Private Minor Illegalities

Marcis was not, by and large, a particularly law-abiding individual.

That was not to say he considered himself a criminal, mind you. Rather, he simply saw no reason to adhere to laws that did not concern him. He was Sith and would obey only two things - strength and institutions worthy of respect. As far as he was concerned, most governments had done precious little to earn his respect.

As for strength, your average jackboot posed little to no threat to someone with his training.

As such, it never even concerned to him to consider legislation pertaining to proportional force when a mugger began pointing a blaster in his direction. The man - a down-on-his-luck Rodian - didn't even have time to finish raising the firearm before a pale hand grabbed his own, preventing him from squeezing the trigger. Before he could verbally react, Marcis' other hand snaked forth and crushed his windpipe.

"This was not a fair fight. You did not deserve a fair fight."

Disgustedly tossing the blaster aside, he proceeded through the alleyway as if nothing had happened, leaving a dying man in his wake. Perhaps it would be wise to keep his business brief.

Lily had been assigned to investigate mugging cases from a world outside of Coruscant, it was a chance for her to get off world and see a bit of the galaxy. It was still within GA space and should pose no harm to her since it would be expected to be a safe world to travel to. When she first arrived, there was the usually meetings of officials and warm welcomes. Lily did her best to represent her Master, the Order and her family well. Ensuring that all who encountered her knew that the Echani name of Decoria was associated to someone regarded highly.

It was clear once she started to investigate the numerous cases of mugging, smuggling, and some spice trades that she would need to report back to her Master that the government were slacking in their duties on this world. Though she would try to frame it in a polite a manner as she could. Especially since she was sure that it would be a struggle for any government to be crime free, even Coruscant, the capital, wasn't crime free. So, she would note what resources and measures would be needed to ensure a reduction in crime and how these resources might be funded appropriately. This was a lot of paperwork, following her analyses of the planet. It was nothing exciting nor was it necessarily great Jedi work but she was still early in her training and handling this paperwork felt similar to her mother's work on Eshan. A lot of that had been done in a similar fashion so Lily was familiar with the ideas and was able to work swiftly through it all.

Once the paperwork for the day had been concluded, she decided to patrol the streets once more. It would be good to offer a reassuring presence to all those around her. While she was patrolling, she noted a Rodian slouched, dying at the entrance of an alleyway. Rushing over, she checked his vitals and attempted to ease his pain and hopefully prevent his death.

"Is anyone able to help me? This man is injured and needs serious medical care!" Lily called out as she looked around, finding a couple that were near her, she gestured them over. While normally she would stay with the injured person till they were fine, she needed to find who had done this crime. It was terrible, leaving someone to die so recklessly.

Walking down the alleyway, she kept a hand on her training saber as she looked around, investigating the area best she could. Listening out for any noises that could direct her to the perpetrator.

Closing his eyes and inhaling sharply, Marcis remained stationary for a long moment. He was being followed.

Given the lack of blaring sirens, law enforcement seemed unlikely. Associates of the would-be mugger? It seemed likely. Without further ado, he slowed his pace and began to make his way somewhere more remote. If they wanted vengeance he would indulge them; frequent exercise was key to maintaining peak fighting performance.

If they put up a good fight or were motivated by something honourable like loyalty, he would even let them live.

Finding a broad alleyway to be satisfactory, he spun on his heels and assumed a relaxed stance about a dozen paces from the corner. He was not overly concerned about blasters - he had speed and he had his bracers.

After a moment's consideration, he removed his cloak, folded it up carefully, and stashed it atop a clean-looking container. That left him in trousers, a close-fitting sleeveless shirt, and the gleaming bracers at his wrists.

Walking forward, Lily felt the familiar tingle at the back of her neck, the hairs raised as she followed the path in the alley. Someone was connected to the Force, which made this more confusing. Why would a Jedi attack someone and leave them to die? It couldn't be a Jedi, no, she didn't think anyone calling themselves a Jedi would do that. This person needed to be either a grey Force User or a Dark Side user. If it was a grey Force User then she stood a chance to survive. If it was a Sith or some other kind of dark Force user then she would be in more trouble and have to fight for her life. So, she really hoped it was some kind of grey Force User that was playing vigilante.

Stopping, she looked around. "I know you are here. I just want to talk, you left someone to die and I wish to understand why."

Lily kept her hand on her training saber, making sure that she wasn't caught off guard. She was determined to attempt a diplomatic solution, while her combat skills were more than enough to ensure she could survive most situations. Lily was also wanting to make sure that the whole situation was understood because the situation felt strange, off and she was feeling uneasy.

No, not friends of the mugger. Something entirely different.

