Recognizing the limitations of traditional shielding technologies in multi-ship engagements, the Sith Eternal sought to develop a defensive platform that could provide total strategic cover for entire battlegroups. Inspired by the ancient cataphract cavalry—armored knights who formed the impenetrable core of ancient battle formations—this vessel serves as the metaphysical equivalent: a bastion that shields the vulnerable with unyielding force. Designed in limited production due to the complexity of its construction and ritual systems, the Cataphract is deployed only at the center of high-priority formations where the loss of command vessels or fleet cohesion would be catastrophic.

At the heart of the Cataphract lies the Heart of Aegis, a Sith alchemical nexus that does not function through circuitry or computational protocols, but through living ritual. To activate the ship's defining capability—a fleet-wide metaphysical shield—a specialized unit of Chorus Units must enter a state of synchronized trance within the Cradle of Null, a cathedral-like chamber buried deep in the vessel's armored spine. These Chorus Units are not traditional Sith, but engineered, Force-sensitive constructs—grown in bio-synthetic wombs and embedded with harmonic interface nodes that allow them to sustain chant-based resonance with the Heart of Aegis. Through ritual recitation of ancient Sith hymns, they awaken the nexus and generate a protective barrier capable of enveloping dozens of ships within a vast energy field.

This barrier is not static—it is dynamic, able to be modulated through Shield Song Protocols. By altering the chant, the Chorus can shift the shield's properties to better resist specific forms of attack, such as high-yield turbolaser barrages, ion storms, or even certain esoteric psychic weapons. These protocols are maintained by the Echoform Neural Chorus Interface (ENCI)—a networked array that synchronizes the mental state of the Chorus and stabilizes the resonance. Once fully active, the Cataphract's Over-Shield Harmonic Amplifier distributes the field across nearby vessels via the Fleet Link Synchronization Node, allowing them to phase their own shields in rhythm with the central projection. However, this power comes with profound weaknesses. The Cataphract cannot instantly activate its field—the chanting takes time to initiate, leaving the ship and surrounding fleet exposed for 60–90 seconds. During this phase, the vessel's maneuvering and weapons systems are significantly reduced, and it relies heavily on escort ships for protection. If the ritual is interrupted—by psychic attack, boarding actions, or the death or silencing of the Chorus—the Field Fracture Compensation Array may attempt to stabilize the projection, but even it cannot fully compensate for the collapse of the chant.
