Private New in Town

The Temple's dining facility was just as grand and minimalistic as he had envisioned it. Long rows of gleaming white tables lined the wide-open space, with several maintenance droids cleaning them as the Jedi ate and left. He spotted the serving line at the far end of the room, where the kitchen droids overlooked nearly a hundred different dishes. Like almost all facilities the temple had to offer, the dining area was almost always open, due to the varying internal clocks of the many different species housing in the Jedi Temple. Some were nocturnal, and other Jedi had just returned from worlds with vastly different year cycles and timezones.

And Gillan happened to be one of those Jedi.

It was roughly late afternoon on Kashyyyk. But here, on Coruscant? Still not dawn. Perhaps that was why he hadn't been able to sleep. And coincidentally also why he craved dinner, which he found a valid reason to raid the dining facility this early in the morning.

As expected from the core, the majority of Jedi he had seen were human. He suspected that the dining area would be sprawling with people during the day, but not before dawn. He was grateful for it, considering that the dining area was almost empty. Gillan was able to just grab a tray, and walk right up to whatever dish he wanted - a luxury he didn't expect to have a month or so from now. Assuming you stay. He thought, his mind wandering as he piled his tray with blue milk pancakes. Despite the more or less warm welcome he had received, the Padawan still didn't feel comfortable or at home. And that gnawed at him.

Perhaps what he needed, were his friends. Or new friends, really. Some acquaintances to talk, spar and meditate with. Although making friends was never that easy. He couldn't just walk up to someone with a beaming smile, introduce himself and stick around... Or could he?

Hiis gaze shifted through the dining area, until his eyes locked on another lone figure. His age more or less, or so he hoped. Taking a deep breath, Gillan made his approach with a confident stride and slight smile.

"Hey. Do you mind if I sit down here?"

It had been a long night. Kinhaes had tried to simply meditate to get some peace to her thoughts in order to sleep. Yet, her mind and body felt too energized. Too restless. And so, she had gone out to a large empty space that Padawans and Knights went to practice their saber work. The glow of yellow blades flashed around in multiple circles and strikes at the air around her. It was very much a Form 3 style of movement with two reverse gripped Lightsabers. It was unknown how many hours she trained. 4, maybe 5 hours of yellow being the only light around her, the amber eyes that reflected the glow of her precious tools of the Order closed in focus.

Eventually, her hungry body dragged her to the large Canteen that she frequented. She had simply grabbed a light plate of blue milk pancakes and some Bantha mince. Not the most normal of meals, but it had what she needed. A source of energy to keep her going till the next morning. Her mind wandered again to what her mind was too focused on prior and during her training under the moonlight.

She was under a piece of building, half blown up from a rogue shell during a surprise attack. She watched as a saber of green and multiple reds flashed before her eyes less than twenty paces from where she was. It lasted for minute, before the red sabers found their mark. The older man's body crumpled as the green light dissipated. The reds and their wielders laughed, disappearing from sight soon after. The small Zabrak, eleven years old lay there, silently shaking with tears rolling down her face.

She was snapped out of this memory by a voice from a young sounding man beside her. Turning to face the person who asked her a question, Kinhaes gave the boy a quick look before giving a half smile, simply directing him with her head to the seat beside her. He didn't look like someone from the temple here. There was something foreign, yet recognizable about his attire and energy. Who was this? "You new here?" Kinhaes asked, poking her mince with her spoon.

He nodded. "Yeah. I'm from the Concord. This is my first day here." He glanced at one of the chrono's that hung in the dining area. "Second actually." He corrected himself. The young Jedi hadn't really slept yet, which was why it all felt like a single day to him. "Anyways, my name is Gillan. Nice to meet you." His attention was drawn back to his plate by the scent of the blue milk pancakes. One thing was certain; the ones on his plate weren't going to last long

With his mouth stuffed full of the blue delicacy, Gillan spoke up again. "Not to pry or anything, but why are you here at this hour?" She seemed his age, maybe a little older. That likely meant that she was still a Padawan, just like him. As for reasons why they would be up this early morning, well he could only think of a handful. He remembered how few Padawans, including himself, were out this early in the morning. Some enjoyed to watch the interviews to watch the podraces or some extreme starship races like the Dragon Void Run, which usually aired at night. Gillan, however, simply believed that his time was better spent studying. Of course, that was an excuse to hide the truth. His dreams often plagued him with unpleasant snippets of the present and the future, which made sleeping a real gamble. No, he much preferred to stay awake. With the aid of the Force, if he absolutely had to. "I mean, it's not like any classes start this early, right?"

