MED (Morals, Ethics, Diplomacy) Lesson: A license to kill ?

The Silver Rest ~ Temple of Kashyyyk
Moral Ethics & Diplomacy: "Taking a Life".

For centuries, as far back as there were Jedi, it was decided that there had been the need for law enforcement and intervention where conflict was present. A duty of the Order, even as far back as the first Je'daii Civil War (Arguably influenced and originating from the very time), where members of the Order would put themselves out on the front-lines of the Galaxy's most grim and volatile grounds in the hope of discouraging violence and criminal activity, oppression and unnecessary harm to others.

The stance and pursuit was a tough lifestyle, a career vested in endangering oneself for the sake of others, and it rarely came with reward or acknowledgement from those outside of the Order. The Jedi were looked upon with vast controversy, and some feared them for their abilities just as much so as they did the Sith, regardless of the good intentions and mantra or doctrine they followed in their service to the people. There were many questionable factors to a Jedi's role in the Galaxy, and their actions taken out in the field would forever come under the scrutiny of witnesses, for good or for worse, representing the Order through how they chose to act or behave outside of the Temple they studied and called home.

Today's lesson was certainly to be an interesting one, and with the likelihood of numerous opinions being aired, Veiere had every expectation that he would need to play the mediator for the subject he would air to the group. For many a Jedi, whether one called themselves a Silver Jedi, or part of any other Jedi Organization (of which there were many), there had always been varying degrees of aggression in the roles a student might choose to take. Guardians for example, known stewards in combat and acting first in the field where as Consulars like Veiere himself often preferred to pursue the theoretical and mysterious aspects of one's life in the Order. For the best outcome today, he hoped to hear from a variety of them, especially since few people these days ever stuck to one role.

Kiran had made it a point to remind himself about the class that Master [member="Veiere Arenais"] was having today. The Padawan always found his classes rather interesting and extremely useful, despite the fact that he was late to the last few. Well, that wasn't going to happen today, he was striving to at least be the first person in class today. And while his class today was covering a rather good topic, considering Kiran had taken a life already, well more than one if you wanted to get technical. Neither of those were as Jedi though, and he was glad this topic came up. If this class didn't take place, then he would end up asking one of the members of the Council about it.

Just something that would steer him away from that path, which was darkness or so he believed.

He was more than sure that everyone had their own opinions on the subject, and he was rather interested to hear what everyone had to say about it. He knew that everyone was entitled to their own opinion and different outlooks on this were practical.

On a completely different note, he was happy to know that he was the first one to class today and he wasn't late.

Unless Master Arenais changed the meeting place up again....? -_-

The young knight closed her eyes, taking a few moments to relax in the sunlight that filtered into the classroom, a soft breath slipping from her lips as her fingers thrummed a beat on the arms of her chair, the sound exhoing aorund the room as she slumped down in her seat. She knew that she should probably be sitting up, paying attention, especially considering who the teacher was. She's always been slightly in awe of Veiere Arenais, and that was before she started dating his son. She knew that it wasn't like he would purposefully give her additional focus or too much attention, but she always felt that he would, teh nobody Jedi who was involved with his son, what parent could help but be protective. It's why she was torn, part of her wanting to be up and bright -eyed and bushy tailed, but the class hadn't started yet and relaxing in the sun was just so relaxing...she might be part cat now she thought about it.

Truth of the matter was that this class was one that she was particularly interested in, a topic that as they said was near and dear to her heart. In the last few Silver Jedi mobalisations she'd been forced to confront the issue again and again, was it worth taking a life, if so when? What provocation was worth ending another person's life? It was so easy, could be done with the snap of a finger, with less effort than painting a nail. She'd tried to restrain herself and had almost died as a result, but to go in the other direction, to listen to the voice of self preservation would mean putting her life, those of her friend and family above all otehrs. It wasn't a dilemma for which Asaraa had an answer, not yet but she had her thoughts and was interested to see what the other attendees of the seminar thought, what they'd experienced. Maybe it would help quell the storm whirling around in her head.

Jayden walked up to the door with anticipation at what would be his first lesson as a Padawan. He had done a bit of studying up on the teacher thinking of the irony between one who hated politics yet had been thrust upon as a king. Jayden had his own idealistic view that all life must be guarded but didn't have a understanding of what that would actually entail. He drew in the energy around himself to help wash away his nervousness and opened the door into a simple room where two fellow students where already waiting inside.

