"I don't understand, but I feel like you know me. Like you're being sincere. Oh, you are a sweet child... Where did you get this sweetness from? Not from your grandmother..."
Megumi Hoshino was born on Atrisia. At one point she was married and had a daughter; they were both killed in an unspecified battle. Her last remaining relative was her mother, who later passed away from illness, leaving Megumi alone. On the day she received the news of her mother's death, she was performing at the Fortress of the Dawn. It was there that she first encountered a young Jacen Nimdok, the great-grandson of her employer, the Empress Sawa Ike.
The boy was being taught by his grandmother the art of "Claiming", a practice by which he could use his powers to bring someone under his control, making them into an ally or servant. Sawa told Jacen that if the person was in a heightened emotional state, they would be easier for a beginner to Claim. Upon seeing Megumi crying over the news of her mother's death, he chose to practice on her. They spoke and Megumi revealed the cause of her grief. Jacen comforted her, and was able to Claim her. When Sawa asked what he intended to do with her, he said he wasn't sure.
Ultimately she would fall into the role of personal assistant to Jacen, managing his affairs whenever he visited his mother's homeworld. She kept an eye on his grandmother's court, reporting on any new developments. While it was rare for her to leave Atrisia, she would occasionally travel with him on business. As Jacen grew older, his view of Megumi changed and he became no longer fully comfortable with the origins of their relationship. But he didn't know how to reverse the effects of the Claiming, and Megumi herself didn't seem to want to stop serving him, as it gave her a higher purpose in life beyond that of a mere musician.
