Nikola Tesla - Muh hero

Is it a fact or a myth that he made an Earthquake machine that took down a bridge? I'm going to take a guess and say it was a myth
It is most likely based off of something that happened. The only evidence of the story comes from a newspaper report. No bridge was taken down, yet supposedly Tesla's device could match and amplify the resonance frequency of steel and cause a half-erected building to vibrate. This is possible, considering that a sufficiently powerful subwoofer driver can make an entire house shake if placed in the right spot. However, the claim that it was a pocket-sized steam-powered device seems dubious.

My son loved him so much that he fought against the teacher on the list of famous American who they could write a report on & portray. Of course Tesla was not on the list & the teacher had no idea who he was--but my son won out and did his report on Tesla.

He hates Edison now though, with a passion.

Mythbusters did a show about the earthquake machine. They found the basic concept was possible, but his design could not have done what it said it had. It would need to be a huge thing the size of a car and a lot more complex.

He was a genius without doubt. And him giving up his patents for AC electricity was something we all owe him a debt of gratitude for. If only there were more people who would put society before themselves.

The teacher had no idea who Tesla was?Seriously? I know to be fair not many American textbooks mention him in the primary education system here but I would assume the teacher would have Googled "Famous Historical Americans" to generate a base list. If I was a teacher I would get tired pretty quickly reading all the similar reports on the handful of people most automatically think of.

I actually did a quick Google search of "Famous Historical Americans." The first result listed 100. Nikola Tesla was not listed. Edison was in the top ten, though.

Fact is, Tesla was forgotten by most Americans outside of the field of geekdom that he inhabited.
