The Outback-class is a bold new step for the Kathol Republic Navy. It is Kathol's first independently designed and manufactured military craft. With greater access to OPA experts on worlds like Sullust and Sluis Van the Republic has made recent advances in their sublight engine program. Cheap and fuel efficient Kathol fusial engines are nevertheless primitive and thus extremely prone to malfunction. The corvette itself is a general purpose patrol ship and can fit in everywhere from fleet support to deep space scouting to mundane customs inspections. It is the Marauder's little cousin and exists in a nebulous state between light corvette and heavy gunship that could only be relevant to a dwarf navy like the Kathol Republic's.
Reliant on heavy bulkhead plating over out of reach advanced shield technology, internal spacing is at a premium and the average Outback only requires around a dozen able crewman to operate with skeleton crews of even less. Instead of typical corridors the ship's layout is connected by crawl ways and service tunnels. It is for this reason and its versatility that the vessel has also become a popular choice for local law enforcement and even a few freelancers who have earned high standing with the Navy.
