PHYSICAL INFORMATION
Age: 27
Force Sensitivity: Knight
Species: Sith Pureblood
Appearance: With her crimson skin, short-cropped raven hair and bony tendrils in the place of eyebrows, Nyssa is a typical member of the Sith Purebloods that ruled an empire millennia ago, but have by now become extremely rare in the Galaxy. Generations of inbreeding with humans means that her facial tentacles are less pronounced than they might have been during the days of King Adas, though her family would still insist that they were 'true Sith'. Nyssa is about 6'1 tall, possessing an athletic, impressively muscled body with the physique of a warrior. She keeps in shape through constant exercise, training to an obsessive degree.
Her body is her temple, and she works hard to keep it in very good condition. She lacks cranial horns, but has cheek tentacles, sulfuric yellow eyes and retractable claws. All in all, her profile is sharp, fierce and predatory. Her body is marred by a variety of scars. Some were inflicted upon her during training as a Sith acolyte, while others were earned in combat. Nyssa has a low-pitched voice, speaking in a deep contralto. Her right hand was blown up during her duel with Elpsis. It has since been replaced by a sturdy cybernetic limb, which is made out of enchanted songsteel. The magitech appendage can be covered with synthskin, though Nyssa chooses not to.
SOCIAL INFORMATION
Name: Nyssa Vykaris
Loyalties: Herself, Elpsis Kerrigan, Firemane Industries, Order of Fire, Champions of the Flame, Inferno Platoon.
Wealth: The destruction of her house left Nyssa with very little, but her financial circumstances have stabilised now. Like every member of the Order of Fire, Nyssa receives remuneration from Firemane in return for her services. The pay is on a sliding scale based on experience, rank, reward and so on. She should be able to enjoy a comfortable though not luxurious retirement when her service ends. She also has some loot and Sith artefacts stashed away if needed, though turning them into hard currency might be a bit difficult. She is also friends with Elpsis, who's the daughter of the leader of a megacorporation. Suffice to say Nyssa is well-off, but not rich. Her personal life style is frugal, though this is out of choice.
Notable Possessions: Owns an archaic Lanvarok and a Sith Sword that was passed down the generations as a family heirloom. It has a Devaronian edge. Moreover, she's in possession of her sister Alypia's lightsabre and holocron. The latter does not teach any particularly remarkable powers, but details Alypia's personal and philosophical thoughts, for the ostensibly devout Sith was actually a heretical Lightsider. Nyssa keeps them in memory of the sibling she killed. She possesses a suit of Centurion Battle Armour and a pair of Imperial Knight style cortosis gauntlets. She owns a crossguard lightsabre with a scarlet blade, dual phase mode, bifurcating cyclical ignition and other standard lightsabre systems.
Skills: Nyssa is a Sith Warrior with a strong Force connection. She is a very potent duellist with a lightsabre, alchemised and conventional weapons. She has a preference for Djem So or Juyo. Moreover, she can utilise ranged weapons, though she prefers weapons that make a boom such as bolters or shotguns. Likewise, she is good at hand to hand combat. Combat skills aside, she is very good at forging and has basic first aid skills. She is very knowledgeable of Sith history, especially the ancient history of the Pureblood Sith dynasties.
Languages: Nyssa is a Pureblood, so Sith is her mother tongue. She can also speak and understand Basic, Xio (Xioquo language) and Zandri (main Qadiri language). She understands Huttese, and can speak it a bit, but lacks fluency.
Personality: Brave in combat, cynical, boastful, dedicated and prideful. Lawful Evil sums up her moral alignment. All her life, Nyssa was raised to believe in the Sith Code, as it was laid down by the ancient Sorzus Syn. Life was defined by pain. Her master brought her pain to strengthen her for battle. There was no place for weakness, for only the strong possessed a right to rule, whereas the weak were nothing but chattel. As the scion of an old Sith bloodline that was obsessed with reclaiming what it considered to be its rightful place of power, she was expected to be an embodiment of the Sith ideology, bringing death to Jedi and heretics alike, while at the same time gaining power.
