CAPITAL AND URBAN LOCATION DESCRIPTIONS |
Dewhurst |
Nestled within the Blue River Run and acting as a pseudo gateway to the Nirine Hinterlands beyond - the idyllic village of Dewhurst claims the title of Capital City purely on two reasons alone. It is, arguably, the largest settlement present on the planet, housing at any given time an estimated population between 25,000 and 30,000 individuals. In turn, it also retains control and access to one of only two Space Ports on the planet - the other remaining in the hands of the Halcyon Corporation within Dawnbreak Haven. Dewhurst maintains a relative peace within its immediate vicinity - allowing all neighboring communities access to the Space Port, for a minor fee, so they can more easily ship their products off-planet. It also boasts one of the largest volunteer-militias, though they're poorly trained and equipped; the militia is still capable of maintaining the peace through sheer numbers of personnel, alone. |
Erstonia |
The second largest village on Nirine at 5,000 residents - Erstonia sits quietly along the western edge of the Cordale Expanse and acts as a de facto meeting location for many of the smaller communities. Often, these smaller communities resolve their issues by deferring judgement to a tribunal of elders that reside in Erstonia - serving as a local government, and at times providing a rival to Dewhurst. Erstonia is well known for its large Nerf and Sheep herds as well as the quality of woven textiles that the populace produces. Though content with their quiet lifestyle, the people of Erstonia are slowly pushing for a larger connection between the communities, hoping that by uniting their smaller agrarian neighbors beneath the Erstonia sigil, they might challenge Dewhurst for designation as the planet's Capital - though this is unlikely to happen. |
Halcyon Corporation Outpost Dawnbreak Haven |
Constructed atop one of the few mountainous regions of Nirine, beneath the twisted and gnarled roots of an ancient Wroshyr Tree, and overlooking the valley below is the Dawnbreak Haven. This facility - with contains a garrison, space port, market, and a number of other amenities - is the sole presence that the Halcyon Corporation maintains on Nirine as a means to extend and establish their claim on one of their neighboring planets. Their exact reason for establishing the outpost remains unknown - as many of the unexploited resources present on Nirine are likewise present on a number of other planets and moons in the system. The most likely story and reason for the Halcyon Corporation establishing the outpost, was to secure a readily available and reliable source of foodstuffs for the hungry masses of Khrea. However, that doesn't really explain the reason that the facility is as heavily guarded as it is - or, why it maintains no fewer than two gunships on site at all times. |
Mossy Hamlet |
A quiet collection of Farmsteads and Family Homes make up the small, though spread-out, community locally known as the Mossy Hamlet. Very little often draws individuals to the hamlet, save for travelers returning home from the larger communities that need a stopping point for the night - or those that are seeking their potential fortunes further away into the untamed wilderness beyond. What little industry that is present, and its few and far between, are local sawmills and a smith or two, which serve the immediate community. Beyond a modest living in trading in lumbers, and a few surface ore veins, there is nothing otherwise remarkable about the Mossy Hamlet outside of its secluded location and peaceful atmosphere. |
Oak Shire Fields |
Of the many communities and homesteads that dot the expanse of land between larger more 'civilized' towns, Oak Shire is one such community that is treated more like a personal fiefdom than a community. The land is kept under the tight fist of a Hutt simply called 'The Old Oak', who uses a force of Wookiees and a few Niktos to keep the workers in line and to protect its investment. For the most part, Oak Shire is a semi-profitable venture, its crops and foodstuffs providing enough to keep The Old Oak in relative luxury - though not nearly as luxurious as Hutts in Hutt Space - it is enough given the circumstances and seclusion of the Shiraya Expanse. Of course, as with most things, rumors abound about Oak Shire, The Old Oak, and how the Hutt is running a secret criminal empire, or how the Hutt had ended up on Nirine solely because it was fleeing from the Hutt Clans for some slight or betrayal rumored to have occurred. |
Blue Pond Acres |
Blue Acre Ponds isn't a township or village as much as it is a singular farmstead spread out across a couple hundred acres of land - with various outbuildings, workers housing, and processing buildings. Blue Acre Ponds serves as the sole grower and harvester of Krill on Nirine, which are, in turn, used to create the drink Spotchka. During their life cycle, the Krill are also used to assist in the fertilizing and pest control of the many rice paddies, with rice being a tertiary product behind Krill and Spotchka. Due to Blue Acre Ponds being the old producer of Krill and Spotchka, it is also heavily guarded, more so than most farmsteads - with many of the credits earned being used to procure some of the highest quality equipment, arms, and training for their guards. In more recent months, the owners of Blue Acre Ponds have even reached out to the Halcyon Corporation, seeking additional assistance in protecting their lucrative Spotchka manufacturing. |
