Lost in the desert...

It was about 3:00AM in the academy, and the students had been woken from their deep slumber only to be thrust before a council. Seated were the likes of Darth Bourous the Will, Darth Andendu the Fist, and even the Emperor himself - all clad in black and golden masks, silently watching through a dozen empty eyes. Along side them were other sith, those of repute like Mordecai Zambrano Mordecai Zambrano , Judas of Vahl Judas of Vahl , Darth Empyrean Darth Empyrean , and Ashin Cardé Varanin Ashin Cardé Varanin . While the apprentices were still likely reeling from the early wakeup, they would only be confused and concerned further by their arrival before such powerful Sith Lords.

Maliphant was the only one who stood - resting his hands behind his back as he walked before him, hands drawn behind his back with a fist held in the other. Black eyes with red ember centers danced across those before him - carefully studying them with those dark side corrupted eyes. He made a noise only he could hear, as though thoughtfully judging them - though if it was approval or disappointment none could tell. His voice would offer nothing else as he began to speak -

"Acolytes. You have been collected here for the first of your trials - on my recommendation. Everyone here has been given the chance to prove themselves, and I expect none of you to bring shame to my name with it.", he said with a furrowed, almost angry brow.

"You will find a partner, the two of you will be transported to a section of the Desert nearly a hundred kilometers from here, and you will search the canyons, caves, and dunes for the remains of an ancient tomb lost to time. Within, you will find the Holocron of Darth Malgus - and you will bring it back to us. As your reward, you will keep the holocron; but be aware, short of killing your peers, there will be no rules as to your survival. You will survive until we come to get you, or you will return to the Academy with holocron in hand.", he said simply, motioning to a sudden hologram of a planet that formed. A small portion of it was lit up, showing them exactly where they would arrive.

Yet it would be obvious to those who had stayed in Korriban's academy, that the planet was dead. Besides the worms and beasts that roamed the ancient canyons, there was almost nothing to eat or survive on, dangerous storms that would threaten to tear their skin from bone through sheer force of sand, and nights that descended deep into the negative degrees. What they asked for was a trial of fortitude, of strategy, and of strength; but who among them would survive it?

"Any questions?", Maliphant said as he hands moved back behind his back.

Standing in front of Maliphant Dral's eyes glanced around at the acolytes around him. Listening to the words of the Darth in front of him he nodded, his mind flashing to the possibilities between the options that were lain before him. Thesh definitely was smart and knew his way around the force. Alina was strong both in physical prowess and in force power, after her change.

Making his way over to Alina Dral looked at the woman his hand on his hilt after Maliphant finished speaking.

"Would you like to go on this journey together? We will have a good chance compared to other pairings, and can fight through quite easily as a pair."

Dral asked the woman as he waited for her answer from the woman. A flashback of her beating a guy up at the supermarket flashed into his head with a chuckle.

The Shadowcat found the girl to be a host roughly when they had just been called into the council chamber. Unfortunately, this time it didn’t find any animal bodies for itself, there wasn’t really anything here that would have won its liking, but the place was such that it had to look around here. Dis was a curious Shadow. One of the first things that struck it was one of its companions. Though he was not currently in the form of Shadow, but because Dis knew him, immediately recognized its peer using the host, it was Kal Kal .

~ Hello Kal! I didn't expect to see you again here! ~ greeted its Shadow's peer telepathically and conveyed joyful feelings in his direction.

Then listened to the task; Dis was glad that they could not or did not have to hurt others. For the Shadowcat did not like violence, it was more of the peaceful, naive kind of Shadow; sometimes with a little perhaps childish thinking. Basically, though, it was well-meaning who wanted to help others. Dis did not expect to find itself in such a situation, but it was possible for Greystone to gain a great deal through the Sith sciences, or to make things through Sith magic and alchemy, so it was definitely worth doing business with them or learning from them.

~ I don’t know if I’m ready for this task or not. ~ sent a message again, and this time conveyed some doubt to Kal.