He greeted both with a bow. Not exactly knowing what was protocol in this setting. He walked to a chair by a window looking out at the yards still in awe. He attempted to expand his awareness to get an impression of the other two but all he could sense was general receptiveness which befit the setting they where in.

While he waited he tried to drop into a meditative state.

Mikilanna, like always, spent her fee and personal time in one of two places; the Temple Garden or the Archives. Both, to her, held foundations she believed would allow her to harness her potential, growing into the Jedi she was destined to be. Though the two locations where different in design, they equally held knowledge from which she could study and understand about both the Force and life itself. And it was today, a couple of hours before the class, that she elected to spend the time in the archives. She had frequented this room so often since her arrival into the Order and the Temple, that the Jedi librarians that oversaw the archives had cleared a corner in the back, with a window that looked out into an impressive view of the Temple Gardens, unofficially turning it into her own personal study room.

"And what topic are you researching today," one of the librarians asked when Mikilanna entered the archives. Over the past two weeks, the young Padawan had been studying and researching the ability known as animal bond. With the help of the archive overseers, she found enough substantial material that now allowed her to grow comfortable in learning this Force ability, however, without a Master it was difficult to gauge if she was properly applying the ability. She was a work horse, but she also understood that dangers of repeated failures. So she tabled the topic for now.

"Actually," she began coming to a stop at the counter, "I'm looking for texts underlining the topics of morals, ethics, and diplomacy as it regards to being a Jedi, or to the Jedi."

"I'm afraid we don't have texts that exactly pinpoint what you're seeking, Padawan Mihaly. Such topics are, well, topics of discussion."

"It was worth a shot. Thank you Master Kor," the Felacat replied. "I'll take the holodiscs about the Mid-rim worlds. I'm trying to familiarize myself with the galaxy the best I can."

Two hours later, she arrived to the classroom, not the first but also not the last to arrive. She took a spot at the front, gently sitting down in a cross-legged position. She was perhaps the youngest of the group, potentially not having much to offer to the discussion; but sometimes listening was far more productive than talking. And besides, perhaps she might surprise herself and have positive feedback to add.

[member="Veiere Arenais"] ... [member="Kiran Arlos"] ... [member="Asaraa Vaashe"] ... [member="JadenKorr"]

The latest of Veiere’s padawans finally stepped through the open classroom door, seemingly the last to arrive, at least as far as she could tell as her green eyes traced the varying Jedi already present. She had not been Veiere’s padawan for very long now, at least, that’s how it felt. She had known her first master since she was a child, while she had known Veiere a mere six months. Illyria was still adjusting to the night and day experiences. She hadn’t even known this was a class one had to sign up for, it was Veiere himself who reminded her to attend, verbally wrestling her away from her instinctual tendency to seek solitude.

And now here within this classroom she stood defiant to her habits, seeking not a corner to study alone nor a distant space to train, but here in the company of her fellow Jedi. She turned to Veiere giving a quick and half-hearted bow, though it was not born from a lack of respect towards her master – no, in fact, she was quite grateful to him for taking her on after her original master’s death, coupled with the respect she developed for him during their time talking as he recovered from the conflict in the Azure System. Rather she was simply not accustomed to protocol, much of her life spent deep within the Shadow Lands training alongside her seemingly hermit master, thrusting aside protocol in favour of practicality.

Yet it appeared the class was not yet formally starting – perhaps she was not the last after all – and after a quick surmise of the class interior, she found herself taking a cue from the pink-haired Jedi and finding a seat beside her, Illyria allowing herself to sink into the rays of sun that bled into the room. The touch of sun was always something that was, in a way, nostalgically familiar to her.

With a casual gait, in no particular hurry, and yet with a meticulously timed departure, route, and arrival time all laid out in her head, Captain Allura Kahli approached the area where Master Veiere had scheduled his open classroom. If it had not intended to be open, the Umbaran woman had ignored that qualifier. So far as she was concerned, everything was open. The only self-imposed exception was that of the Jedi Councils' private chamber. Some things were not worth testing unless a valid reason presented itself.

A long, but light-weight black jacket and black leg-sculpted leggings were what most could make of the woman as she neared. Her hands were shoved into deep pockets, and the shadow of a smile graced her lips. At least she hadn't come with a cigarra between her teeth -- wasn't that thoughtful of her? Think of the Padawans. Such impressionable men and women, and no one wanted a bad example set, did they?

After Kahli stepped across the threshold of the class, her pale eyes scanned those already in attendance. Echani, Feline, Hapan, and two Human-kin. Four Padawans, one Knight. Some might call that diverse. The pales ones might at least understand if the Umbaran broke out in laughter at some point during the discussion. Oh, she'd try not to of course. But why else would she attend such a darling discussion group if not for its humor?