Her mother, a powerful Sith Master, pushed her children to excel. Nyssa learned to be strong, ruthless and savage, though a number of events caused embers of doubt to manifest inside her. Now she stands at a crossroad, with one foot in a new world, but with the other still in the old one. Disillusioned, she is in moving away from the more nihilistic ideals of the Sith. But old attitudes are hard to shake off. She is prideful, mildly xenophobic and a blood knight who revels in battle and believes glory can be obtained through it. She's quick to anger when she feels slighted. The Pureblood respects martial valour, initiative and daring. An unrepentant blood knight, she revels in combat when she can test herself against a strong foe. This mentality gives her a peculiar honour code. She disdains those who trample on the helpless not because it's morally wrong, but because it's cowardly and a sign of weakness. Similarly, Nyssa doesn't view slavery as immoral, but aso doesn't think it's wrong of a slave to kill their master. The owner was weak and clearly too dependent on their slave. The slave has proved their strength and may do with the owner and his/her dependents as they see fit.
At first Nyssa was very isolated in the Order of Fire, Firemane's Force-using, where she was widely distrusted and closely monitored. This is understandable since she fought against three of the Order's operatives on Anderahl and, following her capture, initially intended to use them as pawns to get rid of her rivals in the Sith cult she belonged to. Her own attitude has not helped matters. So she was put on probation. It has also not escaped her attention that while the Order regards Sith as evil, a number of their members are Dark Force-users themselves. This seems a bit contradictory to her. Nyssa's actions on Tephrike have ended her probationary status and made her a full member of the Order.
She is ambitious and intends to rise in the ranks. Despite her arrogance, Nyssa is disciplined and conducts herself as a soldier. However, her blunt attitude can get her in trouble with superiors. Nyssa is largely self-serving with the exception of people she considers friends. The Pureblood possesses a solid sense of confidence, self-worth and martial honour. Though her typical attitude is blunt and rather crude, Nyssa's education actually gives her a good understanding of court politics and courtly protocol. In other words, she knows how to behave when in the presence of nobles, when she chooses to. It helps that she has a flair for the dramatic.
Nyssa feels respect for Elpsis due to the pyromancer beating her in combat, though this gnaws at her pride. Rather than torturing her as she expected, Elpsis and Taryc Ap'Irae showed her compassion, with some elements of tough love since they're not flower children. Faced with the possibility of something better than the life she's used to, the Pureblood has decided to give the Order s a chance, but still retains her own views rather than doing a 180. What baffled Nyssa was that Elpsis seemed to have little ambition. She was far too content with her present station. This was inconceivable. So she tried to influence Elpsis to become more assertive and take charge of her destiny. Though they have often argued about this or that, on a certain level Nyssa does care for Elpsis and is protective of her. She shows a kinder side when she is around her, though her attempts at being sweet are often rather awkward. Nyssa does not feel any ideological loyalty to Firemane, but is loyal on an institutional level.
Nyssa often comes across as grumpy, arrogant and crude. Some of her personality traits are exaggerated a bit to fit the 'true Sith' formula or hide her insecurities. Being someone with a strong martial ethos, she does not respect people who back down from a confrontation. Having been raised on admittedly biased accounts of the Great Hyperspace War and other events, Nyssa is very scornful of Jedi. Recent events on Tephrike have only intensified this. She and Elpsis come across as a bit of an odd couple as their personalities seem to clash a good deal. However, they are there to help each other out if need be. In a way, Elpsis respects Nyssa more because the Pureblood has not suddenly claimed that she's turned a new leaf and walked through the revolving alignment door. Nyssa's more cynical outlook on the galaxy complements Elpsis' more idealistic views. She has recently taken an active role in providing combat training for young Fire Acolytes. Unsurprisingly, her training methods are very harsh. She is a blunt sort and does not mince words, even in the presence of superiors. She favours cynical realism over idealism.
One of Nyssa's idiosyncracies is that she is more than a little xenophobic towards Sith who are not Purebloods. In her opinion, non-racial Sith are not 'true' Sith, but poseurs who appropriated and bastardised her people's proud culture. Her views are more than a little ironic because even 'Purebloods' like her are hybrids rather than 'pure' Sith. However, her family were Sith nationalists, and old beliefs are hard to shake. While she has tried to move away from the more self-destructive aspects of Sith ideology and has discovered that her family's own adherence to it was not as pure as she thought, Nyssa is quite proud of her heritage and very knowledgeable about Sith history. Her family claimed that they could trace their line back to a warlord who fought under the banner of the legendary King Adas. Ironically, another ancestor might have been a Sith Je'daii, but the records say little about this heretical Vykaris. It is fair to say that Nyssa romanticises the 'true Sith' quite a bit. Though she denies it, she feels guilty about killing her sister. Her actions brought ruin to her family, which she regrets. She considers it her responsibility to rebuild her house.
