An ancient order of guardians founded long before the Alula exile predating the New Star League into time long ago. So long ago that the direct history has been lost to time, the warrior band named the Moon Guard swore loyalty to the Imperial Throne of the Old Star League. An all-female Echani order that has adapted over the years in its role as the hereditary guardians and protectors of the Imperial House, most recently House Sameron of the New Star League.
The order is dedicated wholesale to the life of a sentinel, and members put the Moon Guard over house or personal or military loyalties. It is a great honour to be asked to join, and selection is very rarely refused, even by high nobles who must forswear their house loyalty to become an initiate.
The Moon Guard long established a reputation for efficiency that stood out even among the exiled Echani that came to be known as Alulans. Though perennially under the command of the imperial throne, they often act pre-emptively and decisively, ignoring law and custom in favour of executing threats. They are deadly assassins, and thus make for excellent personal protection and security. They do not tolerate threats to their principals. They are known for putting themselves between the protectee and harm, no matter the circumstance. Several rebellions against the throne came to an end when the Moon Guard penetrated the rebel headquarters and killed or captured the enemy leadership.
When House Sameron was destroyed, the Moon Guard retreated to a monastic existence and became isolated from the New Star League, taking no part in the succession conflict. When the Council of Seven was established to replace the imperial throne, the Moon Guard established an official position of neutrality, refusing to recognize the Council as inheriting the protection due the Imperial House. Despite having no protectee to serve, the order continued to recruit and train, keeping its edge.
When Aria Talen became Captain of the Moon Guard, her family alignments established a visible bond between the Moon Guard and the Houses Talen through birth and Susni through marriage. Despite her personal neutrality, the perception of alliance was often taken advantage of by the noble houses, causing further estrangement between the Moon Guard and the noble houses. Aria continued the process of pushing on the Moon Guard to go forward despite the lack of an apparent purpose.
When Arla Susni was disinherited and exiled from the New Star League by her brother Ardan, Aria and the Moon Guard found their purpose once more, and swore their service for only the second time in recorded history to the Commander of the New Star League Remnants. They now serve House Susni in exile. Though Arla is no longer officially a noble, her military rank and her long years of service have ensured the loyalty of Captain Aria Talen and her Moon Guard. They are currently homed aboard the Defender, Arla Susni's flagship, at the head of her Relief Force.