Although the Shadowcat liked Kal and loved his company, actually came here to get to know others or just learn from them. Dis can also chat with Kal at Netherworld, so it looked around to see who was here. Stranger than weird creatures, at least to it; finally its gaze stopped on a young man, Val Drutin was it. Stepped closer to him, and then, still a little timid and shy, addressed him cautiously.

"Hello! Don't you mind if I become your partner during the trial?" asked a little shyly and indecisively.

From the far end of the lineup, there came a soft snoring.

Val had nodded off not long after the acolytes were gathered outside. Never mind the brightness of the morning sun upon them, or the loudness of Maliphant's voice, or the fact that Val was standing up. His eyelids were lowered and his head was slumped forward, in direct contrast with his upright posture with shoulders thrown back and hands clasped behind his back.

He was jolted awake by someone speaking to him. Blinking, he raised his head, wiped a bit of drool from the corner of his mouth, then gazed at the creature before him.

"Kitty?" he said, a smile bursting across his face. "Yeah! I love cats!"

While he couldn't see the Shadowcat occupying the body, there was definitely something feline about the host Dis had chosen. She had soft orange fur, pointed ears, and fingers which ended in long, clawlike nails.

"Do you have a tail?" he asked bluntly. He loved cat tails. The way they swished so gracefully fascinated him. Without waiting for her to answer, Val leaned forward and past Dis, peering at her backside with the scientific scrutiny of a veterinarian or a zoologist.

Why was it more people saw fit to wake her in her sleep? The knocking on her door had an angry grumble from the young woman. She chose to ignore it, in favor of getting more sleep. Only to hear it again. Alina growled under her breath as she flopped out of bed. She didn't bother with getting dressed. Why would she? It was probably another acolyte trying to bother her. Darth Arkanus Darth Arkanus had done that once, and he certainly wasn't the first. "Who the hell do you think you a-" As soon as she opened the door and saw a pair of troopers sent to collect her she cut off. Then slammed the door shut.

There was a moment of panic as she gathered up her actual Sith robes, clearing her throat. "I.. Uh.. Just a moment!" Whatever this was, she wasn't going to rush off without her gear. Soon as she got it all on she went back to the door and nodded. "Alright. Lets uh. We can go."

She was plenty tired, given sleep still wasn't something she could come by. But when she actually arrived at the gathering and noticed just who was there, well. She woke right up. She immediately recognized the council. The Eyes were missing, but she imagined they were close. Watching as they always did. What was it that they needed the acolytes for?

Oh. A tomb hunt. Her brow furrowed. The last time she went into a tomb was with Iasha Rha Iasha Rha . And she nearly was eaten alive by a horde of undead. And was literally eaten by the earth. Not fond memories, but perhaps it was worth trying to go and conquer one successfully. Though, with a partner? Iasha was one of two she truly trusted to go into a tomb with, and neither she nor the other were here. But, perhaps. that was the challenge.

She waited for someone else to approach her, rather than approach others. Her eyes narrowed slightly on Dral as he approached. Made sense, in a way.
"I suppose that's true. Very well."

With a nod, he made his way to the transport they were set to depart out on. Dral hadn't spent much time out in the deserts of Korriban, as it tended to be a place masters would send their apprentices, and seeing that he has only recently gotten one, he hadn't been forced out into the winds yet.

"Do you know anything about what we are setting out into? I'd hope some more information, but Darth Maliphant as seen to it that the inexperienced go in blind."

Dral stood on the transport as it began to depart, shaking under his legs as he took a deep breath, throwing his senses out with the force, reaching out for any strong signs. he figured it would be fruitless, seeing that there were many different temples in the area, but it was always worth a try.

With weary eyes Quintus watched the arrayed Sith as he listened. He knew none of them, but he had no doubt of their strength if the sat with the Worm Emperor. He was just as sure they knew nothing of him, where the Worm Emperor may take the moniker Quintus knew in truth he truly was a worm besides the might here. Still as they started to pair off, he also knew where to turn to in this undertaking.

