Intent: A naturally sourced equivalent of this/this and this.
Development Thread: None
Manufacturer: Clan Rekali
Model: Neebray Wingleather™
Affiliation: Clan Rekali, select customers
Modularity: No
Production: Mass-Produced
Material: The skin/organs of the giant spacefaring Neebray, with a proprietary chemical treatment.
Description: Imagine leather approximately 0.25m thick, taken from capital-ship-scale creatures that can somehow swim through space (such as Neebray, Oswaft, and so forth). The concept behind Neebray Wingleather operates on the assumption that such creatures are interacting with hidden energies in a way comparable to a Punworcca yacht's 'solar' sail, as both involve physical unfurling motion and are otherwise comparable. Using a proprietary chemical formulation, and extensive familiarity with the Neebrays of the Hard Roil, Clan Rekali has managed to preserve the properties of living Neebray hide in a leather form. When physically unfurled and subjected to the correct levels of electric current, the Wingleather becomes comparable to a Punworcca-type 'solar' sail, interacting with 'mysterious undetectable energies' rather than solar radiation. Directional thrust is created from interaction with ambient energies. Clan Rekali believes this particular energy to be quintessence, an ambient and benign form of dark energy.
In the end, though, it doesn't much matter what kind of dark energy it uses; properly treated Neebray leather flies like Neebrays.
Neebray Wingleather allows Clan Rekali to build spaceborne, high-velocity sailing ships in an attempt to appeal to luxury buyers and the Witches of Dathomir.
(+) No drive glow or emissions.
(+) Non-metallic; does not show up on magnetic sensors.
(+) No need for fuel, apart from whatever is used to provide the live current that activates the Wingleather.
(-) The larger the sails, the more vulnerable they are to impact or weapons fire, far more vulnerable than conventional engines.
(-) Neebrays are stately critters, and though a Punworcca can hit 1,000 gravities of acceleration, Neebray Wingleather is less efficient; it doesn't make for the quickest or most agile of ships. Greater speed requires larger sail-area-to-mass ratios. See previous weakness.
