Hey guys, I need help to develop a few different type of shields (starship) for the First Order. This will become important very, very soon - for the future of the First Imperial Navy!

What type of ships will these shields be used for? Size of the ship is always a dependent variable of shield size and efficiency due to power and space requirements. Fighter shields would need to be small and can deflect up to blaster fire and other starfighter weaponry, while corvette and up have shields that can deflect capital-grade turbolasers.

There's also the issue of which type of shield, ray or particle; Ray can deflect energy like turbolasers, while Particle can deflect projectiles and space debris. Many large capital ships like star destroyers have a mix of both (Though Empire at War has taught me that Star Destroyers can't do kriff against proton torpedoes, this was later rectified in a Forces of Corruption modification called Thrawn's Revenge: Imperial Civil War.) which gave them protection from almost all of the conventional means of warfare.

Welcome to my powerhouse.

1. Mix of a both
2. Array
3. Shield systems being adapted to in this case a Heavy Frigate -

'Standard' shields always include a mix of both (the story of why there's two types is a hilarious journey down the strange road of Star Wars canon, fanon, and the staggering amount of effort people will go through to make two contradictory things written by two different people work together).

The Mando's are fond of using 'Retribution' shields, which are nominally weaker than regular Ray Shielding but can reflect fire back onto the target.

For whatever reason, I envision the First Order as cultivating an aura of invincibility. When it comes to shields, the best direction in that regard might be a fleet-wide system that allows for transferring power to and from ships. It would be something a little different, to give our entire Naval doctrine some character or color.

In Star Trek we call that 'shield transfer,' and it's an ability unique to skilled Engineering Officers who can target an ally vessel to heal their shields up, so that'll be something we can work on but I believe that comes down to the officer behind the console and not necessarily a ship ability.

  • Covariance - 10% Higher Maximum Capacity, 25% Slower Regeneration
  • Regenerative - 25% Faster Regeneration, 10% Lower Maximum Capacity
  • Resilient - 5% Lower Capacity and Regeneration, allows for 5% absorption and 5% bleed through, as opposed to 10% normal bleedthrough.
  • Standard - Are balanced of all the above.
  • Redundant - Uses a secondary shield generator, secondary acts to protect the ship when primary has failed and are generally weaker than primary shields.
Right now at least two First Order ships that I've created have Redundant Shields, I'm looking at developing Covariance, Regenerative and Resilient shields for Star Wars and more directly for the First Order. I'll be creating a new NPC for this purpose, but if you would *both* like to participate let me know and I'll get a thread rolling for it once Quintas is over. :)
