OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Unit Name: Nikto Heavy Weapons Infantry
  • Affiliation: Silver Jedi Order
  • Classification: Heavy weapons infantry
  • Description: The Nikto Heavy Weapons Infantry is used to provide specialized fire support to the Order's armies against a variety of threats: armored vehicles, aircraft, infantry, and attacks requiring indirect fire to carry out.
COMBAT INFORMATION:
Strengths:
  • Heavy firepower: mortars pack a heavy punch
  • Ability to defend against a variety threats once the weapons are set up
Weaknesses:
  • Deployment time: heavy weapons require significant time for deployment, during which time they are vulnerable to a variety of enemy units such as line infantry, snipers, ground-attack aircraft
  • Limited ammunition: Especially apparent with missile troopers and mortar teams, they are vulnerable in prolonged engagements when their finite amount of heavy ammunition makes them vulnerable when exhausted
  • Limited tactical mobility: The sheer weight of the equipment can make movement of heavy weapons units much more difficult on the battlefield
  • Vulnerable on the move: while in movement, a heavy weapons unit is worth even less than a line infantry unit (e.g. stormtroopers)
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Since the Ord Radama campaign, which was the defining moment of Silver Jedi heavy weapons doctrine, the Order has been able to use a combination of machineguns, man-portable missile launchers and mortars for infantry fire support of various kinds. It was decided, after the invasion of Kintan, to form a special unit of Nikto heavy weapons infantry. A typical platoon of Nikto heavy weapons infantry will comprise four mortars, each crewed by 3 people, twelve Gurgurant missile launchers (which can also fire unguided ammunition), and six heavy machineguns, each crewed by 2 people, for a total of 36 gunners. It became obvious on Nadiem that fighting the Bryn'adul required adjustments to the equipment fielded, so that, rather than to use directed-energy weapons, the Niktos would thus use kinetic projectiles, but they were also trained in the use of guided weapons for fighting other enemies. They were also issued power armor to help with the encumbrance of their weapons.

Of course, there are drawbacks to using heavy weapons: as seen in the Ord Radama campaign, heavy weapons require significant time for deployment, during which time they are vulnerable to a variety of enemy units such as line infantry, snipers, ground-attack aircraft. Also said heavy weapons carry limited ammunition: it becomes a liability that is especially apparent with missile troopers and mortar teams, they are vulnerable in prolonged engagements when their finite amount of heavy ammunition makes them vulnerable when exhausted. Finally it makes movement much more limited and not only because it is slower: while on the move it is vulnerable to a variety of other units. For these reasons, Silver Jedi operational protocol requires that a heavy weapons platoon be supported by at least one squad of line infantry to address the vulnerabilities of the platoon while in movement.
