- [SIZE=9pt]The main gun has a range and muzzle velocity many orders of magnitude higher than pretty much anything else around. An energy torpedo has a velocity of 0.2c, approximately 1,000x faster than a hypervelocity railgun’s projectile. A Hellbore, composed of energy torpedo projectors, can bring substantial pain to the tune of two concussion missile equivalents per second. It’s a fully automatic sniper rifle that can hit things at ten times the distance between a planet and its moon.[/SIZE]

- [SIZE=9pt]Also, the Hellbore's reactor feed is routed through a one-way plasma fuse, a very large component which would need to be manually replaced in the event of a significant feedback event, including (but not limited to) a serious, direct ion strike. [/SIZE]

[SIZE=9pt]The Iron Crown Hood-class Fire Support Cruiser saw extensive use against the Ssi-Ruuvi Imperium and the Sorcerers of Rhand, among others. The pacification of Serpena and other small engagements also featured the Hood’s long-range fire support. However, the Hood was constructed several shipbuilding generations ago. Though still a competitive vessel, it shows its age in numerous ways. [/SIZE]
[SIZE=9pt]Its replacement is the Longbow, a dedicated transport platform for a single Hellbore cannon. Modernized reactors and control systems allow the Longbow to use the Hellbore for sustained periods. Unlike the Hood, the Longbow has no LAC complement or defensive weapons. However, it retains other design elements, such as extremely crowded hallways.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=9pt]The Longbow’s mission profile is variable. While it can serve perfectly well as a rear-echelon artillery ship, some commanders deploy widely spaced Longbows around a planet at extreme range, and snipe incoming or outgoing traffic. The largest interdiction fields extend for hundreds of planetary radii, but the Longbow’s Hellbore cannon can harass or even cripple interdictors from much farther away. [/SIZE]
