I'm actually from the Big Easy lol Here's some neat places to go visit if you have the time.
Obviously you're gonna wanna go to the French Quarter. Lots of shopping there and neat stuff on sale. Everything from T-shirts and sandals to cultural items and food. If you can, try some gator meat from one of the vendors there. It's amazing lol
Café du Monde is a must. Get some coffee and some Beignets. Everything is good there. Everything. It's on Decatur street in the French Quarter, so it's a one stop shop for shopping and food
Also, the Audubon Zoo is a pretty neat place to go and if you're into history type stuff, hit up one of the many museums like the New Orleans Mint, the WWII National Memorial, and there's a couple of art museums as well. There's also the Saint Louis Catholic Cathedral which is actually pretty cool to go and visit.
Pretty much everything in New Orleans is really cool and neat to see, but I gotta warn you: stay in the touristy areas. People are super nice down there, but like any big city, don't go wandering off.
Also, if you see a guy sitting at a chess table in the city with a sign saying he'll play a game of chess with you for ~$10-20 (that's what it roughly was last time I was there), he'll beat you. Hands down. It's a lot of fun to try, though. He's a flipping genius at the game.
Oh, and ride the ferry at high tide if you can. If you don't, you'll see why that's a bit important >.>
