Private Old Dog, Newish Tricks

Captain Pal Veda. Smuggler, bounty hunter, rebel. He had done a little bit of everything over the years.

Pal had favored the blaster pistol since he was young, training on the Bounty Hunter’s Moon. He was just a kid then, and the blaster was the equalizer. Of course they periodically made him put the gun down and learn how to fight on his feet and, more importantly, on the ground. What set his training apart from the traditional bounty hunter was his teachers. There was the pseudo-Mandalorian Dreyas, an advanced lifelike droid with an artificial intelligence that mimicked human thinking nearly perfectly. Pracid Trip, formerly known as Jedi Master Prasad, a gray Force user who grew discontent with the Jedi Order and sought to make a name for himself in a less reputable, but much more profitable, profession. And of course the actual Mandalorians. Dreyas favored heavy melee weapons — a vibro-axe being one of his favorites — in no doubt due to his robotic strength. Pracid escaped the Temple with his lightsaber and never hesitated to use it when confronting a Jedi or Sith target. That is all to say that Pal Veda was no stranger to hand-to-hand combat using a variety of staffs, swords, and axes, and he had even attempted to wield a lightsaber from time to time.

That seemed like a lifetime ago. Now in his mid-thirties — wait, really? — he knew those skills were rusty at best. He could outdraw Cad Bane and wrestle a gundark, and he stayed in about the best shape a man in his profession could manage. But a lightsaber in close proximity could spell the end for him. After one hell of a mission with Valery Noble to shut down a slavery ring out of Corellia, he had begrudgingly asked her for help to ready him for the inevitable encounters he would have with Sith as part of his contract work for the Alliance (and beyond). Once she finished laughing, she had made the call to set up this meeting with her fellow Jedi Master Jonyna Si Jonyna Si , the new Sentinel of Harmony at the Jedi Order.

So here he stood, in an off-site Jedi training facility, changing into some sort of training jumpsuit, readying himself for the pain that would soon come his way.

Moments like this caused Jonyna to tense up. A smuggler, asking for training on how to deal with Force Users?

She hadn't had to deal with that since her last run in with Han Solo. When she had ran into him, she had only given him a few pointers. Strike first, shoot first. That was all she could offer the famed quickshot in the moment. She doubted it did him any good against someone like Vader.

But now?

She had a lot more to offer.

The woman stood in nothing but the jade and silk top she wore normally under her coat, and a pair of gym pants she normally kept on the Reaper. Her claws poked out of her fingers with a shine that would normally be kept hidden, and the same poked out of her specially made boots. Today, she'd teach the man a simple lesson.

"So, you wanna take on a sith?" She asked, as if that was a dumb idea to begin with. It was, especially for someone like him. "Show me what you got already."

The rock solid Cathar entered the gym knowing she had the upper hand. Pal could read it on her, and her immediate challenge to show her what he’s got confirmed it. Made sense. She was a well-trained Jedi, and he was a gunslinging captain standing there with no blaster and no ship. Advantage: Master Si.

In truth, he wasn’t all that eager to go Sith hunting. He was more eager to stay alive when the Sith came hunting for him. Especially now that he’d helped the Alliance down the Predator over Coruscant. The Dark Empire would never let him get away with that. But being more dangerous couldn’t hurt.

Should I just go for it? Master Si had feline reflexes amplified by the Force. She would be faster, quicker, more agile, every adjective in the galactic thesaurus. Move in slow, try to wrestle? He could typically hold his own in a scrap, a muscular six-four with a bit of grappling and close-quarters-combat experience.

Well do something. You look like an idiot. Pal approached cautiously, hands up, slightly crouched, feet light but balanced. The claws were intimidating. Once in striking range, he would need to clear no-man’s land quickly to try to tangle her up. Maybe, just maybe, he could tie her up and take control, then move to some sort of takedown from there. Now or never. Pal pushed in, bringing a strong right paw toward the left side of the Jedi’s head, hoping to grab the back of her neck for a collar tie.

His hesitation was apparent.

First lesson.

In a blinding movement, she threw her hold body up, wrapping her legs around his right arm, and using her whole weight to bring him down. "Lesson one, don't hesitate. Hesitate and you're dead. Act decisively."

Pal tapped immediately, knowing better than to let his pride lead to torn ligaments five seconds into training. Once Jonyna released, he did a backward roll and came to his feet. “Lesson one,” he repeated, holding back his frustration.

She was right. In the field, he rarely hesitated. Didn’t think much about his next move when there wasn’t time. Just kind of acted on instinct. Of course that had almost gotten him killed more times than he could count. Almost being the key word.

Different approach. Knowing Jonyna was ready to proceed — she was up quicker than he was — Pal lunged forward, foregoing the typical upper body grappling and diving straight for the double-leg takedown.

She could realistically drive circles around this guy. Not from youthful exuberance, but through pure biology. Cathar musculature gave her the advantage, but she needed to teach this guy better. As soon as he dove at her, she leapt into the air, over him and into a roll to halt her momentum.

He'd need to be quicker. Those strong in the Force has a level of precognition that allowed them to survive blaster bolts. If someone like him were to face down a Sith Lord, he'd need to catch them off guard. Keep them on their toes.

"Faster!"
She called out, challenging him to move again.

Missing the double leg, Pal hit the ground with his hands, springing into a flying somersault. He spun midair, turning his body back to face his opponent, then shifted his momentum, immediately lunging again once his feet touched down.