Nyssa still likes to boast about the achievements of her ancestors. She has difficulty understanding that this can offend certain individuals, especially those who have suffered under Sith and view the way she discriminates between them as arbitrary. She has somewhat bigoted views about alien races she considers 'weak' or 'decadent', such as Twi'leks, Eldorai or Zeltrons. However, individual feats of bravery can change her opinion. For some obscure reason, she also does not like Selkath. She has formed an unlikely friendship with Rhea, a Rattataki from Tephrike, and has a positive opinion of Qadiri for their martial virtues.
COMBAT INFORMATION
Weapon of Choice: Lightsabre, Sith Sword, the Force.
Combat Function: Nyssa is physically strong, agile and an aggressive fighter. She is a blood knight who prefers leaping into combat head-first, rather than skulking in the shadows or using esoteric techniques. Having been trained as a warrior, she has a tactical mind and knows how to use her environment to her advantage. When angered, she can succumb to a berserk fury. While this empowers her for a short while, it can also easily be used against her. She has a very high pain tolerance, though as her fight with Elpsis shows, this can only go so far if someone has caused your hand to combust. As a Sith warrior, she has been taught to fight dirty. Moreover, she's skilled in hand-to-hand combat. She is proficient in the classical forms of lightsabre combat, with a particular focus on the offensive power of Djem So. In addition, she is also skilled in Juyo. Its focus on offensive and ferocity makes it a good fit her combat philosophy and the way she revels in battle.
However, she is comparatively weak against mental attacks. This worked against her in her duel with Elpsis and a fight with a Dominion Jedi on Tephrike. Nyssa has received some training, but it is still a vulnerability, especially due to her ferocity-based combat style. This can make dealing with illusionists a problem for her. In particular those who use finesse and subtle reality warping instead of brute force mentalism. Nyssa is stubborn, headstrong and prideful. This could be exploited by a canny opponent. Her cybernetic right arm is alchemised, giving it a variety of special traits and making it resistant to lightsabres. Nyssa is able to utilise the Force to debilitate others and to augment her body. She can use ranged weapons, but is not suited for a sniper role.
Force Abilities (Force Users Only): Nyssa is a Sith Warrior with a strong Force connection. She is particularly skilled in physical enhancement to augment her body and control her pain. Moreover, she can use Telekinesis, though she is better at potent short or medium range than at long distance applications, Force Affliction and Force Scream. She is very skilled in Force Rage, Battlemind and Force Body. Her rage and enhancement powers enable her to push her body past its natural limits. Moreover, she has a gift for Sith alchemy, specifically metallurgical alchemy, and can do some sorcery.
Strengths:
- Sith Warrior. Nyssa has is a skilled warrior, very strong and has a strong connection to the Dark Side of the Force. She is a strong offensive fighter and fearless in battle. Her cybernetic hand augments her strength.
- Potent lightsabre duellist, with a talent for Juyo.
- She has received some training to guard her mind, but is still weak against mental attacks. Her rage can also work against her. This is something a canny mentalist or illusionist could use against her, especially if they use finesse rather than brute force mentalism.
- Cybernetic hand is powerful, but susceptible to Force null zones since it is alchemised.
Nyssa was born on Athiss, a haven for Purebloods, as the scion of an old Sith bloodline. Her mother Alia was a powerful Sith Master in her own right, with her own estate, slaves and minions. Aside from Nyssa, she had two other daughters. Alypia was the oldest of the three, while Ghanima was the youngest. The last one was considered to be illegitimate since she'd been fathered by a slave. Nyssa's father Samazya had been a powerful Sith warrior in his prime, but grew indolent as he aged. He was content to pursue the life style of a debauched hedonist. Thus he spent most of his time holding banquets and tournaments, siring bastards and going on hunting trips. His extravagances took a toll on his house's finances. Increasingly, he and his wife began to quarrel as the house's fortunes declined. Growing tired of him, Alia decided to rid herself of her husband. Especially after she heard rumours saying that one of his concubines was urging him to replace her.