She drifted into the room and found a comfortable enough place behind or beside the rest. Best to keep everyone right where she could see them. It was a lifestyle choice. Nothing personal.

Veiere was pleased to see those who had chosen to attend the lesson, and in a timely fashion too. It was always appreciated when students and attendants turned up on time rather than entering the room late and disturbing a lesson. Fortunately, Veiere had never been too hard on his students where these things were concerned, more so his Padawan but not so much his class attendants.

"Greetings everyone" Veiere acknowledged them all with a gesture of his hands to either side, welcoming them all to the lesson officially; "Today's lesson is, as you're likely aware, a Moral Ethics & Diplomacy Class...-And the subject for today is a matter of controversy that has followed the Jedi, Silver or otherwise, throughout the entirety of their service to the Galaxy, all the way back to the days of the first Je'daii Order" he smiled knowing that the subject would bring a plethora of input from his class, always eager to hear the opinions and thoughts of his students, peers and fellow mentors.

"Today, we are going to talk about the moral implications of killing, and whether it is right or justified for a Jedi to take a life" He explained with a voice filled with apprehension for the sake of those who were listening, wanting them to here his reluctance and understand the importance of the subject; "It is an unfortunately inevitability that we, as Jedi are likely to experience hostility in one form or another. We seek to discourage and put a stop to the violence and abuse of others, so there's always a risk that you will be forced to engage someone for one reason or another...-But how far do you go in fulfilling your duty, and what needs to be considered when resorting to the use of a weapon or your lightsaber?".

"To get us started, why don't we look at why we may be forced to fight others, for whatever reason. Do any of you have any idea's?" he asked the group, always preferring his class lessons and discussions to be shared and openly discussed among them.

Late...

Of course she was running late to a class she had signed up to take. Her day had started off so well and now here she was, running through the halls towards the designated chamber.

She reached her destination, skidding to a stop in the entryway. Out of breath, and bent in the best bow she could muster, she spoke between pants,"Forgive my tardiness Master Arenais, everyone!"

Kiran forced himself to hold in a chuckle as [member="Alaako Maashaa"] entered the room. Not that her tardiness was amusing, but just the fact that before her, KIran himself was always the last one to class. So, perhaps it was amusing, but not in a bad way or so he though. He gave a small wave to Alaako from his seat before looking back to [member="Veiere Arenais"]

The Padawan wanted to blurt out 'because they had to' but that was such a bland answer, however he was going to follow it up with something else. However he thought more about it and the most evident in his mind was.

"When we are threatened?" Kiran said as he raised his hand to his chin for a moment. "Threats can be empty, but threatened to a point where we have no choice but to respond with our weapons?"

This area was jumbled about within the Padawan's mind. While he knew what the right thing to do now was, but back then it seemed like such an easier option. He had been instructed that the darkside was seemingly always the easier option. Perhaps because it was easy to get lost in that void.

Today's topic was going to be a productive lesson indeed. She sat in silence, formulating a response to the proposed question. Personally, she had never killed another individual. In cat form, back before she entered the ranks of the Silver Jedi, she went on hunts with her family; but that was to hone their skills on far lesser and weaker animals; but they ate their kills, not taking pleasure in the act of killing. The thought of taking another's life, well, she never really put much stock in to such a notion. The more she thought, the more she began to feel waves of questions rise deep from within.

It was another Padawan that spoke first, adding to the discussion the possibility of threats toward a Jedi individual. "Very few outside criminal minded individuals dare to threaten a Jedi. Empty or otherwise, as Jedi are we not above being drawn into feelings of threats? But if we do find ourselves in a threatening scenario, at what point do we cross over the line of pacifying the individual into violence? When all attempts of a peaceful solution are exhausted or they draw first and attack," she asked her fellow Padawan.

To the class and Master Arenais she adds,"And what of the Sith? They force us into life and death fighting scenes constantly. Is killing a Sith justifiable for the greater good of the galaxy?"

Veiere's attention turned to [member="Mikilanna Mihaly"] for a moment as she had said "-as Jedi are we not above being drawn into feelings of threats?"; the words causing Veiere to smile to himself for the discussion that these lessons so often encouraged.

"We are still sentient after all. Jedi or not, even we can feel threatened at times" Veiere replied, seeking to remind the class that they were still every part as vulnerable as any other member of society, no matter how much training empowered them in body and mind. "You do raise several good points however, and questions that were bound to be discussed today..." he offered her a nod of approval before looking to the rest of the class, many choosing not to speak as of yet.

