New to role playing but eager to get started

Hey all!
Like the title says, I've not done much role play before but I'd like to give it a go and try and get some creativity going. I'm a little overwhelmed by this site though so I have a couple of questions after browsing through various rules and topics etc. If my character is completely new how can I get an avatar/profile picture to accurately represent them when my art capability extends only to stick figures? Is the timeline something completely fresh or is it set in the old Legends continuity? And most importantly, where should I start? I'd like to be part of a new(ish) adventure with a friendly group and I'm not confident enough to barge into some random person's story right away.

To answer a few questions...

Most of us surf the net for good picks and use them noting origin source. You can also request some make you one in the art section.

Q2 covered above

Where to start is to flesh out your first character. Use the tenplate in the getting started section. Next is to find some writers with compatible characters. If your a light to netural character I'll happily thread with ya at first and adventure so you can get your feet wet. Other wise when your character is set post I. The LFG areas and see who responds.
