Not as clumsy or random as a blaster…

Corvus carried a small box under her arm. It was late morning and she’ just been taking a class of Younglings on the subject of the Code. Today’s lesson was all about conquering recklessness — often a challenge for the young, and sometimes the not so young.

She made her may to a small clearing in the Ossus grounds, surrounded by mature trees — a natural amphitheatre for learning about the saber. Once there, she put the box down and pulled out a training saber. There were a variety of sizes and styles, from curved Mavashi hilts to double bladed variants.

She activated her chosen saber with a familiar snap-hiss. The blue blade seemed to be working perfectly, so she turned it off and clipped it to her belt before removing her cloak and folding it neatly before placing it next to the box.

As she waited for the person she was training to arrive, she performed a few moves in her preferred Form — Soresu. In truth she had no idea what the newcomer already knew or what Form they’d prefer to learn, but as long as it wasn’t the seventh, Corvus had enough knowledge to teach a Padawan.

One of the advantages of the Jedi was that there were so many. It meant that for those like Arrikabukk could now have teachings given by serveral masters instead of just one. Much like with her own people, or any society in-general, while you could have had people who were skilled in many things only an exepctional few were experts in one general area. Much like the way a hunter may know how to fish, but a fisherman knows how to fish good.

That was her situation today. Arri already had a master in Tyl Ro, the Kaminoan who would teach her in the ways of the Force. But being a jedi involved more than that. She also needed to learn how to use the iconic weapon of the order, a lightsaber. She was to meet with none other than the grandmaster of the order, [member="Corvus Raaf"] herself. Even for a wookie Arri was nervous to meet someone whom she could only assume was a powerful user of the force.

The large hairy girl made her way out to the training area where she could already sense the powerful master at practice. She stopped just short of the training area outside the temple and watched, taking note of how she moved. So expertly in-fact that Arri began to wonder if her hulking furry body would be able to match that in the years of training to come.

Corvus had a mantra for every occasion. Sometimes more than one. And when it came to mastery of a Force Ability, she relied on the teachings of Master Gladwell. Practice. His empirical research showed that it took roughly ten thousand hours to achieve. Innate ability was irrelevant. In fact it was a hindrance as those that were naturally gifted tended to practice less and were eventually overtaken by those that put the hours in.

So over two decades of saber practice allowed Corvus to look fluid and accomplished. In truth she was never a quick learner – she was just a hard worker. Sixteen thousand hours and counting was the reason she was accomplished, nothing else. So if she could do it, anyone could.

Except there was one additional aspect that helped. Corvus had fallen in love with practice. She wanted to do little else and saw spare time as an opportunity to work on her limited range of skills – again, she saw no value in being a jack-of-all-trades and was focused on being a master of a few. There were only so many hours in the day after all.

She sensed the new Padawan before she saw her – it was inevitable for a Jedi Master. And she filtered her emotions down low, she suspected the learner would be nervous and didn’t need to ‘feel’ the sensation second-hand – it would only exacerbate the situation.
So she deactivated her saber and bowed. Straightening up she smiled. “Padawan [member="Arrikabukk"] I presume? I am Corvus, and welcome to the Academy, as I’m sure I’d have remembered meeting you before.”

“So, before I drone on and on about stuff you already know, please tell me what you’d like to learn and what you’re already familiar with. For example what Forms do you know, which would you like to practice…that sort of thing.” She smiled again and her voice was warm and friendly.
