My Thoughts About JSC

Disney's Princess
Feedback Requested:

So recently I've been pondering a few changes to my RP stuff and I wanted some feedback. Here's a few topics I kinda want your experience or thoughts about:

  • The Map Game is Boring: - It's been a few years now and I'm kinda over FvF. It's not even the drama. I just feel like I've done everything that can be done with it. Your thoughts?
  • I Post Too Often: - I get PMs all the time saying: Sorry I'm slow. ...What? No your not. You're fine. I'm just on everyday. Why are you apologizing? Go do IRL and tell me to Suck It. That is totally appropriate. It's not like I'm pressuring anybody. So... Maybe I should just slow down? One post every two days or something? Idk. Is fast posting bad now?
  • Stop Preaching Cali: - It's no surprise I take people aside often via PM and have long chats with them. Or how I create discussion threads with the aim to educate new writers and build a common culture. I'm American and talking with people is how I roll. Granted... I often run into cultural barriers that say, "Hey dude. Not cool. I'm here for fantasy. Not to learn, grow, share, or talk with you. Bug off." ...So. In your experience? Does reaching out help or hinder you most often? I'm worried that if I simply stop. I'll miss new opportunities to help people or create new collaborative experiences.
  • Characters are too OP (tech): - I came to SW to write Force Users. I played the video games and reached level 9000. That said, I hated The Force Unleashed. Starkiller and the Star Destroyer crash was dumb. But... All too often I enjoy sliding very close to being Starkiller. Especially with tech. A Jedi Master in Beskar and an Energy Belt is kinda strong. Even by Movie Canon standers yo. So... Too much? What is your favorite balance between being a mage and being a beskar tank.

I appreciate your thoughts and feedback on any topic. Post it here or in PM. But please note: Any post made in this thread will receive comment by other users. It's a Jay Thread after all. The Llamas are always lurking. :D

Tricky.

An element of self control is required.

There are Jedi-hunter type characters who bring lots of cool tech toys to the party.

Then you have some "mandalorians" who are really nothing but canon light side Jedi who happen to wear beskar.

You can bring everything overpowered to the party and STILL be a Force Master.

A very interesting topic in its own right. I write a Yuuzhan Vong, and I feel I can go toe to toe with many Jedi with her. But there is a lot of bad feeling on the board about Sith Masters overusing vong biotech.

Hmmmmm

As I sit at work, I mused in the off minutes... then snuck on to post when the boss was busy :D nah I am the boss at the moment.

Map – Fun when it engages the character or the muse. Always a challenge for FA to come up with a good arc or setup that encourages peoples creativity or engagement beyond just thinking of it as a map thread. Better to frame it as Story or Plot X or cool thread X

Speed – Let me reverse this - Do you also have many posts where nobody says anything about your speed, most likely right ;) all that matters is you are posting as often as you'd like, and they are too, in a hobby after all.

Preaching – I don't think you need to be hard on yourself for being yourself. Its not an unwelcome trait for many trying to help others :) Every time you share something or say something to another you are never certain of their response, mood, care etc, and that's fine, just life, we do our best. For my part I think you come across as helpful and a kind sort.

OP tech – Give and Take, any degree can work, if two writers want it to and find it fun.

^ This often gets harder the stronger or more developed your character gets, personal hard limits can help.

I love your preaching!

And so for OP. PUH-lease, Hauntruss is a century old dark jedi with sorcery powers. But, RP it with style and flavor and don't just lol stomp people - other RPers actually enjoy fighting with a powerful villain. It adds gravitas to their struggle.

In general don't be a jerk and people respond with enthusiasm. At least that's what I've experienced with Hauntruss.

The fact that you're usually sane is a plus. And even your OP characters are fun to read, even though I've had literally zero one-on-one threads with you.

Going too fast (in my opinion) is never bad. If you wanna post right away go right ahead. The other person/people will post when it best suits them, so you should do the same. Why should you slow yourself down?

