Description: From the beginning, the core of the Brotherhood of the Maw has been its marauder tribes. Before there were Final Dawn neo-Imperials or alien mercenaries or Sith fanatics, there were vicious and fanatical raiders, drawn from a variety of cultures but united by faith in the Dark Voice and the Three Avatars he speaks for. Some of these tribal warriors come from isolated planets throughout the Outer Rim and Unknown Regions, while others are slave-soldiers, broken by the Taskmasters of Gehinnom until no thought remains in their minds but to serve the Maw. Regardless, all of them begin as Aspirants, the lowest rank of marauder. Those who survive and thrive on the battlefield become veterans and advance in status. Most will die instead. There are always more hopefuls - and captives - to replace them.
- Unit Size: Large
- Unit Availability: Common
- Unit Experience: Recruit
- Equipment: Blasters, Slugthrowers, Vibroblades
Combat Function: Aspirants occupy the niche between psychotic, expendable Moon Children and veteran soldiers like the Tarar Warbands and Cirihut Warriors. They are numerous enough to form the core of a marauder force, and inexpensive enough to train and equip that losing them in droves does not greatly hurt the Brotherhood, but they are capable of following complex orders and acting as a disciplined whole. In battle, Aspirants follow the shock-troops and warbeasts, capitalizing on their gains and holding the ground they force the enemy to surrender. They are the anvil upon which elite Mawite units shatter their foes. Those who survive and make names for themselves on the battlefield rise in the tribal hierarchy and eventually join veteran units.
- Something to Prove: Aspirants are the lowest-ranked warriors in each tribe. They rise in status by killing powerful enemies, holding battlefield objectives, scavenging better gear, and enduring many battles and wounds. This is true not just for individuals but for entire units of Aspirants, encouraging the warriors to work together and seize collective glory. Aspirants obey orders without question and fight with all their strength, eager to seize every chance at glory for themselves and their brothers.
- Heedless of Death: Most Aspirants are slave-soldiers, brainwashed with the theology of the Hidden Maw. They firmly believe that their actions are in service to the only true gods of the universe, and that they will be rewarded for their part in cleansing the galaxy by fire. They do not fear dying in battle, and indeed believe that this is the best way to die, as it demonstrates full devotion to the Three Avatars. Overwhelming odds and suicidal orders do not faze them in the slightest.
- Poorly Trained: Aspirants rely on savagery and fanaticism to fight effectively, and lack the discipline and well-drilled unit tactics taught to the soldiers of most governments.
- Poorly Equipped: Aspirants die often, so they are given only the most basic of gear, suitable for basic infantry engagements. Anything else they must scavenge on the field.
The Brotherhood of the Maw returned to the known galaxy in 864 ABY, and at that time was already comprised of a core of marauder tribes. While every tribe was culturally different, united only by their zeal for the Gospel of the Hidden Maw, they all had certain similarities in basic structure. Their cores were formed of young, unproven warriors who would either die on the battlefield or endure and rise in status, gaining experience and scavenging better gear along the way. Different tribes had different names for these warriors, but all could be broadly described as Aspirants, those new to the Brotherhood and seeking advancement. As the Brotherhood has expanded its territory, new tribes have arisen, and these marauders also follow similar structures... structures built upon a foundation of Aspirants.