Not really. That all would have been very cool, but Pal Veda is no gymnast.

No, Pal‘s movements were less Jedi feline and more partially trained human. He instead landed on his knees, used his hands to quickly push himself back to standing, angling to make sure his back was exposed for as short of a time as possible. He at least knew better than that. Faster! came the command, and he obeyed. He launched forward, this time maneuvering for a body lock, having previously failed both going high and going low, all the while being mindful of exposing himself to strikes on his way in.

Jonyna's response was simple.

She brought her hand up, and while she didn't draw her saber, she held it up as if she was holding one anyways, pointing it right at Pal's chest.

"And you're dead. Stabbed to death by a sith lord. Lesson two. Go for the arms. Disarm, then grapple."

Pal stopped in his tracks, then clutched his chest with both hands and threw his head back, feigning being stabbed. “You know, it would be easier to disarm if I had something to disarm with,” he commented. Those damn laser swords were annoying. Useless from afar, but pretty difficult to overcome when things get personal. That’s why he liked to fill that gap with as much blaster fire and as many slugs as he could.

”Alright, alright . . .” He gathered his posture and took a few steps back, then charged again, trying to cut to the left as if the Jedi held a lightsaber in her right hand. Pal would want to grab for the outer right wrist with his right hand and push inward so he could move his body safely around Jonyna’s pretend lightsaber and try to lock the arm from behind. That seemed better than grabbing the inside of her wrist with his left hand, risking the stronger Cathar simply pulling him inside, breaking his grip, and taking advantage of him there.

Solid plan, right? Well, he’d see how it would work in action . . .

It seemed the work, at least getting Jonyna's arm pinned behind her...

Until she pushed back with the Force. It was a light push, enough to get her arm unpinned, but it certainly wasn't enough to knock him on his ass. "Next lesson. Don't let up. Once you have me pinned, keep me moving. Keep me on the backfoot. A sith will throw everything at you they can, lightning, darkspears, anything they have. Don't give them the chance."

She had a point. Sith lightening was nasty business. He’d had the unfortunate experience of seeing a Jedi fried to death in battle. That was an outcome he definitely wanted to avoid.

Pal regained his footing, thankful his instructor was nice enough not to blast him into the wall across the room but instead simply remind him she had the power to do so. So would his opponents. Then again, this is where he’d pull out his IB-94 and take a few shots, using the distance to his advantage. That wasn’t today’s lesson, though.

”That’s one thing that scares me about you folks,” Pal said, bouncing up and down on his toes, keeping the blood flowing, resetting for the next run. “Everything is a fight to the death. I’m not a stranger to danger, but it’s almost like the Jedi and Sith only fight to kill.“ He knew that may not always be the case with the lightsiders, that oftentimes they were only matching the violence of their mortal enemies, and they did show restraint when they could — or at least some of the Jedi did.

Shaking his head, ready to go again, Pal stepped into a neutral stance and considered his next move. He repeated his prior attack, coming in for Jonyna’s right wrist with his right hand, this time planting his left foot behind her right when angling around, hoping to gain control of the lightsaber arm while setting up a trip should she step back for balance or to counter.

"The sith sure do. Jedi...we do our best to disable. Disarm. Force a surrender. But a good jedi, a smart jedi, won't hesitate if they're forced to kill." Jonyna said with a firmness on that last part. "I'm admittedly an exception to the rule. I'm like Val, a woman out of her own time. I grew up when the first Empire was at it's height, and I didn't have the choice. Stormtroopers, Inquisitors, it didn't matter. I was a rebel first, and a jedi second."

At first, Jonyna didn't seem to do anything different, but instead of allowing him to trip her, she brought her legs up in a rather impressive display of flexibility, wrapping it around the barrel of his chest, and rolling into the trip while using her massive legs to throw Pal right across the room once more. She wouldn't make this easy.

Still, he had achieved his goal.

She had dropped her saber.

Pal hit the ground hard, luckily absorbing most of the impact with a bit of a roll. Not graceful, but it’ll do. He barely noticed his attack had been somewhat successful, at least right up until he was tossed across the room.

The Jedi’s comments were interesting. A rebel first. He could absolutely relate. Pal had fought for the Rebellion for a time, actually on two different occasions. That was back when he believed in something. Back when he thought they could make a difference. Maybe they had, for a while. But when one Empire is weakened, another grows. He still had a soft spot for underdogs that he couldn’t shake, but he’d mostly turned to helping himself first these days. Mostly.

Pal wiped the sweat from his forehead and planned the next play. He knew better than to try the same move again. Maybe try an idea he’d rejected previously, just to see how exactly Jonyna would counter. He came at her again, this time grabbing for the lightsaber wrist with his left hand, attempting to push her right arm up and away while being cognizant of where the imaginary blade would be relative to his body and, more importantly, his face. At the same time, he attempted to come in with his right hand for a collar tie, hoping to weight Jonyna down on her left side and gain control of her body. Of course that wouldn’t be so easy with a three-hundred-pound ball of muscle opposite of him.

His next play seemed to work, sending the cathar to the ground, as she struggled to keep her left side up. "Keep-...it up!" She roared as she attempted to break free, using both her legs and tail to push herself up, and lift him with her into a side-slam.

It was inelegant, brutal, but potentially effective. Then again, any bastard crazy enough to try this on a sith would have other problems to worry about...