As long as each of the items you have acquired were acquired through RP and legitimately, then that is just a plus for you (as long as you don't abuse your tech and roleplay it properly). If you go through the hard work of acquiring awesome tech, why should you not be able to use it in its entirety? However, I understand what you mean and it's exactly as [member="Jacen Voidstalker"] stated; it requires a degree of self control. It's really your call. If you're headed to a place that IC your character doesn't know will be dangerous but you OOCly know, you have to have some self control and be like "ok, he/she doesn't know it's dangerous, so I'm only gonna bring X, X, and X weaponry and tech".

This is also very true. The longer you have your character, just by the simple passage of time, your character will get stronger. Therefore, sometimes you need to OOCly impose limits on yourself to help make your character fresh and interesting. Maybe they get amnesia and have to put their life back together? Maybe they fall for someone in a directly opposing faction or belief? Maybe they suddenly wake up one day with their force powers gone and have to find out how and why? The list goes on and on. Sometimes you have to impose some restrictions and/or story arcs on your characters to intentionally nerf them so you can continue to have fun with them.

I've never had in-depth rp with any of your characters personally, but just the fact that you took the time to address these topics that you viewed may be issues shows me that you know what you can do to improve and how to handle yourself.

Anyway, that's just my two cents on the matter. :D

Thanks everybody. This gives me some really good feedback on how I can improve myself as a community member and as a hobby writer. I really appreciate it. :D

This is a problem I had to tackle years ago with writing Shards. They are, by nature, more durable than the average squishy organic. You can punch Eralam in the face all day long and all he's going to do is laugh while the bones in your hands splinter into dust.

The trick I've used to achieve balance is to find a couple of areas to excel in and suck in everything else.

Eralam is a Master level Force user and experienced duelist, and he's got a metal body to boot.

So how do you balance that out? For starters, while he's talented with TK and Absorb, he has no aptitude with any other branches of Force use. His mind doesn't work like that of a human or any other organic with a brain, which makes it all but impossible to glean so much as a surface impression from the minds of the squishies. That rules out any sort of mental influence on others. He's not going to make plants grow suddenly, or make beasts attack. His perceptions of the world are so alien that any illusion he'd try to cast would be an utter failure. He doesn't get to use Force Speed, and he can't heal himself mid fight without a welding torch or duct tape.

Furthermore, his equipment is antiquated. The pistol he uses is basically my IRL sidearm: a Colt 1851 Navy replica that's been cartridge converted to .45 Long Colt. It only hold 5 bullets and takes forever to reload. It's single action, which means any sort of rapid fire involves both hands. He doesn't have any personal shields or alchemized equipment either. His body might be made of metal, but it's durasteel, not beskar or phrik or anything like that. If someone does manage to get inside his guard with a lightsaber, they can slice and dice and make curly fries out of his ass.

In short, whatever advantages he might have are balanced out to the point that a half decent duelist can get around them with ease. After that, it's up to the skill of the writers to figure out who comes out on top.

For an organic, the approach might be different, but the principle remains the same. If you have a character that's immensely strong in every area and wears indestructible armor, it's no fun for anyone. A well written duel is as much a dance as it is a fight, and while you want to do everything you can to set the pace, if all you're doing is stepping on your partner's toes, it's ugly and painful for all involved.

Hope that helps, or at least wasn't too incoherent.

Although you have never been the same since getting rid of Tinker. And now Karen?

But seriously, your ideas and opinions are worth the read even if one does not agree with you. But always makes us all think.

As for RPing? I always have fun with you. But I would LOVE to see more deeper stuff from you, I know it is there! but that is me, I like the emo stuff. :p

I would just say .. don't change a thing! And anyone that gets up the nose of Nana, if fine with me!

My thoughts about JSC are not suitable for a PG-13 site. :p

But seriously, you ask the hard questions, even if no one wants them asked or answered. I find you in equal times amusing and irritating because I can never tell if you're trying to be a serious social warrior or a truly troublesome troll.

You're a good writer in the RP though.

What do I think of you? There are many things to say.... But, since i've been told expletives are discouraged here, I will merely say I think you're a fun writer and a cool person. You've given me advice, directly or indirectly, on a lot of things, and helped me improve my writing. You're also helping with the arduous task of being my sounding board as I learn to RP something other than a Mando NFU in a Star Wars setting. For that, you deserve a scotch and steak or something.

Honestly? You do a lot of good stuff, both IC and OOC. Even when it does irritate me :p