Samazya enjoyed forcing slaves to fight to the death in an arena. Sometimes to spice things up, he pit them against ferocious Sithspawn. His passion for gladiatorial combat was such that he sometimes entered the arena himself. It was a convenient way for him to relive his glory days without putting himself at risk. He also made a habit out of fighting exotic animals, such as Sithspawn. However, during one match he was unexpectedly injured when after being hewed down, his opponent struck him with a poisoned blade. It helped that his drink had been spiked.
While he lay in his sick bed, Alia made sure he left it as a dead man. Pinning the blame on his lackeys, she subsequently purged the court of his favourites. This included putting his illegitimate children to death. Nyssa was still a little girl then. The kangaroo courts, grisly executions, which involved alleged traitors being torn apart by wild beasts, and betrayals left their mark on her. She was not only a passive observer, for Alia expected her children to show their mettle by participating. Given a dagger, Nyssa stabbed one of her father's bastards.
Having consolidated her power base, Alia pushed her children to excel. In her own twisted way, she cared for them. There was no room for the weak, and so they had to become strong, ruthless and cunning, if they wished to survive and carry on the bloodline. Sith society was a cutthroat environment and she wanted to prepare them or it. Thus she fostered a competitive spirit in all three. Alypia was undoubtedly her favourite. Strong, cunning, dashing and endowed with a strong connection to the Force, she seemed destined for great things. Standing in her older sister's shadow, Nyssa felt a bit of an inferiority complex, especially once Alypia had graduated from the Sith Academy. For a while, she was close to Ghanima, as both resented the fact that their older sibling was being given favourable treatment compared to them. However, that alliance did not last. At the Academy, Nyssa was taught the ways of the Sith, undergoing the usual trials of a young acolyte. These included lessons in tomb raiding, murder and betrayal. Throwing herself into her training, she embraced the role of a Sith warrior, emulating Alypia. By contrast, Ghanima was a sorceress. Nyssa could not help wonder what lay beyond her homeworld. Sporadic missions to other worlds only left her more curious. As it turned out, she would not have to wait for long, for the Purebloods had decided it was time to reclaim their rightful place in the Galaxy.
The council that ruled Athiss proclaimed the Resurgent Empire. Nyssa was among those Sith who set foot upon their ancestral homeworld of Korriban, conquering it in the name of the new empire. Then the Sith set their eyes upon Dromund Kaas. Here, she acquitted herself well in battle against the Silver Jedi, killing a Jedi in mortal combat. Having been raised on stories about the Sith genocide, she relished the opportunity to do battle against Jedi. However, she was vexed by the fact that she'd been forced to serve under the command of Alypia, who led their house's forces into combat and got most of the glory. When Alypia claimed several of Nyssa's captives as her slaves, the two almost came to blows. Ghanima, who had been unable to participate in the battle, was left with mundane tasks, which only increased her resentment of her two more accomplished siblings.
After Kaas, Nyssa fought Dominion forces on Serenno. The siblings returned to the family estate with trophies and slaves. However, the rift between her and Alypia deepened, as her older sister became more and more secretive. This caused Nyssa to suspect that she might be plotting against her. In actual fact, the truth was a lot more shocking. For many years, Alypia had been playing a double game. Outwardly, she had been devoted to the Dark Side, but in secret she turned away from the Sith Code and embraced the Light. For many years, she had kept up the act while subtly trying to do good in small ways and plot her own coup. When confronted, Alypia denied that she'd become an apostate, claiming that she wanted to lead their house to glory by using the best of both worlds. Using her powers of persuasion, she stressed that there would be a place for Nyssa in her regime. The Pureblood seemed to back down and agree.
The day came for the coup to be launched...and it turned out to have been a huge ruse. Far from wanting to overthrow clan matriarch Alia, Alypia had been plotting with her. The entire rift had been a con to get the hardcore darksiders to reveal themselves so that they could be converted, disposed of or exiled, enabling the family to go to the light side. When Nyssa discovered that she'd been played, she was furious. Refusing to forsake her old beliefs, she fled. Determined to avenge herself on her duplicitous family members, she gathered her remaining loyalists, but they were few in number. So she took the step of allying herself with her family's old rivals, House Karishax, which had long been publicly scorned by the Vykaris for having 'impure blood'.
