Life in the Outer Rim is harsh and unforgiving. Planets are wild, untamed, and uncharted. Flora and fauna can be deadlier than any bounty hunter. Hyperlanes are patrolled by pirates and slavers. Despite the odds against them -or perhaps in spite of them, even- the League of Autonomous Worlds works tirelessly to develop a stronger, safer nation for its people. It does so through the efforts of two civilian enterprises: the Outer Rim Development Corps (ORDC) and the Spacers Alliance.

OUTER RIM DEVELOPMENT CORPS

The Outer Rim Development Corps (ORDC) plays a crucial role in the expansion and sustainability of League space by taking on the challenging work of exploring and developing new frontier worlds. Their operations are multifaceted and involve deploying survey teams, scanner probes, and communications buoys to gather critical data on uncharted territories. These survey teams are equipped with the latest technology to meticulously evaluate the habitability and resource potential of planets.
One of the key responsibilities of the ORDC is to assess both new and existing planets for various threat levels, including environmental hazards, potential hostile life forms, and other risks that could endanger future inhabitants. This thorough assessment process involves a combination of on-site exploration and remote sensing, utilizing advanced scanner probes that can penetrate deep into planetary atmospheres and surfaces. By identifying these threats early, the ORDC helps to create safer environments for future colonists and ensures that resources are allocated efficiently for sustainable development. In addition to their exploration and assessment duties, the ORDC also produces educational materials to prepare future colonists for life on new worlds. These materials cover a wide range of topics, from survival skills and local environmental conditions to cultural integration and community building. By providing comprehensive learning resources, the ORDC not only equips colonists with the knowledge they need to thrive but also fosters a sense of preparedness and resilience among those who will ultimately call these frontier worlds home.
For existing settlements, ORDC’s responsibilities shift from novel exploration to practical development. Assisting in the construction of new structures and facilities, integration of automated defense and security systems, and establishing infrastructural connections between local communities and the League are essential elements of ORDC activity on worlds that are already members of the LAW or those which possessed settlements prior to becoming a member.
Common specialties and assignments in the ORDC include: colonists, agriculturalists, pastoralists, engineers, environmentalists, logisticians, scientists, geologists, and xenobiologists.

SPACERS ALLIANCE

The Spacers Alliance is a nomadic cadre of free merchants, traders, freighters, smugglers, and pilots who have struck out together to seek a life of freedom and prosperity among the stars. Since the early days of the former Rimward Trade League, merchant mariners have long been a cornerstone of stability and fair trade in the Outer Rim. Most anyone with their own ship and decent aim can enlist in the Alliance.
Central to the Alliance's efforts are mercantile negotiations and the establishment of robust trade networks between League worlds. These activities are typically managed by founding Trade Authority outposts, strategically placed on member worlds or aboard space stations. These outposts serve as hubs of economic activity, where traders and merchants converge to exchange goods, negotiate deals, and forge partnerships. The presence of these outposts not only stimulates local economies but also enhances the overall economic integration of the League, making it a more cohesive and prosperous entity.
Spacer picket fleets, defense flotillas, and starfighter squadrons are common sights along the dozens of trade routes that crisscross LAW space. While not as robust as the Civil Defense Force's navy, the Spacer fleets are dedicated to providing comprehensive security along League hyperlanes. The Alliance works diligently to ensure safe passage for all foster an environment of trust and cooperation between its members and the citizens of the League. They cooperate and coordinate with local Rimward Ranger precincts and, occasionally, with ORION field agents to track and eliminate pirates and mercenary bands that may threaten civilians.
Common specialties and assignments in the Spacers Alliance include: pilots, freighters, merchants, traders, mercenaries, scouts, and smugglers.
