Murder 101 : Alderaan University (Open)

Location Alderaan University.

It had been a very long time since she had taught a class. Now as she stood before the crowded room full of force users and non force users alike she began to question her own sanity at such an undertaking.

Behind her a curtain was down.

She took a breath.

"Good evening everyone. Welcome to Murder 101." She saw all those faces turn looking at her, hundreds of pairs of eyes whatever had brought them all to this class tonight. What were they expecting to see, or learn?

"Whatever your reason for being here Welcome. I am Rianna Ar'klim your teacher for this evening. This is an interactive class. You will be called upon, you will be asked to get out of your seats, you will be asked to help solve a murder."

Theatrics at her age? Why not.

"So let's start with the basics.............what is murder?" Rianna looked around waiting for the question to sink in.

ON the curtain an image flashed

The Iviin'yc had been delivering a cargo shipment to Alderaan when Mereel saw an advertisement for an event that sounded truly delightful: "Murder 101, hosted today by the Alderaan University. . . ."

After a minute of continuous laughter, Mereel had composed himself enough to put on some of his civilian clothes - an unassuming tan jacket with a white undershirt and brown slacks - hide his blaster pistol down his pants, and find an air taxi.

Thank the force event security had done an osik job of patting him down, otherwise he probably would have missed the seminar completely.

"So let's start with the basics.............what is murder?"

The woman presenting had said that this was going to be an interactive seminar, but he decided to wait to see where she was going with this.

Tavi has been doing a routine patrol on Alderaan when he had seen the advertisement for the event. For a second he reminisced about his days at the Academy for The Corsucant Security Force. Those were the good days....I wonder if I can still answer these questions. Tavi then made his way to the university, and sat down in the lecture hall. He had left his drones outside, thinking he wouldn't need them for this course. He straightened in his seat when the woman asked the question. Immediately to his mind came the def from his days at the academy.

To unlawfully take someone's life with premeditation.

Tavi almost raised his hand, but quickly brought it back down. He had the feeling he was wrong though, better to say nothing and see the outcome.

Well well it was interesting to see the myriad of emotions flickering across the faces in the audience. She could feel indecision spreading as they tossed about the question and yet waited to hear the answer.

"unlawful interesting word. Premeditated another interesting word. We can work with that. So now you have in your minds your definition. Bear mind though that your definition will change or be altered by where the murder is committed. What is murder on Alderaan, maybe mercy some where else."

She walked slowly towards her right looking out as they absorbed her words, " So now with this thought. How do you prove murder?" She looked out trying to pick one person one willing one...her eyes half closed as the force swept around the room finding the right candidate to talk..

"You...how would you, "she pointed to [member="Mereel Vaun"] - "go about proving murder?" She likely caught him off guard but she did warn them about it being interactive.

Not to worry she would get to [member="Tavi Riley"] soon enough. Another image flashed behind her.

Mereel had killed others before - and he most certainly considered himself a murderer. But he had never actually thought about how anyone would go about proving a murder was a murder before.

For a second, his mind drew a blank. He tried to remember every holodrama he had watched that was based on police officers, "I uh.. I guess I would first look to see if the cause of death was unnatural?"

Tavi listened as the man answered the reply, He took the time to look at the image. He immediately noticed the woman.Did someone want to kill her in that picture?...her cloths are white....her behind is pretty large.guy walking next to her...person walking towards her from in front of her..and...Why was there a dog driving that vehicle?

Tavi almost laughed at the absurd part of the image, he was so surprised at that and gave a small smile.....then he stopped an analyzed the image more. These images.... were they a test? Obviously everyone would notice the woman in all her white cloths...and bubbly butt....but was that just a distraction...and the dog was what needed to be caught?...What was he suppose to catch in the last image?

"I can accept that, check to see if it was not due to a natural cause." Rianna looked around as if forming her next question she could sense other questions but did not yet seek out who had them. The problem with classes was drawing others out.

