"Newbie" training

The Jedi Path said that a Youngling would meditate at least five times every day, having classes in the morning and Force and physical in the afternoon. They would work on the basics of swordplay via Shii-Cho and perform simple tasks like levitating small objects.

As we saw in Episode II, younglings were taught the basics of the Force, lightsaber training and the essential facts of being a Jedi. Without needing to delve into the Legends material, the understanding is that younglings are shown only the beginning of what they will need to prove they can be accepted as future Jedi Knights.

In a way, it's to thin out the crowd. Those who are weaker in the Force, who lack the discipline or are just unsure if they want to be a Jedi will eventually be shown a different path instead of the route of the Jedi.

Seeing that this takes place from the time that a youngling begins their classes to the point where they are accepted as a padawan, it's extremely important work, for this is the future of the Jedi Order and is why Yoda is involved in it heavily as a teacher.