Stepping over to Arcturus Dinn Arcturus Dinn he spoke quietly as his eyes continued to move throughout the room as though he expected a viper to strike at any moment. "I'm surprised they didn't come running over here. I know I've not much to offer, but if you're willing I'd like to join you in this. You've got all the book smarts in your head, and while I may not have a clue I think you will."

It wasn't exactly true, he did have a few things to offer, but in comparison for the knowledge that might get them ahead it wasn't much. Besides Thesh was among the noted in the class, and student of Darth Empyrean Darth Empyrean . The Sith Lord seemed of even treatment, but an even the greatest Darth craved more power, and what brought more power and risk then a powerful apprentice. It wasn't an angle he believed true, but it wasn't one he was willing to completely discount either.

For a boy who had just made it out of a twisted world on the edge of the Galaxy, and almost immediately had been flung head first into the Netherworld, the notion of once more being put into a survival-of-the-fittest situation was rather horrifying. He still hadn't put back on the weight he'd lost, though he was decidedly stronger than those earlier days. And before he'd been trapped upon a temperate world, full of life. Dangerous, foul life... But life all the same.
This time?
But his Master had summoned him for this. He would not show weakness, he would not let Darth Maliphant down. He owed the man all he had, after all.
So he did not balk. He did not refuse, or remind the man that the doc's had set him on some pretty specific schedules. No, he did none of that. Instead he simply watched as Maliphant spoke, his gaze drifting briefly over the other gathered unseen faces then back to his Master. Then he nodded. Just one nod.
He did not move when the others did, he could see them from the corner of his eye figuring out their pairings and working through plans. He remained in place, instead, one hand fiddling with the hilt of his Sith Blade. Korriban... A world where only the most fearsome stalked, and whose prey hid beneath the sands. As though that might save them.
He was roused from his thoughts by the arrival of one Quintus Varro. The two had met on a few occasions at this point, during training sessions and the like. A quiet man, with potential... But had he been practicing, he wondered, did he invest in his own future or wait to be told what to do?
Truth be told it did not matter to Thesh.
"You wish to accompany me?" he inquired, raising a brow ever so slightly. The pair hardly knew one another, in truth. Why then would Quintus choose him? He supposed the man had given the reason himself, he felt he was assured some small measure of victory by doing so. Thesh's gaze drifted over the other students who were gathered, spotting their pairings, and hummed under his breath.
Alina and Dral no doubt made for a formidable pairing. Val and the cat could certainly get up to some mischief. Melydia was not one to underestimate, though he knew not who her companion was. Thesh had knowledge locked up in his head, to be sure, but he was far from assured any victory of his own. Even if he had survived for Force knew how long in the wilds already.
"Sure," he said, with a loose shrug, "Be a good time as any to see what you've picked up since our spar."
The man hadn't said anything he could bring to the party, but Thesh knew better than to underestimate his peers. Quintus had been brought here to participate for a reason, who knew perhaps he'd surprise everyone.

"If you're hoping there's a dummies guide to Korriban Tombs, you'll be sorely out of luck. No two tombs are the same. The only things that are similar are the fact there will be traps, trials, and guardians to overcome." Odd to think she might know more about these tombs than Darth Arkanus Darth Arkanus . Though, he did stop being a Sith for some time in favor of being a frail old man. Good to see he stopped with such a facade. She took a seat on the transport. She could recognize tombs, any Sith could, just by the sight. Not that she could feel the tomb anyway. She could feel the flow, but light, dark. She still couldn't differentiate those. So for now, she relaxed.

They'd be unable to for some time once they arrived.

"What will make this difficult is if Malgus's tomb is hidden or not. Most Sith Lords have very.. Open tombs. At least with them being marked as who's was who's. Do you know how to find water, at all?"

Darth Empyrean Darth Empyrean

maulbanner.png
Giving a nod, Dral thought of the trials and tribulations that would stand before them. His eyes focused on a point far off in the distance as his mind took him, as he thought of where this path would take them, and what they would have to endure to get the item that they sought for the Darth.