Things came to head during the civil war that marked the end of the Resurgent Empire. Both clans met in the battle and the results were disastrous. Nyssa slew Alypia in combat, but her older sister's parting words proved to be prophetic. As Alypia had predicted, it would all end in darkness and ruin, leaving Nyssa without the power she craved. In the end, that's exactly what happened. Her revenge would turn out to be hollow, especially when her allies turned on her. She was left without power, family or friends. In short, it was a hollow victory.
Pillaging what resources she could, she allied with a group of Sith raiders, cultists and corsairs who had set their eye upon a world called Anderahl. The planet was experiencing a power vacuum, and had no powerful protector or patron. Moreover, there were rumours of a powerful Sith artefact. Intending to take it for herself and slay the cult leader, Nyssa joined their campaign. Unfortunately, things did not as planned. First Taryc Ap'Irae, an Inquisitor in the service of Firemane, killed their leader, causing the rest of the cult to chase her. Then her partner Elpsis and the Dathomiri witch Maiev came to her aid, slaying several cultists.
During the fight, Nyssa engaged Elpsis in a furious duel. She managed to sneak up on the empath and get the drop on her. Quickly the Pureblood put the witch on the defensive with her superior lightsabre skills, hammering through her defences. However, when she seemed overpowered, Elpsis launched a powerful pyromantic assault, causing Nyssa's hand to combust. Then she assaulted her with a combination of pyromancy and Force illusions. Beaten, Nyssa was taken prisoner rather than slain out of hand. Naturally, the three ladies were smart enough to adequately restrain her first. When she awoke, she found herself aboard Elpsis' tramp freighter. Much to her annoyance, she was stuck inside a box. Her attempts to free herself from captivity turned out to be futile, and so she was subjected to interrogation. To her surprise, she was not tortured.
Rather they treated her with kindness, though with some severity. In short, tough love. It turned out that Taryc had her own history with the Dark Side as an Inquisitor in the service of the Primeval's Gods, while Elpsis' father had been a sadistic Sith Lord. Nyssa learned of the latter when Elpsis forcibly melded minds with her. Conflicted, she told the gang of three what she knew about the remnants of the cult - and the artefact they sought. Though she initially intended to simply manipulate her captors into getting rid of the competition so that she could claim the device for herself, in the end she decided to join them for real. Though she had trouble admitting it, their words and actions resonated with her, though she still clung to many of her old values.
Nyssa has accompanied Elpsis on several adventures, including a trip to Maena. There they made the acquaintance of the Heralds of Xoth-xa and their High Priestess Rael Rus. Elpsis discussed religion with Rael and taught young Heralds a few tricks. However, the lesson was interrupted by an attack of the Ejaer, a group of primordial beings that possessed great strength in the Force, especially in the field of terramancy and physical enhancement. Nyssa and Elpsis decided to aid the Heralds, supporting them in the defence of the Temple. Nyssa later called the fight the biggest fun she'd had in ages, though she lost her cybernetic arm in a duel with one of the attackers. Later the dynamic duo helped Maiev recover some Dathomiri artefacts on Nar Shaddaa.
She also participated in the Firemane expedition to Tephrike. Despite being treated with distrust from some members of Firemane, she proved to be effective, reliable and brave under fire. When Elpsis was captured by extremists in the Jedi-led Dominion of Light, a theocratic government Firemane had tried to negotiate with, Nyssa dedicated herself to finding and rescuing her friend - or avenging her if need be. It gave her a very personal stake in Firemane's campaign. Though originally assigned to Firemane's retaliatory strike force, she volunteered for a task force that was supposed to track down and rescue Elpsis.
Her friend was in danger, after all. She joined a unit led by Major Tempest, which had been charged with finding and rescuing Elpsis - or avenging her if need be. She became acquainted with Kira Ul, a Captain in the Resistance squad that accompanied the Firemane troops. She also ran into Natalie Dorne, Elpsis' rebel friend from Ession. They were joined by a force of Firemane's Dahomian and Qadiri soldiers.
