A living biological entity - the Overlord class Cruiser - is a cruiser style biological vessels used as a personal transport by the Blood Queen to move between worlds and unleash the blood brood upon those worlds. It is capable of surviving both in the void of space - due to its special chitinous carapace - as well as surviving in the atmosphere of most worlds. As it is a living entity that the Blood Queen can communicate with, it requires no crew to "pilot".

The vessel utilizes a technology similar to that of the Yuuzhan Vong - including an organ within that resembles the Dovial Basins used to access what the Vong called "Dark Space" - otherwise known as Hyperspace to the rest of the galaxy. As the vessel is designated or rather grown for the purpose of transport, it lacks in many instances in terms of weaponry - having only enough to defend itself against weaker vessels and relying upon the biological starfighters that it carries in its hangers. Much of its focus is on internal space - to carry starfighters and passengers - and defensive capabilities - as seen by its thick and hardened carapace.

In order to ensure that it is capable of communicating with the Blood Queen, the Overlord class Cruiser taps into a similar telepathic field that is shared by the Brood - though this field is only capable of relaying simplistic thoughts such as "travel here", "stop", "go", etc etc - and is incapable of relaying complex thoughts or emotions.