"I guess we'll just have to find out when we get down there, knowing Maliphant it won't be as easy as walking into a tomb, it must be hidden, or at least some sort of subterfuge to keep this Holocron hidden for so long. Water will be of no issue, I have many years of survival behind my back when I was a mere boy, and after my first stint with the sith."

Finishing his sentence the transport hit the ground, the ramp opening for the pair. Dral came out slowly, his eyes readjusting to the light outside as he stood at the bottom of the ramp, extending his senses for any sort of direction in this wasteland that was Korriban.

370d9lz.png

So they would make a good pair. Her with experience in these tombs. Him with experience in survival. Alina let herself smile a bit. If there was ever a time to show off, it was in this sort of scenario. If they don't, well. No one wants to look weak by the strongest Sith in the Lords. Her eyes narrowed as she stared out to the Korriban wasteland. She was already on thin ice with Darth Empyrean Darth Empyrean . And, she imagined, the Eyes of the Worm knew even more. Better to show why she was worth keeping around.

As the ramp lowered Alina joined her partner, stepping onto the dry, cracked land. The ramp promptly closed behind them, so it wasn't too much of a surprise once the ship lifted off the ground to leave the pair alone. She watched the ship as it disappeared, mostly to watch the direction to make sure she knew the way back. Then forward to the canyon.

"Let's go find water. Have to make sure we're set before we get thirsty. Then we can find the tomb."

Well, yes Dis’s favourite hosts were felinoid creatures like cathar or farghul, but it could have even listed other similar species. If such was not at hand, then bothan could fit into the choice, or any other animal-like species afterwards. Now it was lucky because it had a farghul among the acolytes, so its choice was clear. The man it approached apparently fell asleep again among the masters' words, and in response to Dis's words, the Shadowcat was very surprised. It didn’t really know that in this situation; in such a situation, what should be done, how should one react.

~ Kal Kal ?! What to do in such a situation?!~ mediated its telepathic question, almost in doubt, in the direction of its Shadow peer.

Fortunately, Dis didn’t have the mood swings that mortals used to have, and what it had previously told Kal that it didn’t really understand them. The strange reactions. But! But at least this man didn’t try to kill and beat the Shadowcat like many others did in the first reaction. Somewhere it was also a good result. After a lot of bad experiences specifically.

"Yes, I’m a cat and I’m a farghul… but that wasn’t my question. I'm Surur Pomi!"

Was that appropriate? Based on the girl’s memories, certainly, but since everything was mortal was different, it couldn’t be so sure of that in this standard pattern in this situation. Dis introduced itself in the name of the girl, which it found in her memories, seemed more correct than Dis, or Shadowcat; even if Dis meant a cat in the language of the Sith. After the next question, as Val leaned closer to see if the girl had a tail, Dis stepped back in confusion.

"Yes… I have a tail, I am farghul. We have to go to a tomb and get a holocron…" also tried to say something about the task.

Slumber, at least of the restful variety, was not something the insectoid woman was well acquainted with. She often tossed and turned between bed and desk, pouring over journals as if the ideas would fly away if she did not catch them in that very moment. When the troopers came, however, it was a rare moment in which that buggy brain had allowed a moment of rest, one that she was far from pleased to have disturbed. "What? What is it?" She mumbled, words slurred by sleep as the door opened. She blinked once, twice, at the troopers waiting for her before promptly closing the door.

Moments taken to gather her things and she was shuffling to follow their escort. Half awake eyes only taking a vague note of the other acolytes that gathered around her before looking up and - oh. That's a bunch of important-looking people. As Darth Maliphant spoke, her head tilted to the side, considering the information with questions forming and dismissing themselves just as quickly. Could she bring more than the holocron back? No, better not to ask for fear of being told no (or worse, that she'd have to share those findings).

When it came time to pair up, she looked about at the others with a slightly more awake flurry. Perhaps them-nope, already paired up. What about-nope, taken again. Her gaze at last fell to one both familiar and unfamiliar in equally strange ways. Curious. "We see you've no partner, do you want to team up?"

