STRENGTHS
- Tugboat: On its own, a Caroler-class vessel's array of tractor beams and towing cables allow it to safely push or tug along vessels ranging from the size of starfighters to larger cruisers. When working in concert, multiple tugboats can be employed to tug much larger ships.
- Passengers: The Caroler is equipped with several columns of highly-configurable guest quarters, which can be used to house up to 600 people for purposes of evacuation.
- Fast: In order to reliably haul larger vessels than itself, the MC230a houses a vast array of ion drive engines that grant it nearly unparalleled speed when not towing another ship.
- Highly Automated: The Caroler’s network of droid brains and its central AI Administration program allow it to keep its crew to a minimum, as a happy side effect allowing for more of the vessel’s space to be devoted toward power generation or passenger capacity.
- Single Craft Hangar: Via an opening in its ventral hull, the Caroler can be used to load a single craft under 50 meters in length. This may be a smaller patrol vessel, a defensive fighter, or perhaps a light freighter.
- Lightly Armed: The Caroler-class carries no offensive armament to speak of, save for a single proton torpedo launcher designated entirely for use as a last resort. Though it possesses a complement of laser cannons for purposes of repelling pirates or the starfighters of hostile factions, these are largely included to maintain the morale of its crew and passengers. In an actual combat situation, the Caroler is not difficult to be overwhelmed.
- Power Drain: The immense energy drain necessitated by the tugboat’s tractor beams means that when actively tugging another vessel, its point defense grid and shielding systems must be rendered entirely inactive, leaving the craft vulnerable to hostile attack.
- Armor. What’s That? Aside from the Caroler’s wing and forward prongs, it’s hull is entirely unreinforced by any form of armor. The limited portions of trimantium rigging it possesses is purely for purposes of supporting its tractor beam projectors and towing cables.
First ordered into construction by the Galactic Alliance, the MC230a Caroler-class Tugboat was a rather modest contribution of the Mon Calamari Shipyards when analyzed alongside the Mon Calamari warships of the modern galaxy. A tugboat first and foremost, the Caroler was designed with limited offensive application in mind, carrying a measly assortment of point defense guns that were included with a lack of utilization kept in mind. The vessel’s strengths would instead lie in its complement of powerful tractor beam projectors and reinforced towing cables; when appropriate to the situation, the Caroler could tug a dormant vessel from behind, or push it forward via the tugboat’s forward arrays.
Naturally, the Caroler line was adopted into the complements of shipyards and rescue services across the surrounding Alliance and otherwise allied space. The vessel's tractor beam emitters would find purposes tugging heavier vessels from spacedocks and into a position to set off from home ports, drawing damaged vessels into yards for repair, or even inserting large mission pods into the hulls of newly created starships.
In addition to its tractor beam arrays, the Caroler would be recognized for its assortment of modular passenger quarters, which in a matter of minutes could be configured to carry up to twenty passengers in a single room. With thirty of such units, the vessel could be made to carry 600 passengers in a moment's notice, and as a result, would be utilized by various rescue services and similar military operations for the purpose of evacuating larger starships, stations, or ground-based installations.