"Jedi are often faced with aggression when we step out into the galaxy, into the field of duty, with assignments such as keeping the peace and aiding a local security force for example. Enforcing the law of a world means that there's an element of control being placed upon the civilian life, made law by their government. The Assembly would of course determine whether the law is justified before sending out it's people...-But if you were to come up against a criminal element during this assignment, you might well be forced to engage them in order to pacify a potential threat to yourselves or others..." Veiere offered a loose example in answer to his own question, while Mikilanna and [member="Kiran Arlos"] had done a good job of sharing their thoughts in response as well.

"Now...Imagine you're out there helping the security officers, and someone gets angry with you and draws upon a weapon. This obviously will put others around you at risk...-It also begs the question of the value of one life over numerous others. What happens when we have to choose between harming one person for the sake of the many? Is the greater good, a good reason to take a life?" Veiere asked the room, provocative questions that would no doubt leave some of them feeling uncomfortable and wary of answering, yet they were all free to share their thoughts and opinions. It was all for the good of the class to talk about these sensitive subjects in a place of security and education.

Allura just smiled. Oh, and her eyes were positively aglow above that smile. 'Pacifying.' The pale one and the Master had used that euphemism, and it had brought a smile to the Umbaran's lips. Dear Jedi and their hopeless pursuit of a bloodless world where a calm voice and a sure belief would rule them all. A nice fantasy, and one that demanded not being blunt about out-right murder with good reason. Which brought everything back around to this classroom -- when was violence acceptable?

"You harm them," the Captain spoke up at last. Obviously the Jedi already have their philosophical claws in most present, so time for the Black Sheep to roar. "But before we get too deep into this," her attention swept out across all present, "let's be clear about the one thing every person here needs to do before their next mission -- you need to know where you stand. If you have any doubt whatsoever and are forced to make a snap decision, you may come to regret your decision."

Her eyes turned back to the Master then. "You harm them. You kill them if you must. Like the Padawan said, if they won't stand down and if you can't use the Force to disarm them, you don't let them harm others so you can rest well at night -- though I don't see how you would rest easy after letting them harm others either. One life isn't worth a city, or a planet, or the galaxy."

Tag: [member="Veiere Arenais"] | [member="Asaraa Vaashe"] | [member="Kiran Arlos"] | [member="JadenKorr"] | [member="Mikilanna Mihaly"] | [member="Illyria Sol Rhia"] | [member="Alaako Maashaa"]

Asaraa pressed her lips togetehr for a moment before nodding at the captain as hse finished speaking, "She's right." Her hands pulled idly at the fabric of her top, running the material through her fingers as her blue eyes swept over the room, resting on the other Jedi there. Everyone seemed to have their opinions on the topic, and she definately got the feeling that Veiere was trying to push the discussion to see how everyone would react, what their thoughts were. If that was the plan, it seemed like she was going to drop a stone in the pond then.

"There was a mission, not all that long ago, what you're describing actually," one hand gestured in the Jedi Master's direction, "we deployed out to help a local government with some riots that had taken over the city. We didn't think it would be anythign serious...but things kind of got out of controll really fast. I started off not wanting to hurt anyone, just took their weapons and sent them running, and it worked for a while...for a while." The girl's hand came up, brushing her hair back from her forehead, one finger tapping against her temple. "One of my...'victims' didn't take to that so well and ended up braining me with a stone. If the ranger's hadn't come to my rescue." The girl's hand fell down to her side, her hair falling back into position as she took a deep breath, collecting herself.

"We can give people a chance, we can give them every chance they can but not everyone will give you that opportunity. And then what, do we let someone else get hurt, do we let ourselves get hurt, get killed?" Her voice trailed off for a moment, the memory of an ocean of energy filling her thoughts. The feeling of drifting away into that energy, "We can't always give the that, give it all up. Sometimes you don't have a choice, and if you draw a weapon, any weapon then you need to be prepared to use it right, need to be prepared to kill with it if necessary right?"

Alaako was listening intently, intrigued by all the opinions and responses to Master Arenais's dialogue. It was piquing her interest highly. She had grown up hearing the fantastical stories of the Jedi and their martial prowess. When they had fought battles on the front lines, winning the wars of the more ancient Republic. More often than naught, she found herself daydreaming of intense clashes of multiple lightsabers against any number of opponents. But here, the talk was of another of the order, that of the Silver Jedi, that contradicted her current views. It didn't bother her in the slightest. Instead she found herself wanting more on these topics.

