Multiple Subs Using The Same Image

So in the past, and for the longest time, it was that no two subs could use the same image design for a sub. I think it's a good idea to have it on the book as it helps keep faction designs more distinct, since the image is taken to give the rough outline of the ship in the thread. If seven ships all use the same picture, then all the ships look the same.

A good sub-clause would be that if the owner of Sub #1 doesn't care that the person making Sub #2 is using the same image, then it's fine.

The submitter does not own the image. Therefore, I judge he has no claim that he can declare that only he can use it -regardless if the first person using it cares or not. We also have a similar rule regarding avatars used on the board. Nobody can claim an avatar for themselves, but it is discouraged to use the same avatar as another role-player.

I agree with your sentiment that no two factions should be using the same ships, but role-playing isn't image based. I think it should be up to the Factory judge to advise the second image (and beyond) that it is a duplicate of the first, that there are duplicates out there and that they might want to use a different one.

But it should be advice. Not a rule.

And it won't have to be a rule. If the second person submitting the same image is aware that the image has been used before, I think you'll find that they will not want to use it.

Not to mention that it's hard enough to find an image at the best of times, let alone with the possible ones shrinking constantly.

And is there ever a point where a submission made in April last year, never been used, for a faction which doesn't exist, can be reused? If so, when?

Now, if the submitter actually owns the image, then the submitter could actually restrict if an image is used in another submission, right?

I'd also point out that if we made this a rule, it'd be a pain in the ass to have to comb through all the other submissions just to check that an image hasn't been re-used.

Goodness, if that was expected, I have not been doing my job. If I notice that the image has been used, I'll point it out, but I haven't been paying attention to that.

I figure the image is nice, but it's optional and ancillary to the rest of the submission. A good image alone doesn't a good submission make.