Ye Olde Bait & Tackle Tavern + Inn |
A well known watering hole of sorts, the structure itself sits on a series of stills to keep it just above the waterline of the shallow lagoon that it resides within - protected further via a series of sandbanks, reefs, and tidal flows that keep larger waves away - even during adverse weather. The only means of accessing Ye Olde Bait & Tackle is via boat, or, as is the case with some of the more aquatically aligned species, swimming; though it is expected that one dries themselves off before entering. Its main draw is the drinks that are available, ranging from Spotchka imported from Blue Acre Ponds, to drinks that are consider specialties by their aquatic patrons - such as the Mon Cala and Chadra-Fan. Its Inn portion, which sits above the main tavern, houses a few rooms, mainly used for those too drunk to get home safely; while also having a few "rooms" in the stilts beneath the structure for those that prefer to sleep in the warm, fish filled waters that fill the lagoon. |
Hilltop of the Whills |
At a time prior to the arrival of the Confederate Remnants, perhaps in a previous attempt at locating the colonizing the Shiraya Expanse, a group of individuals known as the Whills arrived. This Force worshipping sect - separated into the Disciples who sought to listen and try to understand the force, and the Guardians who preferred to sense the force and its presence - took up residence in, what had become by that time, an old hilltop fortification that had since fallen into disuse and ruin. Over the years, they took the time to rebuild the fortification and erect additional protective measures where they could - while also establishing a handful of large communal houses and smaller support buildings within the fortification. The presence of the Whills, specifically the Guardians, provided a sense of stability and support for the neighboring communities. Over time, these communities sought the assistance and guidance of the Whills in all matters, from simple mundane problems, to providing mediators to prevent the communities from coming into conflict with one another. In many ways, the Whills had become much like the Jedi Order of old, keeping the peace between the settlements whilst not directly involving themselves in larger conflicts. |

MAJOR PLANETARY LOCATION DESCRIPTIONS |
Bedview Woodlands |
A pristine countryside of sparse trees that slowly open up to larger shrublands and ponds - much of Bedview is untouched, save for a few communities or homesteads at the very edge of the woods. These local communities, as is usually common, have developed their own stories and tales of Bedview, though this is often done more so to keep children safe and prevent them from wandering into the woods and getting lost. Many of those that call the surrounding area home are known to raise the sturdy and hardy Roba; some of these beasts are even trained to sniff out mushrooms and native flora that grow at the bases of the trees that populate the region. |
Whaladon Island |
One of the more unique "geographical" locations present on Nirine is that of an island that appears to move among the waves. In reality, this island, is a dense growth of mangroves, dead coral reefs, barnacles, salt, and silt build up that has formed on the back of a colossal Whaladon. This creature, which remains close to the surface and rarely dives beneath the waves, slowly wanders around a large interior ocean, often alone in its travels. In other instances, other Whaladons have been seen accompanying the large creature, as well as protecting it from potential hazards and threats. Those coastal and island communities that call the area home are also highly protective of the creature, and a pseudo religion that worships the creature has arisen in some of these communities. |
The Viridian Wall |
Named for the vibrant blue-green mosses, lichen, and foliage that hang along the otherwise bright chalk cliffs - its full length dominates much of the Northern Coast of the Inland Ocean. Small communities have established themselves on these higher cliffs, often carefully raising and farming the various avian species that also call the cliffs home; the large broad plains atop the cliffs are also home to many grazing animals. A series of switchbacks and slopes located in various places make it possible to venture down to the coast - when the tides are low - permitting access to tidal pools and kelp forests that are otherwise covered by the ocean. The area is also home to the largest concentrations of Selonian, Chadra-Fan, and Chagrian communities due to its close proximity to the ocean, as well as its predictable tidal tables. |
Blue River Run |
