Padawan Beatdown, Cotarin Edition

Haytham Kaze

Judge, Judgury, Judgecutioner
Haytham knew of several Padawans throughout the Jedi Order, whether through their few social interactions, or just of hearing about them, he had found out about their existence.

As a Jedi who learned from hands-on training, Haytham wanted to further his own training without having to impose on the Masters and Knights. In times of war, they were needed elsewhere, and helping every Padawan Learner that wanted something wasn't going to help them win the war.

Besides, he had learned quite a few things from other Jedi Padawans when it came to lightsabre training, so why shouldn't he learn more from his peers?

His comlink was already on, and he selected the first Padawan that came to mind and entered in their frequency.

:: I'm Padawan Kaze. Duel in one week Galactic Standard Time. Wherever you choose, I'll be there. ::

::What better place than Ossus. Dueling circles, mid morning in one week. I'll see you there.:: Dair replied. He enjoyed dueling other padawans, it always gave him something else to work on as everyone had slightly different styles. Dair was looking forward to meeting Padawan Kaze.

One Week Later
Ossus

Dair stepped into the dueling circle. He was clothed in his normal jedi outfit, without the drooping outer robe. He had winter attached to his belt, but made no move to grab it. He was a bit early for the duel, and he wanted the chance to meditate a little bit. The fights of Telti, Zeltros and Antar still rang in his memories. He had been very busy in the last few weeks and felt like he needed some serious rest. Maybe it was time to go back to Voss and see about getting a tour of his home planet...these were all things to think about after the duel.

Dair focused his mind, he slid deep into the icy pool that was his center and waited for Kaze to show up. He worked to clear his mind as he had been taught for so many years.

One Week Later.
Ossus.

He had arrived on Ossus a few hours ahead of his duel timing. He wanted to explore Osuss, a temple that he didn't frequent as much as Ruusan. If one were to be his home, it'd certainly be Ruusan. The place where he met his Master, and many other Masters that had taught him plenty about the Jedi and lightsabre forms.

Besides, if he wasn't training early morning he was running around whatever temple he was staying at to keep up his stamina. There was always a need for improvement, especially after Telti. After his duel with Darth Raven, the young Padawan knew that he was going to have to be in better shape to face stronger opponents.

Although, he did have the pride and a handful of scars to prove that his duel had occurred. Not to mention the lightsabre that he had taken off of the Sith Knight.

...

Haytham walked slowly to the dueling circles. At mid morning there were many classes that would be starting or ending, and Haytham knew there probably wouldn't be that many people around. Glancing over the area, he took note of a single person and he knew they were meditating. You could always tell when their mind was focused, as if they were privy to a clearer view of the world... So he descended the steps from the Temple to the dueling circles.

...

"[member="Dair Cotarin"]?" He questioned softly, as his slow gait took him to his destination. In his temporary chambers, he had left his outer robe, so he wouldn't be able to employ his dual lightsabre trick where his secondary weapon slid out of his sleeve for a surprise attack. It wasn't that much of a bother, best to not show all of your tricks. In hindsight, Haytham wondered if he would've actually slayed Darth Raven at Telti instead of capturing her, and then losing her all within a few minutes.

Haytham's gaze focused on the other Padawan with a mix of curiosity and apathy. Few times, were his 'apathetic bait' taken, and when they were, needless to say he'd be amused...

A duel? Like, between two students? With lightsabers?

Evan had overheard a rumor last night that two students agreed to meet up at a dueling ring that the Ossus Temple apparently had and thought it would be a nice experience to go and watch. After all, he had never seen two lightsaber-wielding opponents spar before, and if he was going to be one of them, he may as well see what it looks like.

They're jedi students like myself. Maybe they're so fast, the duels are like a big lightshow. That would be AWESOME!

Aside from the duel possibly looking cool, Evan might learn a thing or two from watching his fellow students spar.

So there he went, waking up in the early morn before class to go and watch two students duel. He slowly poked his head into the room with the dueling rings. He spotted two bodies, one appeared to be meditating in the center of a circle, and the other one, who looked quite edgy and dark for a jedi, Evan thought, was standing nearby looking at him. Evan hoped he had not been seen as he quietly tip-toed over around the edge of the room, sat down, and pulled his datapad out. He tapped on a few icons and whispered to the datapad's AI: "Record video". A tiny, holographic camera popped off the screen and started to record the dueling circle.

A few minutes after Dair had begun meditating, he felt the presence of someone approaching him. It was a fairly busy campus, so he didn't open his eyes and stand until the man spoke. Then Dair stood and opened his eyes, greeting the other padawan with a smile.

"I am. I take it that you are Haytham Kaze?" He offered his hand to shake. Dair noticed the other padawan with a camera and offered a nod and small wave before turning back to his sparring partner for the day. "I have to say that I have been looking forward to this all week. I don't get to spar new people very much."

There were only a few abilities that Haytham trained himself in. One of those were to sense new presences in his proximity. So when, [member="Evan Kenner"] thought he was stealthily moving into a spectator position, he tried his best to find him in his peripherals, but with no luck he stopped bothering and focused his gaze back onto Cotarin.

When he deduced as to who he was, he inclined his head forward as if to greet him, but then he extended his hand as well, and so Haytham shook it. It wasn't something that he usually did, but it was best to not be so rude to your peers, right?