Rianna turned looked at the picture it was one of the more common ones being shown around the galaxy. She chose ones specifically for a particular reason. "What do you look at first to make that determination?"

She had been on many investigation to discover murders, thieves, and numerous other things. But how do you teach that skill? Her gaze landed on [member="Tavi Riley"] , "How would you go about that?"

Tavi rubbed his jaw as he went into thought about the question, he then lifted his head and said nervously "How would I go about proving murder? Or if they died of unnatural causes? I'll answer both. First To determine if something is a murder, I would look at motive. Wat motives might be involved with the person's death, such as greed, jealousy, rage, etc. If you find any motive behind the death you pursue it."Tavi said as he rambled.

"Now unnatural causes or natural. You need to look at how absurd the death was. The placement of the body, and if there was any damage to it. If you don't see damage get a tox screen of what might be in the body, or a coroner to tell you the cause of death. They can most of the time rule out if it was natural or unnatural" Tavi said.

"What are you trying to dowith these pictures" Tavi asked curiously.

"How do you go about proving that the death was unnatural? And then if determined on natural what is your starting point. " She had to think now clearly Tavi wanted to challenge her a bit, good. She liked a challenge. "Don't worry about the pictures we'll get to them later."

Rianna walked slowly thinking, "Ok, let's think about what you are saying in answer to my questions. Let's start with determining a murder. You walk in a white room, that has a black bed, with a woman dressed in white laying peacefully upon the bed. There's no blood, there's no sign of foul play no damage to the doors, or windows. Everything is pristine and yet she is dead before her time. Where do you begin?"

Rianna looked to her audience. "Anyone?"

Another picture

Mereel spoke up before thinking, "Pois-

Err, I would have a coroner examine her to see if she had any medical conditions. Maybe she just died from something that runs in the family or alcoholism."

[member="Rianna Ar'klim-Organa"] [member="Tavi Riley"]

"The coroner says it will be 4 hours before they have an answer." She looked now mostly at [member="Mereel Vaun"] and [member="Tavi Riley"] since she had their attention. "Could there be anything in the room right now that you can start looking at? Something that supports what the coroner tells you or that you can question."

Rianna tilted her head, "The room is like the pictures you've been observing. So...do you want to look closer or wait for the coroner?"

She knew what answer she would give but this was not about her giving answers this was about prodding their interest, poking their abilities, and using the natural curiosity that many were born with but learned to curb as they grew older.

So...

Tavi rubbed his chin as he thought to himself. All the pictures had things that the viewer wouldn't notice on the first look. He caught a couple like the dog in the car, the old woman that looked like a young woman, and the cat in the rocks....but he was stumped. No blood, white room, black bed, woman dressed in white. I would check underneath the bed.

"Can you give us a hint? Also, what about looking underneath the bed?" Tavi asked scratching his head.

[member="Tavi Riley"] | [member="Mereel Vaun"]

She smiled at Tavi now he was thinking, "yes what about under the bed. When investigating a murder, or any crime really observation, thinking outside the box." She brought back up the second picture.

"Its all about what you see. Such as when you look at this picture of the woman, you probably noticed the woman first. The color of her clothing, she's front and center in the picture. But behind her in a place you don't expect there's a dog driving a car. In some places that would be common place but not in this environment. Once you see that dog, you begin to ask other questions...like why is the dog driving the car? Is there anyone else in the car? Every question gives you an aspect to investigating and as you answer the questions you slowly begin to solve the problem."

She flicked to the picture of the old woman/young girl, "Here this is about perception. If you look from one view you see the old woman, from another a young woman. Again when investigating your sense of perception will challenge you, you have to look from all the angles." She smiled see some of them lean forward now they were understanding.

Then the last picture. "See how well the cat blends in when you get close you see it from a distance it looks like rocks. Investigators need to get close don't view from a distance, don't let someone else drive your information. Look for yourselves." Rianna loved the look on their faces.

Teaching, she missed it.

"So...questions?"