A vast river valley surrounded on all sides by white chalk cliffs and plateaus, it is a region that dominates a large portion of the Western Continent - a number of communities, such as Dewhurst, are located on the many tributary rivers and streams that break away from the main body of water that carves its way through the valley. Waterfalls, rapids, and all manner of hazards makes navigating the river difficult and at times treacherous - with only the tributary waterways offering a calm, predictable, and pleasant journey. In many areas rudimentary locks, canals, and chambers are utilized to provide a means to more easily access certain areas of the river or to overcome the various waterfalls along the length of the run. |
Bubbling Glades |
Nestled at the furthest reaches of the Blue River Run, where the mighty roar of the river trickles off to a quiet burbling bubbling melody as it reaches its final destination, a vast, sprawling mangrove forest that separates the Blue River Run from the Eastern Ocean. It is here that the waters of the river eventually mix and flow into the ocean - whilst the mangroves themselves provide an abundant ecological cornucopia in terms of various native flora and fauna that dominate the region and call the various bubbling brooks and twisted mangrove roots, home. Though rich in nutrients, the twisted roots and rocky ground have made cultivation of the land near impossible; the remnants of a few failed farmsteads can be found dotting the landscape, having since fallen into disrepair due to being abandoned. |
Hollyfolk Grasslands |
The home and heart of grazing and ranching on Nirine, the Grasslands extend for acres over the horizon upon the rolling hills, as far as the eye can see. Vast herds of Sheep, Staga, and Nerfs can be seen grazing on the grasses and carefully herded by their shepherds. In many cases, these vast herds are watched by droids and other armed individuals, the prices of the animal's themselves being such that it is not uncommon for rustlers to attempt to cut a few heads from a herd in a bid to collect a bit of pay. The region is also home to some of the largest ranches on Nirine, with those that claim this land as their home being very protective of not only their herds, of each other just as much. In a sense, the people of the Hollyfolk are more united than the rest of the communities on Nirine. |
Cordale Expanse |
Perhaps one of the most populated regions of Nirine, the Expanse, as it is locally known, was named after the first family that settled the region and fought through many of the hardships that come with settling the unknown. The Cordale Family Homestead still remains, and over the years they've shifted from an agrarian lifestyle to one of supply - acting as one of the few general goods and way stations in the area. They import equipment and other goods through Dewhurts - and in more recent days through The Halcyon Corporation Outpost - to provide for the needs and wants of the other communities and families that call the Expanse home. |
The Nirine Hinterlands |
An untapped verdant paradise, the Hinterlands are guarded by Dewhurst, the de facto Capital and otherwise gateway to the expansive and untouched territories beyond. The Hinterlands are some of the last, unexplored regions of the planet - and many of the untapped resources that Nirine contains are found deep within this region. Even some of the largest specimens of transplanted Worshyr Trees are known to dwell deep within the Hinterlands, hiding Wookiee Colonies and other untold wonders beyond. Those that venture into the Hinterlands, and manage to return, tell of strange happenings, majestic and unbelievable beasts, and even stranger individuals that live a nomadic and near primitive lifestyle. These "Barbarians" are said to ride the native Fauna across the rolling hills, shrublands, and prairies that dominate much of the region. |

General Planetary Cultural Information |
Culturally as diverse as the forms of government and military capabilities of its far-flung communities, Nirine is otherwise culturally united - in a sense - through its overall Agrarian Society. Communities, even those that are a bit more well off, are focused around agricultural pursuits, as seen in the designation of Nirine as an Agriworld; the culture that has developed has done so along those lines and focuses of such a society. Religion, for the most part, when it is practiced, is centered around the veneration of weather deities and harvest deities. These beliefs are focused on the need for good seasons, mild weather, and calm seas - for those that ply their trade on the oceans and seas of the planet; with at least a handful of coastal communities openly worshipping a Whaladon as a deity. General day to day activities are centered around the work and needs of the community, first, and the needs of the individual, second. To this end, it is not uncommon for individuals to wake early and see to the fields and daily chores before they attend to personal matters or leisure time, and most schooling is often done on a community level - though this is usually just as diverse as the communities themselves. Beyond this, there is little worry or care for the needs or problems of Off-Worlders, with the people of Nirine remaining blissfully unaware of the problems of the Ascendancy as a whole unless those problems are forced upon them; such as dealing with raiding parties or pirates. Even then, the culture of self dependence often wins out in the end, and these communities are more focused on themselves and their own communities; preventing a larger unitary planetary government from forming. |