Closing his eyes and steadying his breath, he honed in on the incoming presence. Force Sensitive. Trained? Yes, or at the very least acquainted with their potential. A Jedi? Probably, or at least something comparable.

Opening his eyes, he raised an eyebrow at her request. Was that uncertainty? He would know soon enough.

After some consideration, he approached her with a practised, methodical gait. From the moment he entered line of sight, he eyed her appraisingly, but she would not get a verbal response until he had positioned himself across from her. His stance was relaxed but ready for rapid action, while his amber eyes were attentive.

"He is - or was - a thug. He attempted to mug me and paid the price. Why would I spare an honourless cur?" His tone was gently chastising, as if she should know better. As if he expected better from a fellow Echani.

When the person stepped out of the shadows, Lily was shocked to see it was another Echani. That complicated things for her, since she did not presume this would be an encounter she could resolve if she fought with her saber. In fact, she was feeling cold aura, something that she had learnt was the aura of someone connected to the Dark Side. Lily was disappointed that a fellow Echani would fall prey to the lies and misinformation of the Sith and Dark Side ways. It was attempting to achieve power quickly, a falsehood that you had achieved the strength when it was strength not earned and never respected.

"It was not your place to kill him. You are not judge, jury and executioner. He would have been punished for his crimes if you would have brought him in. Instead you decided to play god and decide to attempt to end his life." As far as Lily knew, the man was still alive, he was not doing well when she found him but she hoped others had been able to get the appropriate levels of care to ensure his survival.

Taking her training saber out, she ignited it and held it down. Waiting for the Sith to attack but not looking to jump into a fight yet. "Due to your actions, I am afraid I have to request you come with me so that you will face punishment of your own. You can't go around attempting to kill others, it also seems that you are a Sith as well." Letting him aware that she knew who he was.

Breathing in deeply, she was pleading that he would come in willing, she did not want to have to fight this man.

"I'm not some fumbling fool," Marcis replied, visibly annoyed. "If my goal was to kill him he would be dead. I simply did not care one way or the other." Death and fearful survival were both adequate outcomes.

The important part was punishing the insolent cur.

Raising an eyebrow at her ignited saber, he shifted his stance to one more suited for rapid movement. "I don't think so. I have no interest in obeying the laws of my lessers, Jedi. I do not mind a bit of exercise, however." He did not have high hopes as to her performance, given her use of a training saber. Still, perhaps she might surprise him.

Given how his previous Jedi encounter had turned out, he was starting to think the Jedi might be overrated.

Seeming significantly more cheerful than he had been mere moments before, Marcis bowed as if this was little more than a practice bout, then paused long enough for her to do the same if she wished.

"Your actions would state otherwise, you left the man to die, only for him to be found alive and the possibility of your identity being discovered. You were tracked by a Padawan to this location." Lily stated in a sharper tone than she would normally have, the notion that this man did not care about killing, only wanting the person to suffer. It rattled her, brought out a side of her that was more fierce than she usually appeared.

Noting the stance he had adopted, Lily sighed, "it is unfortunate that this is the course of action that you have decided." Her tone was sincere, she was deeply regretful that it must end in a fight but she could not let him go if there was any chance she held of fighting him. When she was called lesser, her body wanted to call him out for such terms, she was Echani nobility and her family part of the matriarchy of Eshan. If anything, he was her lesser. However, she held her tongue for the most part, "lesser?" Slipped from her lips.

Switching into the first Echani fighting form, Lily was presenting herself as someone still early in their training, both in Echani combat and in Lightsaber combat. She gave a short, curt bow, then adjusted her stance into goading him to be the first to strike. She was preparing to give the performance of an unskilled fighter to boost his confidence before she swiftly and effectively demonstrated her hard earned talents as a fighter.

"He only saw a glimpse - and I let you find me." His annoyance seemed to be fading now that battle was approaching.

His lips twitched towards a smile at the hint of indignation that slipped through. So the Jedi had not completely eroded her pride just yet. "Democracy, Jedi. The rule of the masses is the rule of the unworthy. Society wilts as numbers outcompete merit." To think the Jedi were shameless enough to champion such nonsense, despite their own power.

So far this particular Echani had not impressed him. Her stance was basic and her opinions weak - what kind of self-respecting warrior considered testing one's skill at arms 'unfortunate'? It was baffling; who had trained her?

Instead of rushing in, he began walking towards her at a methodical pace. He was ready to counter her, but did not seem all that interested in striking first; if she did nothing he would eventually get close enough to render her lightsaber useless.

If she insisted on aligning herself with such pitiful ideals he would just have to force a bit of strength out of her.

"So you say." Lily stated coolly, insinuating that his word meant little to her. He had not demonstrated himself to be an honest man. He might not think of himself as a liar but she could never trust someone aligning themselves with the Dark Side and those associated with it.

