- Full-tang: With a tang that extends the total length of the handle, which is riveted to the blade; the rivets are traditionally concealed by leather wrapped tightly around the grip. This design rigidity lends the edge significant stability, which is required when its' traditional users put it under stress.
- Mono-molecular edge: The Iepener's tungsten carbide edge is forged into a single molecule thick and, as such, has phenomenal cutting power; any material of thin thickness and a molecular density comparable to duraplast or titanium is liable to slice open over the edge. When thrust with a Norr warrior's immense strength, it can also punch through personal deflector shields.
- Crossguard: There is an absence of a crossguard in the knife's design, making it difficult to use it as a parrying implement, giving someone wielding a blade with a cross-guard in a duel a potential advantage.
Called the "Little Opener" by its' masters, the Iepener to the Human or Near-Human appears to be a massive Norr fighting and survival knife. The Norr has manufactured the Iepener for millennia. It was designed to be multipurpose and used as a tool and weapon. As a weapon, it is ideal for thrusting, slashing and chopping. Thanks to its thin tungsten blade, it is extraordinarily resilient and hardy; the edge of the blade in military-issued models is honed into a mono-molecular edge to help warriors punch through typical ceramics, metals and polymer materials used as armour plate throughout the galaxy. Practically balanced perfectly where the grip and the blade meet, a skilled user can achieve impressive feats of dexterity. Additionally, because of the blade's balancing, it can be used as an effective missile or thrown weapon. As a survival and fighting knife, it has a full-tang design where the handle is riveted to the blade, and the blade itself extends the entire length of the handle, giving it excellent rigidity. The blade has a 'finger notch' where the wielder can slide an index finger to secure a grip on the blade at the precise location of the balance point. It is a cultural custom that Norr citizens carry an Iepener with the Koarte, the race's ubiquitous short sword.
