Memories of Arda: An SSC Mission

Prologue

Arda is an oceanic terrestrial world filled with endless deep sea treasures. Located in the farthest reaches of the Eastern Rim, she has gone unknown to the galaxy at large for thousands of years. An uncharted paradise where most of the native lifeforms have only recently migrated onto land-based habitats. Indeed, much of the planet's Megafauna and Megabeasts still reside deep under the ocean's surface. Leaving the open skies as wild new territory for the first few species of birds and gulls to explore.

Yet nearer the beaches of this pristine paradise lies the remnants of an extraterrestrial crash, long long ago. Leaving some of the islands populated with humans and near-humans. A caste society stuck in the pre-iron-age of evolution. Their technological prowess being lost to them by hundreds and hundreds of years. Not even the ruins of their giant ships still remain.

It is here in this wide blue world that the Levanites first discovered it. Marking the sphere ripe for exploration, colonization, and... For preservation. For surly the local natives could never be integrated into modern society. That would be like putting tuxedos on cavemen. They simply need more time.

And so Arda remained a virginal world in Levantine space. And when the Sanctum joined with the Silvers? So did their star charts mark the world Arda anew. A wild ocean people. Perfectly preserved. Yet, not alone in the universe at all. So the SSC sent it's first probe in a decade to go and chart the solar system anew. To count the moons and numbers the stars. To lay in wait at the brand new Hyperspace Beacon next to Arda's brilliant Sun, for the SSC's eventual return.

Alas. This old probe has gone missing and surly fallen into the wide Arda oceans. An old probe with an Anti-Matter core that could spoil much of the native wildlife and prove a dire hazard to the local peoples. Should it ever be found. ...So the SSC has returned to Arda early. Come to fetch their lost probe and see Arda preserved anew.

Chapter 1

The Harliquin Four, SSC Exploration-Class Cruiser
High Orbit over Arda

They had been in orbit for four hours now. Taking scans of the planet's surface and documenting the movements of the solar rays from Arda's Sun. The probe had been located off the shore of a large continental landmass near the equator of the planet. Sensors put the depth at 150 meters. A distance well underwater. But not unreachable.

The Harliquin's shuttles were still being prepped for underwater action and with new Anti-Matter radon shielding. Then they would be loaded with special Aqua-droids would make the recovery. A time-consuming process. But always necessary.

In the meantime? Karen Roberts stood on the busy Flight Deck. Readying her away team with a loud shout,

"Okay everybody. If you're coming down to the planet to take samples for the Lab, then climb aboard the Pelican Shuttle. We've got work to do. Yeehaa!"

The massive shuttle has space for many squads and equipment. Not unlike a cargo plane, it was going to be a bumpy ride. Still? Probably better than being cooped up in a Science Criuser for another eight hours. Unless you were into that sort of thing? ...Bleh. Karen was most certinaly not,

"Look alive Marines! It's time to grab us some fresh air!"

...

Mission time was estimated to be eight hours planet-side. So bring a lunch.

There was a lot happening and the chiss raised an eyebrow. Looking over some of the things there in her equipment pack while making sure it was fine for getting wet. The sasori divesuit along with link up to the submersible probe droid so they could get a clear picture. Hell the divesuit was highly protective compared to most and built to be used for days on end when needed on planets so she was all for it. The sonic emitter working perfectly before the massive collection of her purple hair was going into the headpiece so she could fit the helmet on.She was looking at the rebreather and the smaller tubes they could work with before checking her boots and utility belt of equipment. "Ready to go." The jedi didn't carry a lightsaber preferring her skills poured into persuasion and guile.

The nine most frightening words in Basic were: I'm from the Jedi, and I'm here to help.

"Good afternoon! We're gonna have a great dive today!"

Sliding across the floor with his bare feet, the young Nautolan was clad in his everyday clothes. The one piece of special equipment that had been requisitioned for him was a Sasori survival circlet. On most people, the Sasori circlet was small enough to be a bracelet or anklet. With Zak as small as he was, it had been re-sized for wear as a choker. With his Nautolan physiology, the depth, pressure, and temperature of the water were all things he was adapted to tolerate. The circlet would screen out any harmful radiation in the water however.

Also, being that he was Nautolan, the youngling was also something of the resident dive master. Even as an aquatic, he still breathed gas -- just filtered and separated from out of the water as opposed to inhaling air -- so the issues of tissue absorption and oxygen interchange under multiple atmospheres of pressure were all things that he experienced the same as the mouth breathers. His anatomy was just specialized for handling such things.

"Our target depth today is at a hundred fifty meters," the boy remarked, as a holo of the oceanographic environment popped up over his shoulder. Gesturing to the landing zone, the boy added, "Surface temp is around twenty-eight centigrade, and we can expect twenty centigrade at depth."

In the grand scheme of things, not hostile ocean conditions at all. They were another two hundred meters above the thermocline, but twenty centigrade was still cooler than the humanoid body and so hypothermia was still possible with the dive profile they had. "Arda... Arda has, like, unpredictable typhoon-like conditions on the surface, which can create strong riptides," Zak went on to explain, as different meteorological animations were supplied over the top of the ocean graph. "If you get pulled into a riptide, it's important to swim per... perpen... perpendicular to the direction you're being pulled."

With that said, the boy looked out over his troop of diving professionals and offered this sage advice.

"Remember: Rip it, roll it, and punch it!"
