Link: Starship Guide v2.0
So I built a ship for the first time ever and wanted to share with you all, and Ashin, my thoughts and advice throughout the endeavor.Though it still hasn't been submitted yet, I followed the guide as best I could and am fairly confident I will have minimal changes to make. Now, my ship was a basic support ship so I did not get a good look at things like the armament and stealth sections, but I did glaze over them.
Here are my thoughts, I will write them out as they came to me when creating the ship.
Observations
- How To Build A Starship 2.0 should be broken into separate posts (less than 20) so each section can be externally linked to.
Reasoning: This will provide an easy way to index the guide for reference.
-The Production category should list out each method of production available and their details, provided in a list format.
Reasoning: It seems very convoluted, as nothing is in order and it's all jammed into a paragraph. While it does read easily enough, it took some time for me - a confessed slow reader - to fully process.
-Following on with the previous observation, I believe each explanation should be broken down in to what is required of the Template section and what the Guide's explanation of that section is. For instance, for the Role Category, you could break it down with a whole variety of roles as the answer to the template section so the viewer can choose from among them. They can then read the Author's notes at the bottom of this section, which states that you do not have to adhere to these specific examples. I believe it will make things easier to break each section into a wide variety of "possible answers" and then "Author's notes" which explain the guide in more detail, as well as the viewer's options.
Reasoning: For people who want a quick ship drawn up, this method will suit them best and following the options will likely increase accuracy and the level of acceptable entries. For people who want less cookie cutter and more depth - read the author's notes and see what easter eggs you can dig up.
-Color Code The Types Of Different Starships! Organization is key and I love that you already have the different types in the guide. I used this to my advantage after deciding on what I wanted to make, and I made that decision by being instructed by the guide. Corvettes are purple, Frigates are red, Cruisers are yellow... doesn't matter, every time they get listed out - color code them!
Reasoning: I think this will provide excellent referential success and will speed up the process and ease of creating starships for players.
-Cargo Capacity Is missing from the guide. Do we not care about this? I was trying to find a reference for how much space I needed, as I'm not a math whiz and didn't want to try to determine the volume of my ship. Especially after I got spoon fed with the wonderful addition of the 6 - 2 - 1 ratio from earlier, a reference for this would be excellent as well.
Reasoning: People come here to role-play, not do math. Let's cut corners where we can.