For the time being, Alaako held her tongue. As a newcomer here, she waited and watched those around her. Her notes would continue to fill the pages before her as the guided discussion continued.

Metis woke up slowly moaning as she turned over in her sleep, she was having a good dream, a very good dream, one that she reluctantly roused herself from. Groaning Metis sat up and stretched her muscles feeling well rested as her muscles strung themselves taut, she began flexing and rolling her arms and back. Yawning Metis scratched the tingles that seemed to always be there after resting for any period of time, bunching hair hair up and itching her scalp. There was something that she was meant to do this morning as she searched her mind. Metis glanced at the clock.

“Karabas”

Metis scrambled out of bed. For once again Metis had a lesson, and once again she was late. Metis tripped out of her bed sheets and opened her cupboard throwing clothes out of the way as she searched for her padawan attire.

“I’m late. Again. Why am I always late”

Metis mumbled too herself tying her hair up into a bun as she put on her footware. Metis glanced in the mirror than rushed towards the door. Beforre remembering her notepad, running to her desk and gathering the necessary supplies. Doing a quick check list in case she was forgetting something, remembering nothing immediate, Metis realised she’d have to hope for the best.

Metis run through the hallways looking up the designated room number as she did so. Darting past various Jedi and Staff of the Academy Metis almost overshot the room the lesson was in. Metis chewed her lip nervously taking a deep breath before entering the classroom.

"Apologies Master Arenais"

"Let's be clear about the one thing every person here needs to do before their next mission,
you need to know where you stand. If you have any doubt whatsoever and are forced to make a snap decision,
you may come to regret your decision".
[member="Allura Kahli"] raised a crucial point in regards to preparing oneself for any sort of field work as a member of the Order of the Silver Jedi, no matter the position one held, Jedi, healer, exploration or Military. Looking to the Antarian Captain, Veiere gave a firm nod and gestured to the woman for the emphasize and attention of the rest of the class. "And this is why our training is often so extensive and long lived. All organizations that fall under the Order of the Silver Jedi's influence, undergo some form of field training in survival and combatant practices for this reason. Despite best planning ahead, out there in the Galaxy, nothing rarely goes according to our expectations and there's always a vast margin for error". The Order of the Silver Jedi's business was all about directly influencing other peoples lives; hopefully for the better, though not everyone saw the Jedi that way.

"...-Sometimes you don't have a choice, and if you draw a weapon,
any weapon then you need to be prepared to use it right,
need to be prepared to kill with it if necessary right?"
[member="Asaraa Vaashe"] spoke of a personal experience, in agreement with Allura's point. The Lightsaber was a powerful tool in the hands of every Force Practitioner, and the Jedi were taught to use this as a last resort. The truth was that Asaraa was correct, there would be a time where that feeling of innocence for every Jedi Padawan would eventually be challenged in the need to defend themselves or others against those that took their lives into their own hands at the expense of their own safety. Often-times these were Criminals whom refused to be arrested, but sometimes things could be far more complicated than that. Sometimes you could be facing someone who had lost themselves to the Darkside of the Force or suffered deep seated mental illness and knew not the consequences of their actions until too late. No matter the reasons, every man or women within the Order of the Silver Jedi were required to come home to Kashyyyk knowing that they'd done all they could to fight for the right reasons and the best possible outcome in every assignment handed down by the Silver Assembly.

While many of the others remained silent and seemed reluctant to speak up for themselves as of yet, [member="Metis Athena Elpis"] suddenly took the Jedi Master's attention in her late entrance. Doing his best to withhold a quiet chuckle, Veiere simply smiled to her and gestured for Metis to join the rest of the class. Frankly, the silence of the others wasn't unexpected. The ethical boundaries that could be crossed during times of extreme tension out in the field could be a matter of life and death, and mistakes could be made so easily on instinct alone, misplaced and accidental.

"As a member of the Order, or the Antarian Rangers, it's often our responsibility to support the law of Governments whom request for our aid or otherwise reside under our influence within Silver Space" Veiere continued; "While this may sound very black and white, some-times the laws of other worlds can conflict with our personal views. Take Hutt Space for example, the Order of the Silver Jedi doesn't support slavery, yet many of their worlds do. Were any of you to take an assignment on those worlds, you may be forced to choose between the greater good...-You may be forced to work against the authorities in place there...-What would you do in this situation, where providing freedom to impoverished persons would mean bringing the law down upon yourselves and potentially even involving the rest of the Order?".