Same but different. That was how Kal would describe the teachings of the Lords of the Sith versus those of the Sith Empire.

There was the same focus on emotions and power, the same code, but a different end goal. The Lords of the Sith seemed to seek power for power's sake, to relish in the opportunity for infighting, whereas the Empire successfully or not sought to ensnare its own with ideology. The former would likely think themselves freer on that account, but to Kal was an elaborate illusion; they remained bound by chains of ambition and paranoia.

Well, with some exceptions.

"Certainly!" Smiling warmly at his insectoid-friend, Kal opted to make sure she recognised him without necessarily alerting the other Acolytes. <I see you have found your place among the Sith since last we met, Melydia. Personally, I am merely here to acquaint myself with their teachings.>

As pleasant a surprise as this was, they should probably head out; there would be time to talk while searching.

There was a certain warmth from the Devaronian's response that Melydia wasn't expecting. It was welcomed, surely, but the look of confusion on her face lasted long enough to be reminiscent of a loading screen before she gathered herself enough to respond. "We migrate there and here, uh, friend," she explained with a nod. "They move, we observe. Another acts, we also watch. What they teach, we are curious to learn, especially if it aids in the friend-making." She cast another long look at the Devaronian, walking and talking.

"Speaking of friend-making, what might we call you?" The familiarity of a previously made friend was there, there was no doubt about it. Yet be it due to the residual thoughts of a sleepy brain or an acquaintance that was made only in passing, she simply could not place the face.

"Do you need to grab supplies-can we grab supplies?-or should we trust the sands to deliver?" The rules of this contest were clear in the fact that there virtually were no rules, yet a lack of rules didn't necessarily mean a quick jog to the kitchens would be acceptable. The force help anyone who'd attended the summons still in sleepwear.

Pausing momentarily as if listening to something only he could hear, Kal returned his fellow Shadow's greeting, while trying not to make it obvious; he was hardly the worst at multitasking, but organic bodies were still just a bit unfamiliar. <Dis? I did not expect to find you here either.>

"Still following the flight pattern, I take it?" Referencing their first encounter though he was, Kal was hardly offended at her lack of recognition. Just as he had struggled to tell mortals apart in the beginning, so too was it to be expected that the telepathic ways in Shadows could tell each other apart were alien to her. <Your Host should have all the knowledge she needs, assuming she was selected for this. Best of luck.>

Not an advantage he could draw on - his associates knew an Overseer and thus one of Greystone's clones had gained a sudden admittance.

"Technically maybe possibly, but the troopers look impatient." Considering the prospect, he reached out towards the mind of the pilot as they were ushered into a shuttle. Gleaning the information he needed from the man through careful prodding, he eventually strolled up, nabbed a survival kit from inside a cabinet, and whispered something into the man's ear that turned protests into begrudging acceptance.

<In case you haven't realized, it is Kal again.>

She thought little of her new friend's pause, oblivious to any clues if there were any to be found. At mention of flight patterns, however, a small frown - of concentration, not displeasure - pulled at her lips. Yes that was a familiar phrase but where from...Her eyes widened as realization took hold. From shadow-friend to aquatic-friend to now, well, horned-friend? Yes, horned-friend fit.

"That's very fair," she admitted, casting a quick glance at the armored escorts, giving a quick wave to one of them, as if a moment of friendliness would encourage their friendliness as well. She could hope, at least.

Melydia watched, amused, as the horned-friend got his hands on a survival kit. "That's one way to do it, yes." A dissonant chuckle escaped her throat, quickly hushed for fear that it'd interfere with the mind games afoot.

"It is you!" Any doubt now dashed away, she could almost hug Kal. And she almost did, stopping short only when reminders that such actions weren't always well-received floated into her mind. "How have you been? How long have you been on sandy-land?"

