Name: Mystra's Echo
Planet: Tygara, a remote world at the edge of Silver Jedi Order space, controlled by the Tygaran Alliance minor faction.
Nexus Alignment: Dark
Nexus Effects: Those who enter the nexus may hear voices, experience a feeling of intense cold or paranoia and suspicion, which grows stronger the longer they linger. At the same time, darksiders will find their connection to the Dark Side strengthened, without making them god-like, whilst lightsiders feel their powers wane and resolve tested. Though Mystra has perished, the voice of the wrathful queen still echoes.
Size: Region. The Nexus' epicentre lies in an ancient wide, chamber beneath the mountain in the Underealm, but it stretches beyond that, engulfing miles of catacombs and tunnels tainted by the Dark Side energies this realm is saturated by. There is no quick-fix solution to permanently cleanse Mystra's Echo. Should Light Side Masters purify it, the nexus will eventually regain its former status as a hive of darkness. However, It would be possible to purify it in the same way Arca Jeth purified the planet Ambria.
Development Threads: Twilight of the Goddess (112 posts). Tygaran Alliance forces assault the heavily defended Underealm, eventually engaging Mystra in a final battle to the death after she's awakened by her followers and wreaks havoc.
Description: The Underealm is a cold, subterranean realm far in the north of Tygara. It has been the home of the Xioquo, this planet's dark elves, for millennia and the site of their capital, Tlalixque. Specifically Mystra's Echo is concentrated in an ancient chamber that used to serve as part of the foundry and mustering hall of the Xioquo. Beyond the immediate chamber, it encompasses various catacombs and tunnels around it.
Before the Twilight of Mystra, these were used by the Xioquo army and clergy. Slaves laboured and toiled in the Foundry to forge weapons and war machines, and were harshly punished for even the slightest infraction, being branded, fed to wild animals or sacrificed to the Xioquo's goddess. Soldiers who were seen as weak suffered a similar fate. Some got their essence torn out to fuel primitive war machines that were constructed by the aforementioned slaves. The Foundry has been in disuse since the final battle, though pieces of machinery, dried blood and, of course, a general feeling of oppression remain.
The chamber where Mystra made her last stand has the strongest concentration of malevolent energies. Nothing remains of her body, which exploded during the climax of the battle as darkside Masters tend to. The force of the explosion was such that it toppled pillars and dropped part of the roof. The feeling of the Dark Side is thick in the room. It hangs in roiling fogs close to where Mystra once stood.
Origins/History:
The creation of Mystra's Echo was a long time coming, though the Tygaran Alliance's assault on the Underealm and Mystra's last stand provided the immediate catalyst. The Xioquo, a race reminiscent of the drows of various legends and fairy tales, had made the Underealm their home for millennia. In the absence of their Queen Mystra, who was kept in stasis in her tomb until the right moment for her to awaken and lead her people to subjugate all of Tygara, the Xioquo's scheming matriarchs ruled as an unstable oligarchy characterised by internecine strife.
Their society was built on a strict hierarchy, religion and slavery. Strong in the Dark Side, the Xioquo were parallel to the ancient Sith species, equally reviled and feared by their fellow natives, the Qadiri and the Vashyada. Mystra, believed by her people to be the Xioquo's creator, was equally venerated and feared. While some hoped that she would lead the race to glory, others believed her return would be far more ominous, for she would also judge her people...and purge those she considered unworthy.
As it turned out, the sceptics were right. Nemesis came to the Underealm when the Tygaran Alliance deployed a combined army of Firemane soldiers, Eldorai and Qadiri to end the threat posed by the Xioquo after a series of slave raids and skirmishes had been repulsed. The Xioquo matriarchs united and threw all they had against the invaders: Alchemical monstrosities, Force-using elite troops, child soldiers...but all to no avail.
In desperation, most of the matriarchs decided to awaken Mystra from her slumber, sacrificing thousands of slaves so that she could feed on them. Two aristocrats, Qual'Zyanya and her sister Qual'Ixtar, tried to prevent the conclusion of the ritual by using a bomb to blow up the cabal.
Alas...this ended up giving Mystra the boost she needed. Unfortunately for the Xioquo, as it turned out Mystra was not a benign goddess and began to feed on those of her people she considered unworthy of her, ordering them to fight to the death, even if it meant the doom of their race.
After vicious fighting, during which many Xioquo warriors surrendered instead of fight a futile battle, Mystra was confronted in a chamber in the north of the Underealm by Siobhan Kerrigan, [member="Abaigeal E'ron"], [member="Elincia Alanis"], [member="Tempest"], Kaida Taldir and a contingent of Angelii. A fierce battle ensued, during which Siobhan and Mystra hurled insults and hideous dark side power at one another, while E'ron drew upon the Light and Tempest and the Eldorai warriors unleashed elemental powers. Most of the chamber was wrecked during the course of the battle.
Mystra drew upon her strength in the dark side and her skills as an illusionist to fight her adversaries. The the struggle made the very chamber shake and tremble. But eventually she was bested and her body was torn apart. The only thing that remained of where she had made her last stand was a powerful feeling of the Dark Side, her echo. By the time the Dark Queen perished, three days of fighting between Alliance forces and Xioquo had produced staggering casualties.
Efforts have been made to cleanse the nexus, but these were haphazard and unsuccessful. For one, there were few Light Side Masters in the Tygaran Alliance and both Firemane and the Eldorai were unwilling to enlist outside Jedi. On average, Eldorai Force-users are grey in alignment, whilst most of Firemane's Masters are Dark Jedi.
Mindful of the danger that it could become a centre of pilgrimage for die-hard Mystra zealots amongst the Xioquo, Mystra's Echo was placed under lockdown by the Angelii and the Order of Fire, Firemane's Force-using arm. Droids and Kar'zun are Firemane's preferred watchmen since the stone people are fairly unexcitable and extremely resistant to mental influences.
Today, as the Xioquo seek to rebuild and move on, it remains a constant reminder of the old days. In time, guardianship will probably be returned to them. Bizarrely, the nexus has attracted some Xioquo who travel there to venerate Siobhan Kerrigan, seeing her as 'The Destroyer' who vanquished the tyrant Mystra, which has led to some awkward situations. Kerrigan occasionally visits the nexus, considering it her personal domain by right of conquest. This may not be a good idea.
