Do you mean simple visually, simple code-wise, or both?
My code thread and a link within it to my older stuff posted under a deleted character both have examples of some of my template work from the past 2+ years. Aside from the last post in my code thread, everything else I've done in the past 6 - 7 months is in the bios and posts of my characters, other people's characters, or what I
made specifically for the Dark Empire, as Ingrid above me has said.
If you still want something a little more unique, what I'm thinking right now for you is something with
broken glass faded into the background of the template to represent Matthias' fractured psyche, and building the red into other aspects of the template such as the border. I could play with colouring the lines red in whichever broken glass wallpaper I end up using, and see how that looks in the context of the template, also.
But red alone isn't enough to signify allegiance to the Dark Empire (DE), because red tends to just mean Sith/darksiders, and the Dark Empire isn't the only darkside faction on the board, so what I could do is include the Dark Empire symbol in the template in some fashion. Maybe something like what's seen in the upper right corner of the template in
this post? Just something small, floated into one of the corners.
Or you could leave the DE symbols to your avatar (DE has an avatar template for that - you can ask them to do a DE avatar for you in the #art-and-images channel in their server!) and username background, which you can find the picker for those in your
account details.