Having poked the mixture of meat on her plate, Kinhaes listened to Gillan. Hearing that he was from the Silver Concord brought her mind to the fact that she rarely saw any belonging to that Jedi Order division. Looking to the other Gillan had spotted from his own Order, Kinhaes lowered her spoon. She had gotten rather interested in this new person. The question about her nightly activity and its reason snapped her attention to Gillan. She slowly turned to face him, her neck turning to let her look at him. Did she want to tell someone the truth. She had kept it hidden why she was so driven to train and improve. Should she tell him? "No. Not yet," Kinhaes thought, the polite expression remaining as firm as ever.

"Mostly training. Couldn't sleep,"
She answered, taking a small bite of her food before swallowing and continuing, "And meditating didn't help either. Just wanted something to do." She could feel her free hand on her lap slightly clench and shake as she thought of her master, his lessons, how kind and determined he was to her training. It was a hard topic, but talking could help.

"And, no. There are no classes at this hour. They start a in a few hours from now. A couple after dawn," Kinhaes said, remembering that she had a free day today from hard training. She was instructed to try to meditate more today, to help clear her mind for later lessons and training sessions. "I'm free for a while, so I'll probably continue to train for a bit longer," Her voice was half forced and half tired. It was like she was trying to keep her mind active, and herself awake. The small darkened red patches under her eyes were hard to see, until a passing Jedi's try reflected light at her face. The bags from lack of sleep practically shone before blending impossibly well with her red skin. "You? Trip here tough I bet," she asked, shortly afterwards mixing a pancake bite with some meat.

Training. When was the last time his training sessions had lasted until sunrise? Had they ever? Sure, he had pulled many all-nighters in the libraries of Kashyyyk and Ossus reading whatever the archives had to offer, but physical training? That was new to him. "Meditation didn't help either huh." The older Jedi he knew applied it as some sort of 'fix all' method. It was good to know that he apparently wasn't the only one who sometimes had trouble meditating.

He nodded along with what she said, until the subject of their conversation shifted to his journey. "It was quite an undertaking, yeah." The long-distance shuttle that had brought him from Kashyyyk to Coruscant had been much smaller than he had anticipated. In the five days that their hyperspace travel had lasted, Gillan had found that there evading the Selkath pilot was nigh-impossible. The only moment of solitude he had received, was during their brief stop on Tirahn. "The timezones really do a number on you. Normally I'd be having dinner by now." He gestured at his plate with blue milk pancakes, which he ate at an alarming rate. "But since you're free, would you like to uhh.." He gathered his courage. Doing stuff with people you barely knew was always a bit awkward. "Maybe do some joint-training?"

Having spent a good amount of her last few months alone at the temple, it was nice to talk with someone. It gave her a sense of connection with more than her duties and job as a Jedi. Hearing that Gillan would have had dinner at this point gave Kinhaes both a feeling of sympathy and humor. "Well, then try to make up for it," Kinhaes said, pointing her spoon at Gillan's plate, "This place hardly closes down anyways." It felt right to talk to someone. Especially someone around her own age. She'd only have the Younglings and mentors to talk to usually, and it was always one of two thing spoken about. It was either a question on the future by a Youngling, or about how much she still needs to learn to be a true Jedi Knight one day. It honestly drove her insane half the time and like she wasn't progressing at all the rest.

Gillan's offer of joint training, Kinhaes perked up a bit. "Yeah. I'd like that," She said, her voice more vibrant than before. "How about you get settled in first. Be a shame to train when you just got here," the Padawan pointed out, her smile happy, yet caring. It was like her old master's when she was a Youngling. She honestly got more from his than he realized. "Shall we say, in a few days time. I know a place that's always vacant. I go there with a couple Training Drones," She remembered not long ago using those drones. Usually four at once. Using the force to sense her surroundings had come a long way since she started with the small orb like droids.
