Locke and Key Mechanics is the technology company started and managed by John Locke. One of the largest and best known interstellar conglomerates in the galaxy today, Locke and Key Mechanics is able to compete for the highest of government contracts, competing with companies that have existed for far longer. • Headquarters: Fenris

  • Domain: Locke and Key is a significant player on the world of Fenris, their status as a large corporation making them the equivalent to a country in their own right on the planet. They also have control of one of the moons of Vylmira. On Fenris, Locke and Key is very integrated with their workers lives, providing housing, transport, recreational facilities and other amenities for their employees, in a world where this is expected they try to go a step further. The moon of Vylmira couldn’t be more different, the company has effectively declared a no-fly zone, barring all but the most trusted researchers from the facility that is largely run by the AI EX.

  • Hierarchy:

    The Board

Like any large company, Locke and Key Mechanics has a very strict corporate structure. Standing at the top, above the company is the board consisting of the largest shareholders, like any major interstellar conglomerate Locke and Key Mechanics is ultimately answerable to those who have invested money in the company. The shareholders come in all shapes and sizes, from bankers to lawyers representing trusts and other financial institutions to wealthy individuals who have chosen to invest by themselves. John remains the single largest investor with 35% of the shares in his name. Through control of various trusts and other legal institutions, John has regained control of an additional 23% of the shareholding he initially had to sell over time, allowing him to be assured of complete control over his company into the future.

  • CEO - Chief Executive Officer - John Locke
The chief executive officer (CEO),[1] or just chief executive (CE), is the most senior corporate, executive, or administrative officer in charge of managing an organization – especially an independent legal entity such as a company or nonprofit institution. (Quoted from wiki)
In his role as chairman of the board and CEO John has far-reaching powers and responsibilities to manage the company’s actions and direction. He is the face of the company, it was on his exploits and engineering expertise that it was formed and to many it still operates.

  • Vice Presidents
In non-financial businesses, vice presidents often report directly to the president or CEO of the company and is a member of the executive management team. Some corporations that use this term may have individuals with the title of vice president responsible for specific business divisions (e.g., Vice President for Legal, Vice President for Sales and Marketing, Vice President for Finance, or Vice President for Human Resources). (Quoted from wiki)
Directly underneath John on the corporate ladder lie the vice presidents, responsible for specific departments within the company. From finance to human resources, sales to research, every aspect of the company has it’s vice president to guide it. Often vice presidents are long term employees who have risen through the ranks to the highest position they can achieve within Locke and Key Mechanics. Competition for the roles can be fierce and even when secured, each vice president is painfully jealous of their fiefdom.

  • Planetary/Station Supervisors
Locke and Key Mechanics has a presence on many planets flung across the galaxy, on many stations orbiting suns and gas giants. In much the same way that a country might appoint an ambassador to oversee its presence within the borders, Locke and Key pick supervisors to oversee their operations on a planet. Obviously, some planets are seen as choice assignments while others are seen as dead-ends, but within their territory, the supervisors wield significant power.

  • Department Heads
In a similar manner to the CEO and the vice presidents, each planet or station has department heads who are responsible for a specific area of operations, from finances to human resources. The Department heads answer to the planetary/station supervisor for the output of their department, as well as being held accountable to the vice presidents at headquarters for their performance, not an enviable position to find oneself in. However, managing these conflicting demands is key to advancing up the run to claim a supervisor’s slot.

  • Division Managers
Depending on the location and the responsibilities of the planet/station the various department heads would have Division Managers working for them managing the various projects or functions under their purview. A division manager might be the head of a project, or be responsible for a particular section of a Department’s duties such as organising the payroll.

  • Supervisors
The supervisors are responsible for very specific groups or areas underneath the Division Managers. They might be responsible for a specific labratory, or office, or simply a smaller group of people. The supervisor position is often an employees first management role, and is a good taste of how they might appear when they travel further up the ladder.

  • Executive Assistants/Attaches - Luna V Gianna Aegis EX
The gateways to the executives, their eyes, ears and hands to the rest of the company. It is impossible for any one executive to be everywhere, to be aware of everything happening under their purview, or even fully prepare for a meeting with everything else they need to focus on. That’s where the Executive Assistants and Attaches come in, some of the most trusted members of Locke and Key Mechanics, they have some of the highest security clearances to best assist the executive they are assigned to. In addition, John knows how important they are to the smooth running of the company they are, and has built a remuneration package that recognises this. The salary and benefits enjoyed can rarely be matched anywhere else in the galaxy.

  • Special Researchers
Some projects, some research are not meant for the regular chain of command within the company. Some people need that special touch, or for their research to not see the light of day unless needed. For those people the position of Special Researcher exists, answering directly to John in his role as Chairman of the Board and CEO.