She stood her ground, "democracy is a choice, a choice that should be respect." That was her stance, Eshan had a monarch and she was happy with that but it was the decision of Eshan to have that, if other planets wished differently then that was their decision. Lily refused to impose her views on others.

As Marcis edged his way, Lily kept patiently and still till he got close. Within range of her blade, she jabbed forward. While her attack was precise, she ensured it was wholly obvious her intentions. She was testing him, this was to see where his skills laid and how much she would have to give.

It was clear the other Echani had little faith in his honesty, despite him making no effort to deceive her.

It was by no means unreasonable, given the predilections of many of his fellow Sith, but Marcis had always favoured a more straightforward approach - he preferred stealth to lies and a fist through the chest to poisoned food.

His only response to her defence of democracy was to shake his head in puzzlement.

Her jab earned a greater response, the Sith seeking to bash the lightsaber upwards and outwards with one of his songsteel bracers while one of his feet snaked forward kick at her ankles. A simple attack warranted a simple response.

Seeing the bracer deflect her blow, it provided some insight into the ways that this Sith fought. He preferred hand to hand combat, that he had built his skillset and equipment around hand to hand combat. Lily was skilled with that as well, most Echani she knew were but she doubted that she would defeat someone who was dedicating their lives to such methods of combat. However, she knew keeping him at bay, at a distance would provide her with the best chances.

His kick was a simple retort to her attack but also informative. He was not divulging his skills, or attempting to overpower her with flair and skill right from the bat. Her body shifted and let the kick hit nothing but air. From her position, she struck towards the side of his knee. Crumble his stance and weaken his joint.

To avoid him just attempting to grab her leg, Lily sliced her training saber towards his throat. Hopeful that he believed this to be an actual Lightsaber that could do deadly blows to him. Her movements slightly more skilled but still only a tip of the iceberg in terms of what she could do.

She was not completely inept, at least. He would know soon whether she was mildly disappointing or holding out on him.

In response to her two-front attack, one hand lanced out, driving the metal of his bracer against her lightsaber - a lightsaber he strongly suspected to be a training model, based on its appearance. The resonance of plasma against songsteel would confirm or deny that suspicion, no doubt. He had blocked both before and knew the sounds by heart.

Not to mention the heat he would feel if it was a proper sabre - no amount of insulation could completely stop that.

His response to the kick was more novel - instead of pulling out of the way as she had, he leaned away from the blow, pulling back just enough that a hard strike to the knee would turn into a grazing hit to the shin. It would quickly become clear that he was attempting to pin her leg with one of his in order to trip her or force them together.

The closer the better, given the difference in fighting styles.

The two blocks demonstrated that this was someone well trained as an Echani, few Jedi could handle attacks happening at the same time. At least those were meant to be at the same level as her. His block to her training saber would indeed reveal that this was not a real Lightsaber and therefore did not pose the similar risks that a true Lightsaber would pose to him. But it was also surrendering the information that she was in fact not that advanced in her training. Very fresh beginners carried a training saber and not a full Lightsaber.

With her kick only turning to a graze against the shin, Lily grunted, the attempt to trip her up worked. Only because she allowed it to work, out of her options, letting herself be tripped was better than being trapped too close with this man. From her fall, she broke it into a roll that created distance and breathing room for herself. She was giving him the advantage if she could help it and would get mucky if it meant that she would survive this.

Breathing in deeply, she decided that she couldn't afford to hold back any more, in fact she needed to use the full extent of her training. This guy was tough and she had to respect that by giving her best in the fight. He was Echani and she should have realised his fighting skills would be on par with her own. Moving in closer, Lily closed enough distance to start twirling her blade around. Her feint strike to Marcis's head was to create an opportunity to strike at his leg. While it would only be stunning strikes, if she could incapacitate him then she could remove his gauntlets and bind him up to bring him back to Coruscant.

Her body language shifted from a naĂŻve fighter that was clumsy to one who had spent years honing themselves into a blade sharper than any sword.

His attempt was a partial success, but she was skilled enough to eliminate the window of opportunity; he could have rushed after her, but it would have been on her premises. Instead, allowed the distance she had created to remain. For now.

Her most recent move marked a transition. She seemed more experienced by the moment.

She had been holding out on him. Wonderful. It had been too long.

Momentarily distracted, he spotted her twirling faint too late to fully evade it - instead of taking another glancing hit he allowed it to strike home, wincing slightly in response. At the same time, however, his other leg lanced towards her centre of mass.

He should invest in some songsteel for his legs if he had the chance; perhaps shinguards?

