- The Maiden Crystals have been treated with Sith Alchemy in order to turn them from ordinary mundane crystals into what they are.
- The Maiden Crystals are crystals installed on a ship, often near the engine area or somewhere that is closely connected. The job of the Maiden Crystals, at its most basic level, is to provide that last touch of oomph to give that last boost of power to the weapons, engines, shields, or any other part of the ship.
- Every crystal births a Ship Maiden - a human looking woman, who is the very personification of the ship, including personality and moods.
- The Maiden Crystals essentially gives a ship a second wind to operate on, usually to get away and into safety or go out blazing, though creative pilots and commanders could use it for other things as well.
- Maiden Crystals are fragile and require layers of protection in order not to become damaged. But should a hostile or enemy get to the crystal and remove the layers, actually breaking it is a very easy thing to do.
- Maiden Crystals give the ship a second and last wind, but they cannot provide abilities that the ship they're installed in doesn't already have. This is just to make what functions, function for a little bit more, and nothing else.
- Maiden Crystals cannot fix ship hardware. If your engine exploded, a Maiden Crystal can't fix it.
- Maiden Crystals don't make the ship stronger or faster.
- Only one Maiden Crystal per ship. Using more does not give any additional benefits, does not yield extra oomphs, and does not yield more Ship Maidens.
With small territory, come big ideas.
The Maiden Crystals were an attempt to use Sith Alchemy to improve what was already there. Research and development began shortly after Whimsy moved its HQ to the Scintilla, at a window of time during which resources were scarce, and people had work smarter instead of harder or lose their lives. At the time, Whimsy had yet to take a step into ship building, and instead sought to create something that could help the few meager ships they had at the time, to give them just a little bit more oomph.
The Maidens that come with the crystals had begun as a side project of one of the scientists assigned to the project, who enjoyed the idea after reading stories with similar things on holoseries and games. The initial one he had made was meant for him and him alone, but others on the team had been curious as to what he'd been doing, and the secret was out shortly thereafter.
The Sith Alchemists of Whimsy set then to improve on it, turning the Maidens into what they are today.
The crystals themselves, in appearance, are nothing to write home about. Their sizes tend to range between the 50 centimeter and the three meters in height, most often clear but sometimes a very feint hue of a pink, purple, or blue can be seen in them. Only one crystal works per ship. An attempt to install more does not yield anything. The crystals are fragile and prone to break without proper encasing, so careful installation is highly recommended.
But what had initially meant to be a way to technically improve on the ships, instead became something that could be hot on the market. While the extra wind ships receive by having one of those crystals installed, it is the Ship Maidens that hold most people's attention, and that make the Maiden Crystals special.
