Norr Cryonics

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: Create an explanation for how the Norr as a civilization move massive amounts of people around the galaxy despite their remote location without access to food while they are known for their high calorie requirements due to their physiology.

  • Primary Source: Suspended animation, Cryogenic hibernation capsule.
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Biological Suspension.
STRENGTHS
  • Biological Suspension: When this Cryonic technology and leveraged as designed, an individual inside such a cryonic storage device, provided there is no disruption to the power supply, would have all of their biological processes suspended; this is extraordinarily useful for the Norr who individually consume a significant amount of calories and energy to fuel their bodies. Especially on long military campaigns, ergo. More consumables can be saved on lengthy campaigns during transit, where they would typically be used merely to sustain passengers. There is also another use for such technology in that it can be used to suspend an injured person's condition, even if they are mortally wounded or freshly clinically dead, for revival or alternatively for DNA harvesting as the Norr are known to do to protect population growth.
  • Concealed lifesigns: Because of the nature in which the individual is suspended to the point where all of the organs' processes have stopped it hides the individuals interred in question from remote life-sign scans, this has uses: An opponent can be lured into boarding an apparent derelict ship wrapped in a false sense of security just for a Droid Intelligence to reawaken the sum total of the ship's crew.
WEAKNESSES
  • Clothing: Due to the fundamental mechanism of cryonic technology being the leveraging of the cold to stop biological processes, individuals have to enter Norr cryonic chambers without any clothing on their person as the contact between fabric and skin can cause 'freezer burns' where the clothing adheres to the skin. Thawing a person wearing clothing isn't fatal but will generally result in excruciating and uncomfortable sores. However, form-fitting pressurized bodysuits can counter this risk somewhat, allowing Norr soldiers, at the least, to enter cryonic chambers fully armoured.
  • Thawing Process: Norr cryonic technology is effective, but the thawing process must be gradually over about fifteen to twenty minutes for no adverse side effects from storage. Accelerated thawing can have disastrous, even moral consequences for a stored individual, such as arrhythmia and a rapid loss in blood pressure resulting in death at the worst when cold blood is forced through the cardiac system resulting in death for thaws that are shorter than five minutes. For thaws between ten to fifteen minutes, an individual will typically be disorientated and confused, with their reaction times dramatically decreased. There is another implication for emergencies where passengers of ships equipped with this technology might be left vulnerable or unable to help their fellows.
DESCRIPTION
Norr Cryonics for commercial and transport use first made their appearance in the race's history about 600 ABY when the race was exploring their own solar system with an exoatmospheric Navy; the Norr wanted to suspend the biological processes of the non-essential crew when they weren't required to perform their duties and so invested heavily in this technology in terms of research. Even though the Norr has a grasp of faster-than-light travel, Cryonics still have a place in their space-faring culture. Due to the Norr's bodies and their energy expenditure, they consume large amounts of food on journeys through space. Cryonics is widely used to stand down non-essential crews during a campaign, especially if the campaign is far away from resupply. This makes it especially difficult to starve a roving Norr fleet as they can ration their food extraordinarily tightly; cultures and armies without widespread use of this technology simply cannot achieve this. The same goes for their colonial efforts, which often face isolation; Norr can simply freeze extra mouths to feed until the community can sustain their existence and labour.
