"The galaxy doesn't remember silver spoons and handshakes, it remembers blood, iron and salt. Legends aren't born by pissing about."

- Merridius Black's first words to new crewmen

  • Merridius Black, known also as The King Kraken, was a human male Nihil raider from the oceanic moon, Trask. With his relaxed attitude towards authority and his philosophy of might makes right he managed to become a successful pirate and privateer. Originally the son of a black market smuggler, Merridius was orphaned at a young age when his father's aquatic freighter was sunk by a massive mamacore subspecies known as a kraken. As his mother had left with his unborn sister years prior, Merridius had no living family to care for him. Following his father's premature death, Merridius was left stranded at the point of departure for his dad's ship Greyiron Harbor - a floating town frequented by criminal organizations, smugglers and pirates.

Merridius' relationship with his father had been unorthodox, the elder Black treating his son more as a business partner than a child. Merridius found himself frequently hiding merchandise on his person and performing other tasks for his father's business. His father even paid him for these tasks but rarely showed affection or provided physical or emotional comfort. Even those outside their close circles thought that Merridius was treated more like an investment than a child. Though troubling, this experience would become vital as the young Merridius was forced to survive the unforgiving seas of Trask alone.

Using the skills his father had taught him, Merridius survived by selling himself as a black market goods mule and even by rigging gambling games at local cantinas. These activities earned him a reputation as a troublemaker and he soon had to learn to fight when he began making enemies of gangs and black market dealers. It wasn't long before learning to brawl wasn't enough and a sixteen-year old Merridius found himself on the run from a death mark after betraying an off-world gangster. However, before the gangsters men could find him, an attack was staged against Greyiron by a remnant tempest of Nihil known as The Forgotten Sons.

The attack was vicious as it was targeting a smuggling operation known to be dealing in Sith Imperial weapons - which had been stolen after the fall of the Eighth Sith Empire. Countless were killed during the attack, during which a crate of Sith explosive was accidentally detonated. The resulting explosion sunk half of Greyiron into the sea - taking Merridius and hundreds more with it.

While most inhabitants of Greyiron were amphibious, blood from the battle had attracted predatory creatures of the ocean. Within minutes those in the ocean were swarmed by hungry animals, including mamacores. Seeing this, The Nihil parked their ship just above the surface of the ocean - taunting the survivors and offering those who could fight there way onto the ship sanctuary. The ocean turned to chaos as hundreds clawed, fought and scrambled toward the ship - many drowning or being devoured in the process.

Even as they reached the ship many were simply pushed back into the sea by the Nihil themselves. Merridius himself nearly drowned, but in a last spurt of adrenaline he clawed up and over several others - directly resulting in their deaths - and threw himself into the Nihil ship. When the raiders attempted to throw him back he fought back, managing to break the fingers of one assailant. When the Nihil leader saw this will to survive and fight he ordered Merridius to be allowed aboard - stating that he had fought for and taken the right to live.

Only dozens of the hundreds were lucky enough to recieve Nihil favor. The others drowned or were eaten by the creatures of the sea. Those who were chosen, however, were called The Drowned (Wo)Men by the Nihil and were forcibly taken in by the raiders. The number of survivors only decreased from there as some tried to escape their captors, only to end up spaced for their trouble. Most of those who survived were children and adolescents - most of whom were taken under the wing of a willing Nihil.

    Merridius was once such case.

A Twi'lek male Nihil by the name of Osko took Merridius in - eventually instigating a sexual relationship. While not fond of this, Merridius learned well from Osko and over time began to see himself as one of their kind. It was not hard to as Merridius was praised for his strength in surviving the ocean and he quickly found himself deeply entrenched in the Nihil philosophy of owning only what you fight to take. By the age of 24 Merridius has all but completely renounced his heritage, replacing his old identity with that of a Nihil raider. At this same age Merridius challenged Osko's command of his tempest and ship - resulting in a duel for leadership. Even after Osko was beaten Merridius did not stop his attack, beating the Twi'lek to death with bare fists in a moment of violent rage.

It was then that Merridius took command of his own vessel, emblazoning its hull with the vissage of a Traskian Kraken - a predator that twice was a major obstacle in his life and had been overcome. The man's command skills, violence and ability to rouse Nihil sentiment saw him quickly ascend in the ranks of favor in The Forgotten Sons fleet. By age 30 Merridius was considered by many to be the second-in-command of The Forgotten Sons and had earned his nickname as The King Kraken.

Unfortunately, The Forgotten Sons luck would run out. During what was supposed to be a raid on an illegal spice convoy the Forgotten Sons were ambushed in what was revealed to be a trap by bounty hunters. As the Nihil vessels approached the freighters sonic charges within were detonated. Most of the Nihil fleet was decimated in the blast and what was left were quickly assaulted by a force of coordinating hunters. In the end most of The Forgotten Sons were massacred or captured, Merridius among them...
