Missile - TL-01 Counter Missile
- Manufacturer: Locke and Key Mechanics
- Affiliation: Closed-Market (Any character can use this if they have explicit permission through, for example, a marketplace purchase),
- Model: MR-01 Counter Missile
- Modularity: No
Production: Mass-Produced. (Anyone.) Characters refer to NPCs & PCs.
- Material: Durasteel, Aluminium
- Short-range kinetic kill device
- Releases a cloud of chaff
- Solid nose of Durasteel provides the counter missile with a solid punch when impacting missiles or other vehicles.
- Payload of aluminium flecks released after impact can confuse the sensors of any other missiles or fighters nearby.
- The chaff will also act to absorb much of the explosive load of a missile although it would be consumed in the act.
- Use as a kinetic kill device requires a direct hit by the missile, meaning if it is avoided or shot down then the missile is rendered useless.
- Chaff only covers a small area, easily dodged or avoided by moving or flying through it. The chaff is also unable to stop multiple ships or missiles spread out from spotting the target.
- The missile is a useless counter to anything with shields capable of protecting them from physical hits (most fighters or assault concussions missiles.)
- Due to the smaller size of the counter missiles they only have a limited range making them a weapon of last resort. Their limited size also means they require a specialised launcher to be fired and can only be swapped for other micro-missiles.
After the success of the TL-01 Counter Missile Locke and Key Mechanics looked to see what other uses their micro-missile technology might have. They settled on a physical counter to missiles or vehicles that might be chasing them. So was born the MR-01 Counter Missile.
The Missile consists of a solid durasteel warhead designed to impact and kill a missile or vehicle. Not ones to let anything be created that doesn't have a secondary use, the engineers at Locke and Key also included a chaff package designed to provide a screen against any other missiles or sensors. The chaff came with an additional surprise, many missiles come with a high explosive package, and given the short range of hte counter missiles, some of that explosion could reach the defending ship. The cloud of particulates in the chaff had the benefit of providing a defense against the explosion. Effectively providing a temporary shield against the blast.
