- Able to tackle strike craft or capital ship with equal ease.
- Versatile: The Huntsman is able (after a brief recalibration period) to adjust its firing mode to either a rapid burst of explosive/incendiary projectiles, or slower but far more powerful bursts to damage capital ships.
- Deadly: The Huntsman projects super-condensed shards of X17 at many times the speed of sound, and as such strikes with singular violence at distances greater than most conventional lasers/turbolasers can manage.
- Recalibration: While the Huntsman can serve as either a main weapons battery or a flak emplacement, it cannot do both at once. Users wishing to switch from one to the other must endure a lengthy (approximately 30 second) period where the weapon is entirely inoperable, reducing the attached vessel's overall firepower.
Essentially an upscaling and refinement of the widely-feared phosphor drivers found on Helix Solutions vehicles, the Huntsman is the first in a long line of naval assets contracted by the Tsis'kaar.
The weapon operates by igniting and simultaneously supercondensing a mass of X17. The diamond-hard, approximately 2800-degree mass created by this process is then launched at nearly 15% of the speed of light toward a target. Upon striking a shield or solid object, the magnetic containment ruptures, subjecting the impact point and anything nearby to blast-furnace temperatures capable of instantly moltenizing most metals.
The effect on target is generally horrific, as starfighter targets may find themselves sealed in their own cockpit with a seething mass of molten chemicals. Capital ships fare little better, as even should the weapon fail to breach a hull through kinetic force alone, it usually leaves a patch of sizzling, metal-eating chemicals that can cause further damage over time. Vacuum is no defense against these flames, as they will cheerfully burn in any atmosphere, or no atmosphere.
What's more, the Huntsman is capable of engaging small agile craft as easily as larger ones, via an ingenious active recalibration which changes the weapon from a fast-firing flak emplacement into a fearsome ship-to-ship weapons battery.
However, this versatility comes at a cost, and a potentially deadly one. The commander of any vessel utilizing these weapons must usually choose their configuration ahead of time, as recalibration is often fatally slow in combat, where split-seconds matter. A captain who has set all his Huntsman emplacements to flak settings can expect little other than a grisly death should he be faced with frigates instead...
