship's hyperdrive also sees the craft frequently pressed into the role of a intra-fleet transport, ferrying goods and people around. But in either of these roles, it is almost always escorted by starfighters, as its large size, slow speed, and valuable cargo often make it a prime target. In many cases, two of the ships are deployed together, allowing their turreted weapons to provide better coverage against multiple attackers. Because of the attention that this craft is expected to draw, it sports a top-mounted light flak cannon, a turreted laser cannon on either side of the cockpit, and a pair of concussion missile launchers. On a more passive side, the ship is remarkably well built with a ferrocarbon frame and several layers of alusteel plating. It also sports not only regular deflector shields, but also a back-up shield as a measure of last resort. Like several other recent designs, Lucerne Labs has licensed the production of the craft to other companies in order to quickly replenish Republic losses.