If they'd picked up any since their spar? Arcturus meant since he'd handed him his own head on a platter he guessed. Not that he could blame him even for a moment, the fight had been more then fair. Too fair in fact. The kid had the smarts and skills that was for sure. He was still good though, maybe he didn't even know it, but then again how many didn't? Afraid, angry, or just desperate they were all there for one reason or another willing or not. Sooner or later though it happened to all of them, and he'd felt their future at the witchery lesson. It didn't end well for them.

"Not as well as I should most likely, but maybe that's why I picked you. Or maybe it's because we're alike." He pointed towards Alina Tremiru Alina Tremiru and Darth Arkanus Darth Arkanus as they entered into the first transport. "They're fighters and we both know if it comes down to a straight fight they'll more then likely take the prize. Neither of them are fools either, but they have their bonds already. We know who we are as well, or rather who we will be one day. We both heard the song."

Hitting up their own transport he still was shaking off the last cobwebs out of the brain for sleep as they took off into the air. "Survival comes first out here I'd say by the way your Master spoke. A tomb lost to time doesn't mean hidden but I doubt it will be as easy to see as some of the others, and from the sound of it we won't be dropped close anyway. Water, food and shelter then I suppose come first if possible. Not easy on Korriban, not easy anywhere the dark side touches." He said the last of it ruefully as he felt the transport bank flying deep into the desert.

Looking back up he gave a flash of a half smile before throwing Arcturus a question.
"So, what do you know about this Darth Malgus oh mighty researcher." It was said in a slightly less serious way, but the eyes never changed while he looked. He did actually expect the boy knew something, he always seemed to.

Though Surur Pomi moved out of the way when he leaned over to take a peek, Val did catch a glimpse of a whipping cat's tail, orange-furred like the rest of her and with extra fluffiness at the end which caused the limb to resemble a sinuous feather duster.

He nodded. "Nice to meet you, Surur Pomi. I'm Val. Sure, I'll go with you. Because you are a cat, and I like cats."

Having explained his reasoning and noting that she seemed a bit anxious, he motioned for her to start walking and fell into step beside her. "Do you know where to go? I was asleep while Teacher was giving directions." Teacher was the name Val had for Darth Empyrean Darth Empyrean , and indeed for anyone who ever trained or taught him. "But I did hear a little, and I don't think he knew where we're supposed to go, either. Otherwise he would find the holocron for himself instead of sending out search parties."

Dis Dis

So... He had heard it too.
The call of the void. The seeping darkness. That song which sang to Thesh from the deepest depths of nowhere. There was no way he could make such up, no way he could have known without experiencing it for himself. Quintus would be set upon a similar path then, if he chose to divulge it.
Not that Thesh had ever divulged it before.
That was how he knew Quintus was telling the truth.
Any doubts he might have had about their pairing vanished in that instance, and instead he simply nodded his head once.
"Well then, colour me intrigued. You know, I knew there was something different about you." His eyes shone in amusement as he spoke. How much this knowledge would help them in their immediate task he did not know, how far had Quintus even sought to delve after all? No it might have been an odd pairing, but Thesh knew that with time he could help Quintus unearth his true potential.
If the man would allow it.
Some were oh so resistant to the ways of the mystic and occult.
His mention of all that they had to prioritize was met with another nod, though Thesh had a few tricks up his sleeve where some of the issues were concerned. He'd already unearthed one tomb from beneath sands not too unlike those found on Korriban, and during his time on the edge of the Galaxy he'd suffered through a devastating drought. Food was the one thing he was genuinely concerned about, but they'd figure that out.
It was that or death. After all the chances of them happening upon the tomb on their first day was implausible. Korriban was much too vast.
With one last glance back toward Darth Empyrean Darth Empyrean he boarded the vessel, no hesitation in his step though perhaps there ought to have been. Korriban was cruel and cold and lifeless. If they weren't lucky, they'd end up in unmarked graves of their own.
"Malgus?" he mused, with a slight shrug, "Warrior, Commander... Had a thing for Twi'leks." Thesh had never understood mans obsession with Twi'leks. "A strong Sith, though I imagine only those who were strong are even remembered these days." The rest just faded into oblivion. How many among them would meet the same, forgotten fate?
