Non-Star Wars RP: Marvel Comics Edition

Alright, so, we've been issued a challenge. If this notion to offer a Non-Star Wars RP sub-board is to pass muster, we must first establish that there is enough consolidated interest to warrant it. In addition to this, we must also provide proof of concept that this new board could still maintain the quality of the SWRP brand.

So, yeah. First things first. Who's interested? I know I am.

Second things second. How would we work this? Me, personally, I'd outlaw Original Characters because they all suck. We'd focus on the comicverse as it exists now or reasonably close to now, with no Movieverse overlap because all of that sucks. Characters could revert to older versions of themselves, wear throwback and alternate reality costumes, etc., but they do so recognizing that it would be a noticeable change, and that all events that have occurred since that iteration are still considered to have occurred. For example, if you want to play Psylocke prior to her Revanche bodyswap, you can do that, but you do so with the understanding that Jubilee might be all, "What the hell, Bets? I thought that body was destroyed. How'd you change?" And that you'd have to have an explanation beyond, "What do you mean? I've always been like this. What do you mean ' It's not 1989'?"

Uh...I lost momentum. Spam this thread with related ideas.

Get at me.

It's pretty difficult to roleplay already-made characters, to get personalities and mannerisms exactly right with a character you didn't write, but I already expressed my concern about that. :p *Says it again* We should protray custom versions of the canon characters... I.E You make you rown backstory, personality, mannerisms, name, etc for Batman to be Batman. Just my opinion though.

I know more about and prefer DC, but I'll join up for Marvel nontheless. :D

Do you have to be a canon character, or can you be a custom character? (Like completely make your own, uising Marvel Universe's species / powers)

Interesting idea - I wouldn't be able to do much as I'm only aware of the Marvel movies, but I do know a lot of the characters, just not hardcore comic book lore.

But I'd certainly have a look - all RP is good RP in my eyes. :)

I'd rather we role play our own characters in the world. I like Marvel but honestly I'll I'd have to do is be Doreen Green and I win. I'd rather be a Shield Agent fresh off the airship getting taught by Bobbi and Natasha or an X-man with Cyclops and Lorna teaching.

It's not difficult at all. As of right now, there's at least 5 different writers on X-Men characters, and there have been several before them. You don't have to get them exactly right, you just have to get the essence. What makes your interpretation good is about what you choose to keep and what you choose to bring. In fact, it's because of this that playing Canon Characters is more profound than making new ones. Your new one's always going to be some crap OC that ultimately rips off whatever character your aping or whatever movie you're currently plagiarizing anyway, only now we're going to have to bore ourselves through four years of bar threads as the OC fumbles through an origin story.

OCs are terrible in this context, really, I've been to countless superhero boards and they always have that same tone because they're always just an excuse to Mary Sue and Gary Stu. The boundaries of a character blueprint keep people honest, and keep the player accountable to his peers and fellow fans. They're also representative of greater societal concepts that are pulled into story by the world around us, they have rich histories that, if organized correctly, create new opportunities and character directions, and they have powers that are already accepted on their own terms.

That said, I'm open to the idea of allowing OCs in addition to Canons. I'd never ever omit canons, though.

How can I say that I’m not interested in rping Marvel. This is a bit tempting for me and I might have to pull out Alyisa Mithel who double in another Universe as Ema Frost the White Queen.

Also [member="Cyclops"] from your post there you almost sounded like Mad Cap.

Keep in mind that we're currently RPing Star Wars, and I'm sure not all of us are equal and up on the expansive lore. Me, personally, have seen the movies and played KotOR, and that's it. I try to work within those tones and themes, but at the end of the day, most of what I've got to offer, I've brought myself and not gleaned from a slavish devotion to wookieepedia. Ask any comic writer. You think they read every title available just in case they may have to write it one day?

Any question can be asked or researched, really.

Mad Cap?

And by "as the comics are currently," I mean the current status-quo. Not every individual storyline down to the letter. For example, we don't have to RP Axis or Hickman's brilliance 7 months in the future, but Cyclops is still being blamed for the death of Xavier and is leading a Mutant Rights Extremist group. Wolverine can still be alive, if we really want.

It has been years since I have read any comics. I would have to do one or two of these many things. One, do a lot of reading. Two, have Ema suffer memory loss again. . Three do a days of future past, trust Ema into the past from a future that is different then what everyone knows and at some point shift from the realty everyone knows. Or just do a combo of memory loss days of future past.

I think it has been over ten years since I have read a Marvel comic book.

I've never read a marvel comic book in my life. I only know a little marvel lore from doing marvel roleplays.

I know enough, however. Sign me up for Carnage. :p

*Looks through Marvel Encyclopedia*

I'll be War Machine.... Possibly post-Civil War

But I'd much rather do my old 'drunken captain' bit with an OC...

Sick. So, there's Step 1. We've got some interest.

But it's a big, big world out there, and we're not starting our own full board -- so, like, how does this work?

In my opinion, just start an open thread and let things roll out. Prehaps, in cliche comic fashion, start it with some minor criminal (or a major villain) robbing a bank or mugging someone (or wreaking havoc), then watch where it goes from there. Chances are, hero(es) will show up, villain(s) will be attracted to heroes, and things will go from there.

More focused threads with character development, talking, and the like should happen once more interest is built up. An all-out comic brawl should get us more attention.

Then again, I'm speaking from expirience of non-forum roleplays, not forum boards, so I could be suggesting something that wouldn't work.

What you’re saying could work. It could be a simple way to start a thread and get characters interacting with each other with out the writers worrying about a in-depth story plot to bring the character in this wish to wrote.
