DESCRIPTION

When the Madrugar people re-invented Hyperdrive, they suddenly discovered that they were in the midst of a dangerous region of space. Moreover, by using hyperdrives, they created energy signatures that drew the eye of pirates and raiders interested in abusing them so that their valuable technology could be reaped.

The entire world shifted into a largely military economy for several years. A government-designed Heavy Fighter was developed, with the plans released to every aerospace manufacturer in their home system. For twenty years, the Ripper was manufactured in massive numbers and became the front-line patrol vessel seen in the home system of the Madrugar.

The ship was ridiculously overpowered, according to the perceived threat from outside forces. It had four laser cannons, four plasma cannons, and four rocket launcher pods. In addition, it carried a tractor beam so that disabled miscreants could be towed in and arrested. All of this firepower was driven by supercharged fusion engines, allowing these heavy fighters to scream across the stars. Unfortunately, all of these heat-generating systems required a massive amount of cooling, and Madrugar technology was still not sophisticated enough to make compact cooling systems. As a result, nearly half the fighter is comprised of a pair of oversized radiators. Also, with all of the hardware devoted to weapons, the fighter lacks any shield protection beyond simple atmospheric shields. Finally, the hyperdrive on the fighters is fairly rudimentary, intended to do little more than enable the fighter to make patrols near the system.

The Ripper would eventually be replaced with more nuanced and advanced designs, but it remains in reserve hangars for reactivation in case of a planetary invasion. Many Rippers have also been sold on the secondary market, costing only as much as a Tie Fighter. Its heavy armament is tempting to planetary security forces that desire an attack ship but can't afford a state-of-the-art example of the type. Some groups have even been known to place droid pilots in the cockpit. This idea is anathema to the Madrugar, but they have no say in the matter once their ships are sold.
