SPECIAL FEATURES
- Tachyon Battery - The Crystal is a useful tool in Tachyon Sensors as it has the rare property of being able to absorb these particles.
- Matter Converter - Nouverian is strange. It interacts with other matter converting it into itself, essentially reproducing. This process is documented as being very slow sometimes taking decades or even centuries at a macro level. Furthermore, the effect 'decays' and the crystal eventually stabilises to a more natural Carbon state.
STRENGTHS
- Hyperspace Catalyst - If used correctly Nouverian Crystals can be utilised as a means of entering Hyperspace, this can be done by absorbing a sufficient amount of Tachyon particles into the crystal and triggering a controlled detonation releasing enough energy to create a 'wave' which transports the ship.
- Reproductive - While the process is slow, adequately cultivated and maintained the Crystals can be replenished to provide a reliable fuel source for compatible Hyperspace Engines.
WEAKNESSES
- Stabilisation - Once a crystal has stabilised it is functionally nothing more than a carbon crystal with the properties of such. This makes its applications extremely restrictive and challenging.
- Infectious - Generally speaking Nouverian Crystals aren't dangerous, occasionally touching one or interacting with it will not cause any lasting harm although it may induce mild side effects. However, long-term unprotected exposure can lead to terminal conditions, and in extreme cases cause the body to crystalise. Due to its effects, protective gear is usually recommended to be worn and regularly replaced for those who mine or utilise this resource.
DESCRIPTION
The wider galaxy views Nouverian Crystals as a dangerous curiosity that are sometimes used in precise sensor arrays designed to detect incoming or outgoing Hyperspace activity and other novel technologies. The primary constraint is the natural life cycle of the crystal means it must regularly be replaced in components usually at a high cost. Furthermore, following a containment breach at a lab in 347ABY, it was reported nearly a century later that the Mineral had been found growing in underground caverns, poisoning water supplies.
Following this, the material's research was restricted to remote outposts or aboard specialised orbital labs where the risk of contamination was lowest.
One natural deposit known is the Avali homeworld which has been studied for centuries by the Citalee Guild where they discovered at specific resonant frequencies the crystal became inert, allowing for safe storage and handling, at least temporarily. This discovery has allowed the Avali to achieve Hyperspace travel, albeit via a method other civilisations might deem crude or inefficient.
