- Starfighter Nest: The Merrigan is effectively a hangar, but in space - by dedicating virtually its entire interior space entirely to starfighter storage and maintenance, it is able to deploy no less than four full squadrons from its two-hundred-metre frame.
- Noncombatant: Unarmed except for a small number of anti-starfighter laser cannons, the Merrigan fares abysmally in close quarters combat.
Named after the long-dead Fleet Admiral Merrigan, architect of the eponymous Merhsk-Merrigan Joint Arms Doctrine, the Merrigan-class Light Carrier is uncompromisingly specialised in accordance with the very same doctrine, its internal space dedicated almost entirely to carrying capacity at the expense of all else, including proper ship-to-ship weaponry.
While primarily designed to support cruisers or even ESDs as part of larger task forces, it is not uncommon for Merrigans to be used as patrol craft, their vast hangars making them well suited for deploying the swarms of hunter-killer drones favoured by Erakhian tacticians.
When sold to non-Erakhian forces, common complaints include a complete lack of viewports and that organics are "packed like sardines" - since the Erakhian Federation relies almost entirely on droid starfighters, these vessels were simply not designed to carry four full squadrons worth of pilots and support personnel... and it's not like droids need a view.
