PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Owlen is a Caucasian male standing at 1.72 meters and weighing between 72 and 73 Kg depending on the day. While he maintains decent shape, some of this weight is doubtless because of a culinary appreciation going back to his childhood. All in all, to the untrained eye he likely appears to be as strong as any other average individual, but a more trained eye would notice the absence of real musculature along his upper body, with far greater strength in the lower allowing him to run much better than he will ever lift. Owlen possesses light brown hair, with streaks of grey on his temples which have been dutifully dyed whenever they are visible for more than a day or two. Owlen has blue eyes and slender curving eyebrows, typically manicured. His sharp nose contrasts with gaunt thin cheeks to give him an almost hawkish appearance.

Owlen tends to wear Imperial officer's regalia and equipment wherever possible, choosing clothing that is primarily militant in its appearance. The only civilian wear he will adopt is that typical for outdoorsmen or hunters such as camouflage or thick steel-toed boots, and these only when he is not on business. The clothing is almost always finely pressed and ironed and seems to be given very meticulous care. He wears no jewelry beyond a simple wedding band.

His average resting face is dour and disappointed, and gives the impression of being a canker sore of a man; a correct interpretation by all accounts.

PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS

Owlen is a firm believer in Imperialism as being the shining beacon upon which true peace and prosperity can be built. He strives constantly to do his part in this great scheme in the hopes that his efforts will one day be rewarded and that he will be able to enjoy a significant portion of the very prosperity that he is building. He believes that the weak have events happen to them, but that the strong choose their actions and it is therefore important to do everything one can in order to be strong enough to decide their fate and that of others.

He is lacking significantly in compassion, but will occasionally perform deeds of altruism in order to convince himself that he is still doing things for the right reasons and that he is fundamentally a good person in spite of the evil deeds he is willing to commit. A prolific spender, he is popular among hangers-on and vagrants and enjoys the company of sycophants and persons who are less-well-off than himself as he believes that a real man has followers and disciples.

Owlen, being from an agricultural background, believes that the herd must be culled from time to time in order to keep it strong and stable and that it is beneficial for the galaxy to "churn the soil" in order to guarantee that there is always an influx of strong leaders and warriors. He views himself as one of these brave few who will make a difference in the galaxy.

Owlen is a follower of many machismo philosophies and strives always to be viewed as a strongman by his peers and relatives. He allows himself very few deviations from this path, and only when they are well-recognized traditional deviations; giving a hug to his daughter from time to time, for example.

STRENGTHS

  • Mathematician - Owlen is a talented mathematician with an appreciation for calculus, geometry, algebra, and other forms of arithmetic. He has learned to make complex calculations in his head in only a few moments and utilizes this well when determining logistical shortfalls, artillery targets, and even cost/benefit analyses.
  • Culinary Arts - Owlen is an able cook and has spent a significant amount of free time learning about the various culinary techniques of a hundred cultures and worlds. He can make a meal out of almost anything edible and has learned to correctly identify the vintage of many beverages within a small margin.
  • Oppressor - Years of practice in training, in the field, and at home have made Owlen a capable oppressor. He has a good feel for exactly what will break the spirits and what will motivate soldiers and civilians alike to perform certain actions. He uses this talent to maintain a close grip on his assigned units and to garner authority and fear for his position if not genuine respect.
  • Quickdraw - In the pursuit of a machismo appearance, Owlen has learned to very rapidly draw small blasters and single-hand firearms and to accurately fire them with a barrage of shots. This is most applicable in shorter ranges and he does not possess an equal talent with long blasters and the extreme ranges often found on battlefields.

WEAKNESSES

  • Self-Worth Deadbeat - Owlen has attached a significant degree of self-worth to his imperialistic and authoritarian ideals and believes that he is only worthy of attention and respect when he is performing these duties to his utmost. As a result of this, he feels obligated to defend imperialism both in debate and in conflict and can be led around by manipulators as a result.
  • Shaky Hands - While Owlen has worked hard on his quickdraw, any kind of prolonged engagement where he is shooting and being shot at has a bad habit of giving him shaky hands as his nerves begin to catch up to him. He's not totally inaccurate, but there's a definite decline in performance that can be overtaken by skilled combatants.
  • Loyal Dog - Given an objective and a goal, Owlen is capable of fulfilling the mission or finding ways around problems. Left to his own devices, however, he swiftly becomes caught up in decision paralysis, striving constantly for more information. Owlen is only ever a leader when there's a bigger leader telling him what to do.
  • Inconsistent Threat Analysis - Owlen believes that the threats to empire and order are numerous, constantly present, and lurking in every insidious shadow... but also that they're lurking in every shadow because they're weak and too cowardly to do anything... except when their wild machinations come to fruition in nigh constant plotting against his righteous cause... which is destined to succeed because they're so weak. Owlen is more likely to believe that someone from another world is a spy than someone actually caught holding critical information in the middle of a secured vault because he secretly believes both that his enemies are powerful and weak and struggles to decide which is which.

HISTORY

Owlen is a native of Lianna, though he grew up along the outskirts of an agricultural community as opposed to the thriving commercial centers and urban cities that now seem to populate the world. As a child, he was taught regularly about the ills and wiles of Republican thought and the necessity to become a commanding figure and one who could make a difference. Given the opportunity, he quickly associated himself with youth programs which served to further indoctrinate him into the role of being a future Imperial.

Without a mother in his life, Owlen grew exclusively under the watchful eye of his domineering father whose addiction to a number of illicit drugs introduced Owlen to their effects and to the slimy criminal underworld. He grew to see hypocrisy in his father's actions and began to feel as if though he were nothing but a weakness growing in the shadow of what could one day be a flourishing empire. Owlen has never regretted reporting his own father to law enforcement, though obviously his extended stay in government-sponsored orphanages did little to curb his already negative traits.

Owlen later joined the armed forces and began to rise steadily through its ranks as a result of skillful calculation and a willingness to volunteer himself for efforts that were deemed undesirable by many of his peers. When he had achieved the rank of Sergeant, he met his future wife Lita and they married only a year later. Two children came shortly thereafter, two sons, and Owlen took up their training and indoctrination in what he considered to be the proper path for young men.

One of the boys, Artur, later joined his father in the armed forces, and through some political string-pulling was brought under his own unit. This later led to devastation when what was meant to be a simple clean-up operation of some piratical elements led to the death of the boy. This sank Owlen into a morbid mood from whence he has never recovered, and his increasingly abusive tendencies led to his only remaining child abandoning home.

Owlen later had another child in the hopes of "cleaning up the mistake of his progeny" and to "soothe the womanly emotions of Lita" but his daughter did little to assuage his troubled conscience and he continued to grow increasingly agitated with her failures to live up to the memory of his militant son. Outside of his personal life, Owlen continued to thrive in the armed forces of the Empire of the Lost, gradually achieving a rank that allowed him command, and began to make a name for himself as an officer of that polity, striving to bring true imperialism back to what he considers to be a far too liberal government.