"You can learn a lot from your peers." He left it at that, and his left hand dropped down to his waistline and grasped one of the lightsabres located there. It felt the lightsabre that he had first made, and with an index and middle finger he pushed on the ignition button, and the blue beam ushered forth with the familiar woosh sound.

Slipping into the makashi salute, once it was completed he dropped into a ready stance.

Evan found himself grinning at how cool it looked. A jedi igniting his lightsaber, the signature of the jedi, practically a jedi's other half, and standing at the ready to fight. Yeah, i'm pretty happy i'm here. I'm gonna do wicked cool stuff like that someday.

He looked down at his datapad and made sure it was still recording. He knew he was gonna watch this duel more than a few times.

Dair returned the salute, then set himself into a Djem So ready stance. His lightsaber, Winter, was held above his head in a high guard. His legs were slightly less than shoulder width apart, the right leg about two feet in front of the left one with knees deeply bent. He paused for only a moment to make sure that his opponent was ready. After the moment passed, he pushed forward in a direct charge at Haytham. While the charge would look wild, Dair made sure to keep his feet under him and keeping his center of gravity low. He feinted a slash at Haythams neck, but at the last second he ducked his head and shoulders into a shoulder roll to Haythams right side, Winter licking out to try to strike at Haythams knee as Dair rolled past.

Whether the attack hits, Dair's next move would be to come to his feet from the roll and turn, saber held in a defensive stance, though that is purely dependent on Haytham's actions during Dair's attack.

The duel started.

Haytham wasted no time in reacting. After his Soresu training with Corvus Raaf, he was certain he was ready for this duel. Since then, his reaction time had definitely benefited and his guard was always up.When [member="Dair Cotarin"] had started charging him, Haytham had taken note of the care that he had placed in the process of his stances.

Djem So to charge?

Haytham didn't buy it, it was something that he'd do. Especially the feint part. So when the other Padawan's lightsabre was moving closer to his neck, Haytham tugged on his bait, so to speak, raising his lightsabre towards his neck in it's defense, but the moment Dair tucked his body he leapt forwards to take up the position Dair had been occupying moments before.

Letting the Force strengthen his own hold on gravity, he rotated on his right leg, and was already stepping out of his 180 degrees spin and rapidly closed the distance between them. He was also a Djem So practitioner, but Haytham wondered for a moment if he'd be able to follow his swift transition of his lightsabre forms. Makashi helped with that.

Last time, his lightsabre was up at his neck area, it still was, but this time it was held with a two-handed grip, and that was when the Falling Avalanche maneuver was delivered... It had become an ability that he had employed ever since Kian Karr had showed it to him when he had taught him the basics of the form. A devastating counter-attack, but although it wasn't employed suddenly in the middle of a duel, Haytham was certain it'd have great effect.

Dair was certainly no slouch in lightsaber combat, as a padawan he'd been in more battles than he'd liked, and had learned hard lessons about such fights. This was not a true battle, this was only a duel. However, without pushing both of them to their limits, there would be no learning and no growth.

One of the most important aspect of combat in any form was kinesthetics, the ability to know what was going on around you at all times. It was one of the reasons that Dair liked to employ rolls in his Djem So. He had a naturally heightened kinesthetic sense, and that combined with his natural empathic sense allowed him to keep an accurate picture of where people were and what they were doing. Dair knew his strike had not landed, and he felt the tempo shift slightly as his sparring partner moved forward and attempted Falling Avalanche. The proficiency in Djem So did not surprise Dair, many people preferred to mix the styles when they fought. Dair liked to know the styles, but he preferred to fight with Djem So above all others. His massive size and strength, naturally inborn as a full-blooded Valkyri, lent a great deal to the form, so much so that he only rarely employed the force to strengthen his blows like most Djem So practitioners do, giving Dair a great deal more endurance with the form. No, the proficiency didn't surprise Dair, but the employment of Falling Avalanche so early in the fight was either [member="Haytham Kaze"] mistaking Dair's move as a fatally flawed one, or some disdain for Dair's style. Dair did not feel any disdain from the man, so he assumed that the man thought that Dair had made a fatal error.

That was certainly not correct.

Dair twisted as he stood from his roll, his lightsaber up above his head, parallel to his shoulders in a classic parry. Dair did employ the force to strengthen him, for the first lesson that needed to be learned was not to make such assumptions about your foes. Djem So was an aggressive style that pressed the assault when it could, but if one did not begin the assault it was often best to pace the fight until you could take the offensive. Dair's blade met the falling blade of Haytham and with the strength in his arms, chest, abdomen and legs helping with their uncoiling from the roll, multiplied by using the force to empower him with greater strength, Dair was able to arrest the Falling Avalanche, with almost no effort. He continued to uncoil and attempted to push his partners blade up and away, continuing the movement of his previous parry. He would then step forward with his left foot and turn his parry into a Fluid Riposte. Dair's shoulders twisted, intending to fling Haytham's blade, arms still attached, to the side to open up his guard more, then his arms snapped from right to left, Dair's blade aimed to land across the front of Haytham's shoulders and chest. At the training setting, Winter would not even cut through clothing, but the magnetic field would still impart the impact of the blade to Haytham and Dair was planning to push past and through Haytham, intending to push Haytham back a few steps. Dair's guard would then come back up to the Djem So starting pose, in preparation to continue the assault.
