Mirror's Edge Catalyst

If you're like me, you love Mirror's Edge despite its flaws. If you're like me, you enjoy hearing news about the upcoming game. Here is one such piece of news, alongside today's name reveal:

Two years ago we revealed that we were making a new Mirror’s Edge™. Last year, we gave you abehind the scenes look into some of the early progress we had made. And though we haven't said much else in all that time, we have been listening. Thank you for your incredible passion and your patience. I'm excited to tell you that it's paid off — by this time next week, you will have finally seen more of the game at E3.

Mirror’s Edge has always had a special place in the hearts of all of us at DICE. The first game had a lot of promise. It was unlike anything else in terms of the gameplay and style — it had a unique soul. But as much as we loved that game, we knew it could be more. So that’s what we have set out to do as we introduce Mirror’s Edge to a new generation.

The team has spent a lot of time re-evaluating every aspect of the game and making it a new experience. This is not a sequel, this is not Mirror's Edge 2. We have landed on a vision that honors the first game — pushing the boundaries of first person movement and diving deeper into the story behind our heroine Faith — but also brings a lot of great new, interesting gameplay and features to the experience for our players.

So on behalf on the entire team here at DICE, we can’t wait to show you what we have been pouring our heart and soul into. We can’t wait to introduce you to Mirror’s Edge™ Catalyst.
Personal wish list?

  • Better melee combat
  • A teeny bit more quality time with a sniper rifle
  • Dishonored/Thief-style multiple-possible-approaches
  • A plot

I'm pretty much fine with everything else. Mirror's edge has its problems, but it's a favorite. So hearing that they're actively reinventing the thing from the ground up? Me, I'm stoked.

Here. Have some pretty new art.

Beginning countdown until Kentarch grumbles something about Dishonored 2.

I am a heathen.

Never played Mirror's Edge.
Let's talk about why you need to play it:
  • Immense frustration followed by massive payoff
  • Unique and unforgettable design aesthetic
  • Parkour
  • Dystopian parkour
  • This kid:

I liked the original game despite its flaws it just didn't do a lot. The story was thin and you didn't really get a sense of why you should be against the world. Yes they oppress the people but things were really clean it seemed to be prospering, most seemed to be happy and we never got beyond a few peoples views of what the government did. Which it came off more opinion and their experiences instead of the whole. Looking forward to to seeing what they do

RPS has E3 saying this'll be open world, no levels. Hot dang.
An open world first person runner... that could be awesome but... I don't know. I mean would that mean we can be on the streets and tunnels and have to take an elevator or stairs to get up the buildings? Some of them looked huge... doing those staircases could be killer. Or maybe I am overthinking how it could be. Either way I would want to see it and try it.

This was a cracking bit of fun first time around, I'm certainly up for more! :D

Looks very slick.

I made sure to watch the original game when I figured out I'd never get a chance to play it. It's always been interesting that the special, arcane PC magic that they used for this one (the Force in Kotor, memory screwery in Remember Me) was just parkour. Remarkably mundane talent for a world-shattering plotline to be based around, which is cool.

Anyway. Great game getting the sequel it deserves. Now all we need is Beyond Good And Evil getting the same treatment. XD

This game is supposed to have VR support. Played the first one with an occulus rift kit at my friend's place. OMG did I scream like a girl with that thing on. Gonna be some fun.

At the time it totally was. It seemed like you had a brief phase where you griped about Dishonored anytime any other game got mentioned. Which is fair: I'm probably more hyped for Dishonored 2 than I am for Catalyst.

Well yeah it was like they only new piece of intellectual property that game since 2010 that doesn't have an outrageous sequel count, and was then a slight letdown. *Eyes Fallout 4*

Although not to grumble about this but uh, you know there have a bunch or rumors Dishonored 2 pushed back until mid-2017.