Additional Political, Economic, and Societal Information |
Government |
Nirine lacks what many would consider a Cohesive, Centralized, Unitary Planetary Government. Rather, the planet functions under a number of Decentralized Communities, each governed as different from the others as the individuals or groups that call such communities home. In some cases, these decentralized communities are utopian communes, with each resident working for the benefit and betterment of the community as a whole. In other instances, the community is treated as a personal fiefdom of a singular individual, lorded over as though it were their own little kingdom in the days when feudalism reigned. Other communities have embraced Democracy, flaws and all, to dictate the form and function of each citizen and the direction that their community takes. This highly decentralized society has also largely attracted pirates, smugglers, and other outlaws to the planet due to the lack of a unified planetary police force presence. |
Planetary Wealth Analysis |
Nirine is not a planet burdened with wealth and ladened with riches as some planets. What natural resources that it does hold, are often in such a large quantity and of higher quality elsewhere, that the process of extracting them from Nirine would be more costly than the potential profits that they might bring. In regards to its other natural resources, such as Pearls, Wroshyr Trees, and even the oil from Whaladons; the process of securing, processing, and transporting these goods off-planet would likely just as well cost more than it would be worth in the long run - not to mention the potential problems it would cause with local populations in those areas. The true wealth of Nirine lies within its Agriculture and the various crops and foodstuffs that they transport off-planet. Even then, as they are not mechanized to a sufficient degree - such as with other larger Agriworlds - the wealth brought in from these sales is often enough to keep a community in relatively modest means, and by no measure to make them rich beyond measure. |
Planetary Stability Analysis |
Society is governed by what is often considered the norm for a particular group or species residing within a community; to this end, Stability is often also measured on a case-by-case basis due to the widespread independence and seclusion of the decentralized communities that claim Nirine as their home. In some cases, an individual can freely walk through a community without worry of being accosted by anyone, in others, they are just as likely to be set upon by what passes for the local law as they are to fall victim to a criminal act. Government, or what passes for it, is likewise dependent upon the community, and in some cases, such as seen in Oaken Shire Fields kept under the watchful and near tyrannical fist of a Hutt known as 'The Old Oak', government and control is retained in one individual. In other instances, a community is peaceful and welcomes outsiders and visitors, if only to increase the communities wealth and standing among the others. This creates a strange and oft times odd mixture of Stability, in that some regions are peaceful, accepting of outsiders and safe for their visit and travels - while in other regions, they may be met with suspicion and hostility for their presence. The only location which can be argued to be the most stable and law-abiding would be The Halcyon Corporation Outpost or one of the more developed communities such as the de facto Capital of Dewhurst. Beyond that, it is a hodgepodge of stability where the law often resides in the hands of a singular individual. |
Freedom and Oppression Analysis |
In many instances, individuals are free to act as they see fit provided that their behavior and actions do not otherwise harm others or go against the societal norms of their community. To this end, freedom is rather open, however, there are still limits and it is greatly dependent upon the community and general society in which an individual resides. For instance, in those communities that are treated more akin to a personal Fiefdom, individual freedoms are a bit more difficult to come by - with all actions being approved or otherwise at the whim of the individual that claims hold of the land and community - usually through force of arms rather than any other means. In other communities, specifically, those that are more centered around democracy or a sense of communal oneness, an individual is often - as mentioned above - left to their own devices provided that those devices cause no harm to others. Likewise, Laws and the enforcement of those Laws also fall upon each individual community - and in many cases - even the Common Law of the Ascendancy is usually adhered to in one form or another. Still, without the presence of a planetary government, the enforcement of laws on a planetary scale is next to impossible; often resulting in the presence of hidden pirate fortresses and raider encampments on the planet. |