The team's first stop was the so-called Liberation Education Centre, a brainwashing camp for anyone the Dominion considered impure. This was not where Elpsis was being held, but it was the biggest Dominion re-education centre with a lot of records, a lot of people to question and a good chance of finding people high up. In short, it was a follow the dots game. The principal assault team consisted of the Dahomians and the Qadiri. They attacked the camp's two entrances in the north and south. Meanwhile, Natalie was dropped off and stealthily approached the facility from the west to blow a hole in the wall. At one point she had to hide in what turned out to be a mass grave to evade a Dominion patrol. The Essionian had the self-control to focus on the mission rather than lashing out. But it made her see the Dominion as just as heinous as the Sith. She managed to complete her task, allowing Tempest, Kira and Nyssa to penetrate the facility.
Tempest and Nyssa engaged Jedi Inquisitors in duels. Nyssa seemingly defeated her opponent, only for it to be revealed that she had bested an illusion. The real Jedi Inquisitor assaulted her mentally, torturing her. Afflicted with sickness, Nyssa managed to use her rage to break free, unleashing a powerful Force Scream. Then she struck the Jedi down. Meanwhile, Kira and Natalie wreaked havoc in other ways. Natalie used a microgrenade launcher to unleash nerve gas on Dominion troops, while Kira drove some prisoners rabid with a drug called Berserk and employed Blood Boiler and paralysing darts to take out guards. Once the team managed to penetrate the admin compound, Natalie sliced into the Inquisition's computers to acquire crucial data. Nyssa suffered a bullet wound and Kira was severely injured, but the team managed to get what was needed. Surviving prisoners and Dominion functionaries were evacuated by the task force. Few Dominion minions were taken captive, as the most fanatical fought to the death. The rescued inmates received medical attention from Firemane medics. Many took the chance to try and avenge themselves on their former tormentors.
After Natalie had been able to locate the camp Elpsis was being held in through her slicing skills, the task force launched an attack. However, they were blocked by Dominion troops, who used barges loaded with explosives to attack them. Tempest was momentarily thrown into a daze when she sensed Elpsis' presence. The empath had broken free from her brainwashing and was causing havoc in the camp, but also in pain. Nyssa helped her snap out of it. Taking her place among the Firemane soldiers, the Pureblood bombarded approaching Dominion troops with a shattercannon. Then she clashed with a Jedi warrior on top of a tank. She was injured during the fight, but her rage gave her strength. Utilising the Juyo form, she was able to penetrate the Jedi's defences and stab him. Then she slammed his skull against the tank's turrets until he stopped moving.
Finally, the Firemane task force was able to storm the camp. There Nyssa reunited with Elpsis, who had been able to slaughter the guards with the help of rebellious prisoners and two Jedi who had defected to her side. However, the torture that had been inflicted upon her left Elpsis with deep physical and mental scars. In recognition for her efforts, Nyssa was given an officer's commission and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. This has made her a full member of the Order of Fire. However, she intended to rise high in the ranks. At the same time she is trying to help Elpsis recover from her ordeal.
She views Diona, a defector from Dominion's Inquisition with distrust, because while the Jedi helped Elpsis escape, she was also her jailer and stood by while the girl was being tortured and brainwashed. This makes her particularly heinous in Nyssa's view. Admittedly Nyssa tried to kill Elpsis as well, but she sees this as different because it was in honest combat. Elpsis decided to spare the former Jedi and make her do penance because she sensed that Diona wanted death and that forcing her to live with her own guilt was more of a punishment. Nyssa disagreed strongly with this decision, but at the same time was pleased to see Elpsis asserting herself.
When Elpsis was put in command of one of the Order of Fire's training platoons, Nyssa was assigned to the unit to assist her with training and leadership. She later followed Elpsis to the Forge, a patrol station that serves as a boot camp for Firemane. Although Nyssa often complained about her charges not measuring up to her exacting standards, she has become somewhat attached to them, albeit in an abrasive way. She has participated in a number of combat missions with them, such as operations against First Order Remnant groups in the western rim. Nyssa still aims to restore her house, though she has lost touch with its surviving members. Little does she know that her half-sister Ghanima is still at large and watching her. In contrast to Nyssa, Ghanima has embraced the Light and is now part of a group of lightsided Pureblood outcasts.