  • Membership:
Despite the high level of automation involved in running the company and its assets, across the galaxy Locke and Key Mechanics employees number in the 10s of millions scattered across the various branches. These include packaging and delivery all the way to research, production and administration.
Joining Locke and Key Mechanics can be as simple as filling out an employment form, if you want to start at a basic level job. The company is very much a meritocracy, and those who show capability and skill and rewarded and shepherded up the ranks of the company. Locke and Key is more than willing to provide educational opportunities to their staff, in return for a guaranteed employment for a fixed number of years. Other members of the company have been head-hunted or hired for their skills. The more talented you are, the more experience, or trained skills you bring the higher up the organisation you can start, but your rise from there is based on personal merit. The Vice Presidents of the company are roughly split in half between those who have worked their way up, and those outside hires who came in in higher positions.
OOCly, anyone wishing to RP as part of Locke and Key Mechanics should contact me so we can discuss what kind of role they might play in the company, and how we can go about getting them there.

  • Climate:
Locke and Key Mechanics is first and foremost a galactic level business, and that is obvious in every facet of the company. While they are willing to go the extra-mile for their staff, they require reciprocation, asking their staff to put in that little more, go a little above and beyond. If a project needs to be completed, it needs to be completed, and the bonuses and overtime should be taken as a given. Outside of crunch times, they try to be as accommodating to their staff as they possibly can. Amenities like daycare, housing, local shopping and subsidized holidays are all provided to the Locke and Key staff, from the janitors to the most senior VP everyone is able to enjoy the benefits.

  • Reputation:
Locke and Key Mechanics is seen as one of the galaxy’s foremost tech and manufacturing companies. Their products are seen as riding the cutting edge of technology and have cultivated a name to be proud of. One that is recognised the galaxy over.

  • Curios: Every employee gets a security badge and a corporate NAVI.

  • Rules:

    Respect your fellow workers

  • Innovation is everything

  • Don’t steal, if someone tries to bribe or buy you, we’ll beat their offer.

[*]
Goals: To grow and expand into the largest tech and engineering company in the galaxy.

Since he was young John Locke had loved droids, building them, repairing them, seeing how he could improve them, it had been all he’d thought about while his friends were out playing sports and running around he was tinkering away. It was only natural then that he’d want to do it full time, make his career in the industry, and as a young boy he’d always dreamed of having a workshop. But university changed the boy’s dreams, he didn’t want to just repair machines, he wanted to design and build them.

Locke and Key Mechanics was the result of this changed dream, John sank every penny he earned designing droids for other companies and doing repairs into the company. That alone wasn’t enough but his parents saw what he was trying to do and decided to sell their house, pouring their life’s savings into their son’s dream. It wasn’t a lot, wasn’t enough to compete with the big companies, even on a planetary scale, but it paid for equipment, for a place to stay and a first line of production.

Locke mechanics started off subcontracting to other larger companies as they build up their infrastructure before they started producing parts for other droids, upgrades and modkits. John wasn’t happy with that, and seized the opportunity to gain licenses, producing droids for intergalactic companies for sale on Corellia. These deals were the icebreakers for the company, allowing Locke and Key to expand rapidly, opening up more and more manufacturing lines as they grew to become one of the largest production companies on the planet. Yet as the production grew John retained his love of tinkering, as he started to reach for the stars opening up branches on Commenor and Denon. The decision was made to branch out to attract more enquiries, more opportunity and the best way to do this...well it was a big galaxy filled with people who needed to fly, and liked to shoot. Uptil now the company has mainly focused on repairing or providing research and assistance to others as it settled itself. This is a lucrative field and has allowed them to create and invest in solid infrastructure but now they’re getting ready to start up their first inhouse designed production and introduce themselves to the galaxy at large.

Even with the company set on the brink of revealing themselves to the galaxy John still wants to create an environment where his employees were happy and satisfied, no matter which branch of the company they work for. He knows that happy workers are more productive and less likely to be tempted by offers from other companies, either for their employment, or for company secrets. There is a certain loyalty that he has built up, both by providing support to employees in the form of trips, nurseries and housing support as well as through his personal actions. When there was an incident with the production line in their flagship factory John was there with the rescue workers helping people out, even at the cost of his own body. Although the majority of the workers were rescued, John himself was laid up for months, finally accepting a significant set of cybernetics, compromising almost 40% of his body.

As the company moved past this incident they expanded further and further into the galaxy, developing more and more products as they gained more and more of a reputation, gaining more and more of a market share. Although initially John tried to stay out of politics, that proved to be impossible, the bigger a company, the better known it is the more pressure to take sides. Locke and Key Mechanics initially found themselves siding with the Silver Jedi as one of the main suppliers to the Order until John fell out with them over their unwillingness to take action leading him to transfer his allegiance to the Confederacy of Systems developing new bases on Naboo and Vylmira as Lockle and Key became one of the primary suppliers to the confederacy, growing ever bigger and richer with each contract. I find the lack of a 'I never asked for this' reference disturbing.
