Lore Based Questions

So there are some questions about Star Wars warfare I'd either like clarified or I can't find an answer for. More will be added as time goes on.

  1. Do bombers go through shields with their attacks?
  2. How effective are capital ship 'defence guns' against attack craft?
  3. If two ISDs were facing each other, no fighters, would the battle take a long time, or not as much?

I feel like Bombers are what takes down the shields in my opinion, and I'd say that defensive guns are probably pretty effective of taking care of attack craft (since boarding actions are fairly rare and such most likely due to this), and I think two fighter empty ISD's would take a long time, because when the fighters are out there the ISD's are still shooting at each other, so naturally without fighters the battle will probably take a while.

That's my unresearched opinion, and it mostly stems from my "experience" in Star Wars: Battlefront II.

Having just watched the original trilogy this last week and been getting back to my naval military bearing while on my lovely deployment I may have a few answers...[member="Valiens Nantaris"] [member="Fatty"]

  1. I would refer you to this link here; Now based on the movie I had to assume the Death Star was protected by a powerful particle field generator which helps reconcile why the rebel fighters and bomber had to pull back from their initial attempt to assault. I presume your question extends to the payload of the bombers as well? Again the link above will likely help determine the answer to that query. Back to what I believe the question pertained to the movement of a Void Craft through shields, The answer would be NO. UNLESS the speed of which that VC was at the equivalent of Idling the VC will likely explode against the shield. The shields are designed to protect against high speed kinetic energy, the speed of which most Void Craft maneuver at is likely in the higher end of G-Force and would be treated the same in terms of physics (sci fi physics that is).
  2. A Capital Ships defense guns, that is a very broad term that on this site I have seen only a few expand on what type of defense gun. A few military terms to clarify things in reconciliation with the term defense guns. The term Point Defense Capability is typically what is used in discussion of war ships. With in that Capability is of course the weaponry used which could be as sophisticated as a Close-in Weapon System or as basic as that of the manned type Anti-Void Craft weaponry as seen here. Extrapolating the CIWS drawbacks for a laser defense gun or any kinetic projectile based gun, the CIWS weapon and a Manned AVC weapon could only fire at one target at time. Thus the limitation of a such weaponry on a capital ship is essentially the Number and Placement (NP) of weapons on the vessel the Direction (D) from which the enemy is attacking will gauge the Effectiveness (E) of the Capital Ships ability to counter hostile Void Craft. CIWS as mentioned in the link, is not just a kinetic based gun, the weapons system may also be a missile based which would eliminated several of the drawbacks but also has its own limitations such as ammunition and the storage of ordnance, the time it takes to load missiles.
  3. A Straight punch for punch no holds barr Void Craft exempt battle between two Star Destroyer of the Imperial I Class would last less than an hour tops in my mind. The Galactic Empire's Imperial Navy followed a policy of Capital Ship firepower and superiority. Thus when pitted against each in my mind the battle would be very short and quite brutal. In the end it would be dependent upon the Commanding Officers of each vessel and their tactics. Salvo fire versus Continuous Fire; Concentrated targeting versus Spread Targeting. The armament of an ISD I was the epitome of naval strength in a Ship of the Line coming in at the following numbers: (6) Dual heavy turbolaser turrets; (2) Dual heavy ion cannon turrets ; (2) Quad heavy turbolasers; (3) Triple medium turbolasers ; (2) Medium turbolasers ; (60) Taim & Bak XX-9 heavy turbolasers; (60) Borstel NK-7 ion cannons; The ISD I is also accredited with a number of defense guns capable performing Anti-Void Craft although this number has never been clarified one would presume a vessel of 1600 meters long and 1000 meters (and some change) in width would be equipped with point defense capabilities. In short this brawl would not last long and again is determinable solely by the ability of the Captain and training of the crew of either vessel.

Given the battle of Endor and the fact we saw snub fighters damage star destroyers I think we can assume attack craft like bombers CAN harm large ships however given the disparity in quality of Imperial vs Rebel fighters I think it may be dependent upon the design specs of each craft that says weather it can harm a larger ship. I agree with [member="Caius Flavian"] on ISD vs ISD fights it'd come down to which ship commander used what tactics and had what positioning. it'd not last long and it'd be brutal as hell. Far as point defense weapons, well we saw already the first death star had issues using it's weapons to handle X wings so it may entirely depend on how their defenses were set up, If the ships using turbo laser batteries meant for capital ship fighting it's going to have a hell of a time trying to target one man fighters. However use of quad laser batteries designed to handle smaller ships could effectively target and engage them. So it's circumstances that will dictate things.

bombers can get through weakened shields, as they could target it more easily. After al they are deflector shields. Though no on planetary shields as they failed on swtor, and few other places in eu.

Capital ship defence guns v fighters, are poor hence the need for flak guns. This coupled with the fact both sides used fighters, to defend against others sides

I would say not long, one or other would take that hit that means run or die.
