Lukan, Son of Merrel Dunn and Jamus Irving, was born on Corellia. Merrel's pregnancy was unplanned and the pair were young parents-to-be. Neither Merrel nor Jamus had been expecting nor planning to have Children. They instead chose to adopt Lukan out to someone that might love and better provide for him.
Lukan's adoptive parents lived on Nar Shaddaa. Daniella and Ezekiel Rath both proved to be loving parents despite not having a lot to their name and living in poverty, they adored their adoptive Son and sacrificed much in order to give him the basic needs he required. Food was scarce but not nonexistent and they had a roof over their heads.
Crime was an ever-constant concern within their neighbourhood but Daniella and Ezekiel were kind-hearted people and did their best to be positive role models for the young boy.
At 13 years old he had grown up with feelings of resentment and abandonment towards his biological parents who he had not met, yet his adoptive family had explained in few detail the process of adoption and how they came to love and care for him. Coming into adolescence, Lukan began acting out and eventually fell in with a bad crowd, often sneaking out of home and getting into trouble with alcohol and petty crime.
One dark and fateful night, Lukan would find himself under the influence of alcohol and in a disagreement with one of his perceived friends. The argument grew heated and in a blind rage, the other young man turned on Lukan and stabbed him in the stomach. Emergency Services responded to an anonymous call-in, and Lukan would be taken to hospital where he would luckily survive the ordeal.
What was most unexpected, more so than the revelation of his parents that the young Lukan had been involved in criminal activities and sneaking out at nights, was the report of an unusually high midichlorian count detected in his blood tests. This would pique the interest of the New Jedi Order, eventually leading a Jedi Knight to visit the family on Nar Shaddaa where Merrel and Jamus revealed their decision to send Lukan off to join the Jedi in the hope of getting his act together, turning his life around.
Once again, Lukan felt as though he was being rejected, sent off to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, not knowing what to expect.