Her feint had worked, the deception through her body language and such had been something she struggled over the years to overcome. Her aunt was much better in deception, Lily tended to be too honest in what she would say. Instead of the excitement of being able to start her onslaught of attacks though, Lily had to face the consequences of her commitment to the downward strike. The Sith's leg struck out and hit her square in the stomach. Causing Lily to take several steps back. If she hadn't learnt years ago how to remain calm when winded, this fight would likely be over. She would likely be unable to handle since her breathing was erratic and she could not handle the thought of losing this fight already.

Instead, her body remained calm and her breathing recovered swiftly, letting air flow back in naturally. It was a cheap shot kick from the Sith. "Is that truly the best you can do? Seems becoming a Sith really weakens an Echani's fighting skills." It was purposefully goading statement, targeting his pride and presumed cockiness in his own skills. Lily wanted to see if her words would impact the Sith, draw him in.

Her mockery earned a snort from the Sith, but he seemed otherwise unbothered.

"I am not some empty-headed brute, Jedi," Marcis noted, though he did briefly consider shooting her in the leg. He doubted she would see that coming. That would be dishonourable, however - and a success would worsen the fight.

Still, if she wanted a tougher fight, she would have it. Near-invisible runic patterns carved into his forehead suddenly began glowing a soft orange; as this happened, he felt his vision sharpen, his senses heighten.

Breathing steadily he opened himself up to the flaws in the woman - and in particular her lightsaber.

Without further ado, he launched into another attack, this one composed of a series of lightning-fast jabs, grabs, and punches. Unlike before, his focus was on her lightsaber as he sought to disarm her or break it outright.

The bait had not worked, in fact it seemed that he was holding back. Not because he assumed she was not able to handle it but because there was something else holding back his actions. Honour? It seemed strange for a Sith to hold something like honour in such high regard but she could not help but see the honourable intentions in his movements.

He did ramp things up and runes glowed on his forehead, it was something that strengthen his connection to the Force, that much she could sense. However, whatever he was using in the Force, that was beyond her limited understandings of the Force. Instead, he shifted into attacking her full on, in aggressive, deliberate movements. It was clear that he was now attempting to disarm her, that he was seeking to destroy her training saber. Lily did the best she could, defending herself and keeping her movements sharp and giving demonstration of her expertise in Echani martial arts.

It was not enough though.

Eventually he broke through Lily's defence and her training saber was broken. Leaving her unarmed. Lily knew this was coming moments beforehand, it was inevitable but she did not let despair take over. The understanding on his honourable ways gave her a plan.

"Well done. How about we fight this more traditionally? Give some more honour to this fight. It is clear we are both skilled Echani, let's see how skilled you are." Lily had jumped back to create some space once more, but she removed her jacket, throwing it to one side. She stood there wearing a crop top, leaving her arms bare and demonstrating her willingness to fight this like they would on Eshan. No Force, no weapons, no armour and just demonstrate their skills and convictions.

He struck true and the lightsaber shattered, leaving his opponent unarmed.

Finishing her off at this stage would likely have been relatively straightforward, had that been his goal.

Instead, he eyed her thoughtfully as she made her gambit. Rationally speaking, there was little benefit to her proposal, but he was by no means a purely rational creature. A lot of what he did, he did for the challenge - and there was neither challenge nor honour in defeating a foe in her position. That alone was enough to sway him.

"Very well." Tilting his head sideways, he continued to eye her thoughtfully. "I am Marcis Sorr. What is your name?" Some might consider giving out one's name in such a situation foolish, but his last valid public record was from a while ago.

In that context, his name added little to the risk of identification.

Without further ado, he unclasped his bracers, then pulled off his shirt for good measure; his clothing was partially reinforced, whereas hers wasn't. As far as he could tell, anyway. It seemed only fair.

Just as importantly, removing both kept the bracers off the dirty ground.

Her gambit had paid off and it was perfect. She had a chance to keep things level and ensure that she didn't lose the fight. Or at least, buy enough time for reinforcements to arrive, not that there was likely to be any.

When asked what her name might be, she was tempted to lie to avoid harm coming to her family or being hunted down, however she faced the issue of not being able to come up with a suitable lie. Therefore, she was honest, "Lily Decoria." Her name was one of newer nobility. Her family's house had not been of noble standing before her mother's position but their presence as nobles was one that was firmly made through the sacrifices her family made to protect the nobility during the Mandalorian's attack of Eshan.

As Marcis set his gauntlets on top of his shirt showed their importance and value to Marcis. It was something worthy of note. Lily also couldn't help but note the striking figure that this Sith held, she had rarely sparred with men and rarely those who had revealed as much of their figure as Marcis had. It was strange to think on that but she didn't see anything more to the situation than that.

Moving forward, Lily began with sharp kicks towards Marcis in order to knock him onto his back with the power of her legs.