MILITARY AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS |
Level of Military Readiness |
Just as it is lacking a de facto Centralized Planetary Government, the same is true of its military forces - or - lack thereof. In many cases, defense comes down to individual communities, which are often too focused on their own worries and troubles to come together in a single, cohesive fighting force; or to even hold passing care for outside communities from their own. In most cases, what passes for a military presence is a local militia, often poorly trained and equipped and nothing more than farmers with pitchforks and cycler rifles, or the odd blaster. In rarer cases, specifically, those in which a community is reigned over by a proclaimed noble, their training and equipment happens to be of a higher caliber due to the more readily available funds - though even these personal armies are nothing more than a ragtag band of raiders or pirates with little care beyond where the money is coming from. The only true Military Force present on the planet - in any large and permanent capacity - is that of the Guardians of the Whills, who protect pilgrims journeying to their hilltop community. The Guardians also act as de facto law enforcement and peacekeepers in the immediate vicinity of their settlement, often traveling to neighboring communities to adjudicate disagreements and ensure that larger conflicts do not emerge from communities bickering between one another. Outside of these local militias and the Guardians of the Whills, remain the Corporate Security Forces of the Halcyon Corporation - however - they are less focused on the wellbeing and conflicts of neighboring communities and more focused on ensuring the security and safety of the Halcyon Corporation Outpost present on the planet. |
Technological level compared to the Galactic Standard |
Just as the means of governance varies from community to community, so too does the level of technology. In larger, more condensed communities - such as the de facto Capital Dewhurst, or The Halcyon Corporation Outpost - technology is on par with the galactic standard or to some level of such depending on the needs, means, and other mitigating factors that would permit an individual to get their hands on a piece of technology. In other, remote locations, such as a simple farmstead in the middle of nowhere, technology is much more difficult to come by, and often at times, these secluded communities could be seen to be more primitive or have access to a piece of technology that is nearly as old as the community itself in some cases. However, as stated, unless an individual finds themselves in these far-flung, remote communities, the level of technology on Nirine is that of the Galactic Standard with its many exceptions otherwise. |
HISTORICAL PLANETARY INFORMATION |
A sparsely populated planet, much of the historical record of Nirine is unknown and remains so, with few if any artifacts or other pointers of possible previous habitation or cultures that had claimed the planet as their home prior to the agrarian communities that now claim the world. At some point in its distant past, it is known that Nirine hosted one or two celestial bodies - a moon and a companion planetoid or object. The evidence of this remains in the planetary rings that orbit Nirine - with larger sections utilized to house asteroid hangers and storage facilities for the large quantities of foodstuffs that the planet produces and sells to off-worlders. The exact nature of the cataclysm of events that resulted in the destruction of the planet's moon and companion is still unknown, and given the lack of natural resources on Nirine or of any trace in the samples, there is little attention paid to the event. Colonization and settlement of Nirine have happened over the course of years, often as those from other planets in the Shiraya Expanse seek a place of their own or those from without being trapped in the Expanse itself. This can be seen in the introduction of the Wroshyr Trees that dot the land - though haven't taken root in massive forests as seen on Kashyyyk. Likewise, this slow trickle of settlers to Nirine is seen in the vast differences of the Communities that have grown in various regions on the planet - from vast Agricultural Fields and Ranches to Coastal Communities and even the settling of a pod of Whaladons that had previously been saved from an Imperial Whaladon Processing Center during the height of Palpatine's Galactic Empire. Nirine saw its largest influx of settlers during the expansion of the Khanate within the Shiraya Expanse, as more individuals sought to flee from conflict and find a means to seclude themselves and protect themselves. However, this has also drawn in more undesirable elements, and it is not uncommon for Nirine to play host to a hidden pirate base in its planetary rings, or a raider fortress on the surface tucked away in the more uncivilized and hostile regions that have remained untouched and gone unexplored. In more recent history, with the establishment of The Halcyon Corporation on neighboring Khrea and the rise of the Ascendancy within the Expanse, Nirine has seen another influx of individuals. |
