Directorate Officer
Corporation Name: Lucerne Biological Systems
Headquarters: Lur
Locations: Lur (Headquarters /Main Factory), Gessbrilbak (Biomechanical Research Lab)
Operations: pharmaceuticals, genetic engineering, cloning
Rationale: With Lucerne Labs's interest in biomechanical technology after acquiring on old Sekotan starship, Gir Quee began to hire biologists, chemists, and other specialists in that field to help support that endeavor. What started as a support team quickly became a division large enough that the Lab's split it off into a subsidiary or simple logistical reasons and to diversify the company's overall growth.
Tier: 2
Description: Lucerne Biological Systems as a separate entity grew around a closeknit core of Lurrian engineers who worked on the Labs biocomputer and organoform circuitry. In its earliest stages, these engineers formed the Lab's “Biological Systems” team and were based on the Lab's shipyard facilities on Hast. As it became clear that the team would be growing larger, Gir had an informal talk with the core team members at his villa about the future of turning their team into a larger entity that would have its own campus. At this point, Wern, the most salient member of this team, brought forward the idea of basing the company on their icy homeworld of Lur, since most of the team's members were from that world. Given Lurrian society's extensive use of biotechnology along with the facilities needed to manufacture it, Gir quickly assented to the plan, dispatching Wern to set up and acquire the proper facilities to start the business.
Lucerne Biological Systems became its own entity when the Lurrian plant, a sprawling complex that runs through a local ice-shelf and into a natural series of caverns. Using a combination of native Lurrian and galactic standard technologies, the Lurrian factory was actually a former native pharmaceutical plant. Several areas of the Lurrian plant continue to produce generic medicines for sale in the local Aprano Sector, though most of the newly furbished areas produce materials and organisms for Lucerne Labs budding biomechanical projects. Lucerne Labs also runs a much smaller research facility on the ocean moon of Gessbrilbak. Originally used to study a deceased Sekotan ship, this laboratory now serves predominantly as an area to integrate the fusion between conventional and biological-based science.
While still predominatly staffed by Lurrians, Gir took great care to incorporate researchers from other cultures and backgrounds when Lucerne Biological Systems formally became a subsidary, including the noted Ithorian hortoculturist Llim and a contingent of exiled arkanian scientists once known as the Adsacan Reformers. This was not only to ensure that no ideas and t echnologies would be introduced into the company, but also to ensure that the Lurrians didn't dominate the corporation's own culture, from management structuring to conceptual research decisions. Because of Lucerne Lab's current interest in biomechanical design, Lucerne Labs exerts some direct day to day operational control over some elements of Lucerne Biological Systems, but for the most part, Gir has adopted a laissez-faire attitude towards the company's direction, preferring to let market forces and the company's own internal cultural guide its day to day path.
